That was my mainstay GPS for a number of years. I used the old serial cable...gave it to a family friend who bought a generic usb serial adapter (radioshack) and uses it. We borrowed that unit last Summer when we went on a multi-state National Park's trip so we could download caches along a route. It worked great - got us close enough to find caches in CA, AZ, NV. My recollection is there was an update a couple of years ago for the III+ so if you haven't loaded that update, I'd do that and get a couple of cables for $50.00 and try it out. At worst, you have a decent backup GPS when you finally go out and buy a newer model. my 2 cents.

How are you calibrating the barometer?
Team Chinook replied to Team Chinook's topic in GPS technology and devices
Ok. Sounds like it is more common to use the elevation/altitude calibration rather than the baro pressure..unless you're near an airport. Anyone have an idea on how capable the home weather system baramoters are? I have a weather station... it reads 29.68 / 1018.8 whereas weatherunderground reports downtown Walnut Creek reading 29.95 in / 1014.1 hPa and falling. whereas weatherunderground nearest airport (10mi away) reads 29.96 / 1015 - but data is an hour old... -
So what is the common form of barametor calibration? How often does it need to be done?

Darn Garn it...Colorado 400T continues to work
Team Chinook replied to Team Chinook's topic in GPS technology and devices
I regret to report another successful day of geocaching on my Colorado 400T. The thing just seems to work! -
That is what GPS devices do. Provide lat/long coordinates off of the orbiting satellites. how does gps work? Check out this article from Scientific American - Scientific American

Well, not to complain or anything, but this 400T continues to work just fine. Even after the latest upgrade to 2.7. I've nothing to complain about... Might be because I haven't (or don't know how) used all the features. Well, the thermometer I know was a mistake, as I don't think it can accurately measure temperature w/o an external probe. But my geocaches keep being found... The descriptions are good (for the most part - pictures are an issue still) The heart rate monitor works fine. The Colorado 400T didn't fall out of the handle bar mount ($9.95 REI) yesterday when I found a bunch of caches. It didn't slip out of my sweaty hands when I went jogging (with the HRT) I'm looking forward to getting the 24K CA/NV TOPOs so perhaps I can complain about something and/or the Roadmaps for navigation. Grrr....Darn you Garmin!!!!!

I was getting that sporadically prior to the upgrade.

easy topic! need a bike mount!
Team Chinook replied to rubberchickenclan's topic in GPS technology and devices
easy answer: Google.com search garmin bike mount easy answer2: www.garmin.com view product view accessories view bike mount. easy answer3: RTFM -
you can get two different topo options from Garmin and get them on CD or SD card. SD card would load locally on the Oregon, CD would load via Garmin's Mapsource application. Good source of information here: http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/ Have fun!

Anyone w/ experience with the Garmin HR Monitor
Team Chinook replied to Team Chinook's topic in GPS technology and devices
Ok. Did just shy of 5mi this morning w/ the HRT and 400T. Glad they wrapped it in rubber as I held the unit in my hands and it kept it from popping out of my swetty hands. Popped it into Fitness mode, turned on the HRT and it found it immediately. I tweaked a couple of windows on the trip monitor, cleared the tracklog and turned on the stop watch. Seemed to work well. I'm now trying to upload it to sporttracks and having some issues and I'm troubleshooting w/ them. I'll compare the track on GEarth to my Trackstick tracks for a comparison of the track data. Cheers! -
Why No Ability to View All Waypoints with Oregons?
Team Chinook replied to Didjerrydo's topic in GPS technology and devices
If I'm not mistaken when you transfer your tracks over to mapsource it also transfers your waypoints. That might be a way to grab them all and then view on a larger screen...just not in the field. But you could then edit and name it something meaningful. -
Oregon - trouble getting geocaches to display
Team Chinook replied to puddlepicker2's topic in GPS technology and devices
Puddlepicker. This was just discussed yesterday. Did you read through that posting? Also, read the oregon wiki. It covers download and transfer of caches to the Oregon. http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/ -

Check out these sites. They should cover your Nuvi questions. http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com/index.html http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=...amp;#entry52922 Should cover what you need to know w/ regard to GSAK export to Nuvi. "We have discovered there is a very strong likelihood that the version of firmware on your Garmin Nuvi - and more importantly the version number of POILoader - play an important part in making this project work successfully. For this reason, we recommend that you download POILoader from the link above, as this is a copy stored here locally on this website and so is permanently available. We know this project works with POILoader version 2.5.2 and so we strongly recommend that you use this version to upload your data to the Garmin Nuvi." Good Luck!

Anyone w/ experience with the Garmin HR Monitor
Team Chinook replied to Team Chinook's topic in GPS technology and devices
Thanks. For clarification, I'm curious if you've adjusted the profile and/or figured out the best way to utilze the Coloroado when you go for a run. Are you using the timer and/or the trip computer to gather data? Or does it matter as the information is collected on the track? As a geeky gadget guy, I've been using a GPS Tracker, clipped to my hat, to grab my tracks when I job w/ my nike ipod contraption and my Suunto T1 HRM. The nike data goes to the nike site, the Suunto data was going into an excel sheet, but now goes into Sport Tracks along w/ the track data from the Trackstick. I'm hoping to utilize the Colorado w/ HRM to replace the Trackstick and the Suunto HRM watch and load the data into Sport Tracks. I assume I need to clear and start a new track when I go for a jog - or is that handled with the Profile in the Colorado automagically or when the timer starts? Those are the types of questions/use I have...Thanks! -

Laptop interface with Garmin 60csx
Team Chinook replied to Cape Cod 5's topic in GPS technology and devices
Yes. you need to change the settings in the Garmin to whatever your pc software supports. I believe it is NMEA instead of garmin, but it's been awhile so I can't recall. I used Streets and Trips 2006 on a PC and it will allow you to route; tell you when you are coming up to a POI, etc. Not a bad interface, there are others that might be as good or better and I've not tried the latest iteration. I was doing this with a III+ and their serial connector. -

Colorado 300, found caches not on the list
Team Chinook replied to Jouko's topic in GPS technology and devices
My caches Saturday 12 finds 1 DNF. Found showed as open treasure chests. Were removed from cache list. Soft button option allowed me to toggle to found list and see list of found caches. All 13 showed up in the txt file and were uploaded via gc.com web interface, via the field notes interface. I'm running the latest rev of Colorado. BTW, in GSAK, I filter found caches and only export available unfound caches to the Colorado.
