  1. You may find this recent article from PCPro useful. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/134/gps-kits/introduction.html
  2. A good point, one worth making and checking out. I do think however that the European states have a pretty common policy when it comes to frequency allocations so I suspect they use the same channels. In fact, when I use mine in Spain, I'm constantly having to change channel to get a 'free' one, as they are used so much by the Spanish! Also, I don't think they could confiscate them if they were on different channels. It may be illegal to use them, but not to own them. Sean
  3. In the last year I have flown from Newcastle (UK) to Tenerife, Palma and Geneva and back, each time carrying a dSLR, compact digicam, GPSr (with leads), iPAQ, mobile phone and 4 PMR's in my hand backage. Not once was my bag searched by hand. I have no recent experience of travelling through London though, where I suspect your bag may be pulled to one side for a quick hand search. Bon voyage Sean
  4. Following on from the recent "Being Made Fun Of" thread, today I introduced five of my sceptical/fun-making mates to the world of geocaching. I needed a cache that would capture their imagination... We were in the Lake District last night to see Alan Hinkes at Reghed. After spending the night in Rydal Cave, we set out this morning to start the quest. Yep, what better introduction than Quest for the Ring of Power. We managed the 1st two stages, how smug did I look as I stood back and watched them 'muggles' wet their pants with excitement at the infamous 2nd Micro! They can't wait to get back and complete it. One up to me!
  5. At the Youth Hostel, just across the main road from the Clachaig Inn and the Red Squirrel campsite. I've not used it personally, so can't rate it. http://www.hotspot-hotel.com/site/hotspot_...nt=bt&id=606479 Sean
  6. Err, couldn't this be a form of stalking???
  7. To get around this, when you've got the map you'd like to save, press the 'Print Screen' (Prt Scr) key on your keyboard, open up paint (or similar), select paste, to paste from the clipboard, then use the crop tool to crop just the map, move it up to the top left of the paint window, select Image/Attributes and resize to 600x600 pixels. Then save your new map image. Sean
  8. Lord Eglinton's Tunnel It's been archived!
  9. The company that do the Majorca guide also do a Tenerife one. Not exactly sure what's on the disk, but believe the Majorca one has a map file compatible with Fugawi. http://www.fugawi.de/index-GPS-Routenplaner.html Sean
  10. I'm off to Majorca soon and plan to do some caching. I use memory map on a pocket pc here at home and wondered if anyone knows if I can get a good scale map of Majorca, preferably that will run in memory map, but not essential. Which brings me to Fugawi... A quick search through the Majorcan cache gallery pages provided this: A quick email to the cacher in question, he was using this on his iPAQ with Fugawi "Included on the CD is .fx4 file that works with Fugawi on iPAQ. I had very good use for the map, even though it was not always updated in all areas". I downloaded the Fugawi demo to mess around with, but I can't find the settings to install it on the iPAQ, is that available in the demo? Is there another program that will enable me to display the .fx4 file? Is it compatible with Memory Map, or can it be converted? Or do Fugawi not do a free map viewer so that I could view the Majorcan map I want to buy. Already having memory map, I don't really want to shell out £40 or so for Fugawi, just to display a 15 Euro map! Thanks Sean
  11. From my experience in helping friends and family, unless you feel the need to go with a 'big name' provider, don't. It would be unfair to suggest that the likes of AOL and BT offer a poor service, the previous posts seem to back that up and people have had no problems with their service. But, in general, you can get a better and faster service by going with someone not so obvious. Take a look at the comparison charts here (I hope the link works). You'll see that Plusnet, who have been mentioned previously, and Nildram (my ISP) rank higher in every category. I have seen most problems with Tiscali (their rankings seem to portray that too).
  12. Wouldn't this be better on an international forum Kev? Sean
  13. A couple of sites that may prove useful: UK Postcode Map (gives a broad idea of where UK postcode regions) Postcode/Coordinates (gives a grid reference and coordinates for most UK postcodes (the 1st part anyway) Sean
  14. Getting back to the question on everyone's lips... Does the book tell you whether you are a dummy or not? And if so...
  15. Without wanting to split hairs, you can't watch your own caches. The 'watching' is automatic and trying to watch it again won't work!
  16. A little bit too much information...
  17. The unusual locationless cache, Where's in a name is along similar lines, but being locationless, can be done almost anywhere.
  18. It was closed when I looked on Friday, but I emailed my scores to you all the same.
  19. Looks like they've been doing it for ages. But they all appear to be micro's!
  20. Sneak preview of SP's upcoming video diary You'll need Real Player to watch it. It's about 1Mb.
  21. Is it too much to ask that photo's be submitted at the correct size to start with? Our favourate software company (ducks for cover) offers Image Resizer as part of it's Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP. A really nifty utility. Right click on an image file and immediately create a resized copy.
