  1. I can only tell you that I love the Natioal Geographic topo series and use it with a Garmin 76S. I am sure this one will work in your Garmin Legend BUT the topo maps I got for my entire state came in a 10 CD pack and cost $100 bucks. The CD you discribe maybe something else but for that price you should check it out better. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  2. Boy the poor admins have a thankless job. Dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. Somebody has to lay out the rules of the game and we play within those confines. I agree that two ways of getting verifications for this cache was getting off on the wrong foot and being told the right way to do something as the rules for caches stand doesn't mean you should hacked for it. Keep up the good work admins. IMHO sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  3. WOW! a wife buying a gps for her husband. What a nice Idea. My wife would never buy me a gadget like a gps. Looks like you are getting nothing but good advice here. Hope your husband appreciates how thoughtful you are. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  4. I use the Mighty Mouse II external antenna for my 76S. The antenna was purchased online from the GPS Store www.thegpsstore.com sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  5. I would agree with montythemule wholeheartly. I have a external that I used with my old gps (garmin 12XL) but with this new 76S I haven't seen a real need to use it anymore because of the better internal antenna on the 76S. Love the larger display also. The compass works great when you are moving so slow for whatever reason (looking for a cache when close or the terrain makes it impossible to keep moving) that the gps starts to vary position too much for good accuraccy. Have a great time and welcome to geocaching. IMHO sidewinde LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  6. Thanks for sharing BunkerDave. Good to know you are still out there somewhere. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  7. And here is another fine example of why tourist shouldn't be placing caches they can't maintain. 8. Glad to see that Moun10bike wasn't one of the victims of the dreaded sidetrack virus. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  9. Thanks jpatton for the post on the 76S gps case from The GPS Store. You should get a commission from them on that post. I got mine today and love the way it looks and works. Like the way even the lanyard holds the gps in the upright position. Never could figure why the lanyard connection point on most gpsr is always on the bottom of the unit so it hangs downward and looses sat. position. Thanks again on this thread. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  10. I guess I should have added in my earlier post that my son uses my hand me down ( garmin 12XL ) to climb routes on Mt. Ranier. They ( the ranier park service ) post route headings for gps or compass navigation through the glacier crevasse fields where one mistake off the route could be your last. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  11. Got mine for hunting 6 years ago before geocaching was the fun thing it has become today. Geocaching made it useful 12 months of the year instead of 2 months. I told my wife this was a good gadget to buy and she still doesn't believe me ( I really think she hoped I would get lost in the woods hunting and never return ). sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  12. You da man ron. Maybe you would know if there is a solar power unit that puts out enough watts and volts to power a gps that normaly runs on 2AAs or a car adapter. It is a garmin 76S. I know there are solar grids that will charge these batteries but is there one that will run the gps. I don't use rechargeables so I just want to have it run on the solar power sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  13. Get another Garmin and you will be happy again. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  14. Go with the Garmin 72 as you will love the large display with as good as reception under tree cover as other gpsr. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  15. I love the National Geographic topo map program. The only thing is my state is so big that I probably never use but 4 or 5 of the ten cds that come for Montana. It almost seem like cheating the way you can download coordinates from a cache onto a N.G. topo map then print it and take out geocaching. Downloading and uploading waypoints from or to my gps is as falling off a log ( sorry Logscaler ). sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  16. Thanks jppatton. I agree it is the way to go. LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  17. Is that the one called the ultimate case made by gps outfitters ? Do you have a pic. Growley ? Thanks sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  18. Thanks for the heads up on the update. I had been checking on a regular basis for so long waiting for the 3.02 beta to become official that I had given up and hadn't checked for awhile. Did the download and everything went fine and it didn't even wipe my sattalite almanac like it did when I did the update from the 2.01 to the 3.02 beta. Thanks again sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  19. Did you download the 3.02 beta version ? sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  20. R-A-M makes a belt clip to hold the Garmin 76 series which would make the gps operational with a good view of the sky while wearing it but it is not really a case as such where the unit is totally enclosed. I looked on the RAM web site and couldn't pin it down but I do know that CABELA'S sporting catalog has them listed for the 76. They look like the way to go as all buttons are accessible and the gps can be removed without unzipping or opening anything. CABELA'S number is 1-800-237-4444 and I am sure they can help you. The order number is AD-01-5209 for the belt clip type and you need to order 005 for the one that is for the 76S I would get one myself but I have already coughed up the money for the Garmin case which is almost worthless as far as having the unit tracking while wearing it on your belt. Let me know if you get one and if works out. sidewinde LOST AND FOUND DEPT
  21. Thanks for the post on the the backlight staying on when on external power. I am new to this gpsr (76S)and I have never used it at night connected to external power and thought maybe it was a glitch since I had installed beta firmware 3.02 and couldn't find anything in the manual about this. Tried it on battery power and worked ok so I wasn't too worried about it anyway. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  22. quote:Originally posted by Anders:This is my second Vista, since they replaced it three months ago. My first unit had the flickering lines across the display problem now and then. The second one now has one pixel row horizontally over the screen gone white all the time. I think you bought from the right company, since they offered to replace this one too under warranty, in spite of the fact that the original purchase was in September 2001. So the company is good, but some of their products aren't 100% good. There certainly was no abuse involved in this second problem, since the unit was lying in a hotel room when the line suddenly was there when I turned it on. Pressing hard with a finger near the power button helps sometimes, so it's most certainly a hardware problem. Anders Hope the trip to Garmin and back to you is a short one. Thanks for sharing your problem. I had a 12XL before this one and had it about 4 years when the internal memory wouldn't hold when ever I changed batteries. Sent it into Garmin and they replaced it with a factory remanufactured without any questions. Thanks again sidewinde LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  23. At least give Off Route.com a look. The have prices that are inline with other internet sources and a real plus is a portion of the money goes to help support Geocaching.com. I just got a gps from them and have nothing but praise for the prices and service. Besides Geocaching.com recommends and supports them. sidwinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  24. Anders, What kind of problems are you having with your vista ? Same one you sent it in for last time ? Just wondering if I bought from the wrong gps company. Just curious sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
  25. Got brave and did the dirty deed ( Updated from the 2.01 to the 3.02 beta ) because I didn't see any replies that anything bad was happening or has happened. The upgrade went fine and it didn't do anything to my basemap either. Fixed a problem I was having with the shutdown when I tried to do a elevation profile on a saved route. Other than that I assume it fixed all the other problems ( the only one I noticed was the shutdown thing )since the 2.01 version. Will post if any problems arise. Thanks for your intelligent input and support. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
