So how much does your CACHE COUNT motivate you?
Team Sidewinder replied to jollybgood's topic in General geocaching topics
The total caches found doesn't make that much difference to me but the value of points for the cache does. In my area a local geocacher has found a way to give a point value to caches in Montana and parts of Idaho and Washington. It is pretty cool the way he has figured out a way to rate caches by how many people have found them over a period of time, the difficulty of terrain and difficulty finding them. For example a cache that has been out there for a year and only one person has ever found it is rated at the top for points. I now look for caches that score higher on his chart that shows all of the geocachers in our area. It adds another dimension to the game. Before I would do a lot of caches that were way too easy just to up my cache count but now I look at the points given. Wish I could tell you more about how he works this points thing but it is great. sidewinde LOST AND FOUND DEPT. -

Need extended battery life -- 15 hours+
Team Sidewinder replied to user13371's topic in GPS technology and devices
I use the lithium batteries and they last long enough to justify the extra cost for me. No real data to prove how much longer but it is enough that I can tell. I also got a solar port from Brunton to run my gps on if I need but the sun needs to be shining and it was a little spendy at $80 from REI but I never need to worry about batteries if the sun is up. Also use the Solar port to run my cell phone if it gets too low. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT. -
Whats the coolest thing you've ever found?
Team Sidewinder replied to Khlash's topic in General geocaching topics
It was a geocoin # 20 that came from moun10bike. It was one of my first finds and moun10bike allowed me to keep it rather than pass it on. Doubt there will ever be a item that I find in a cache that will take its place as it came from a geocacher that I highly respect. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT. -

We don't need no stinkin' bike mount
Team Sidewinder replied to Nurse Dave's topic in General geocaching topics
WOW ! You must have better luck than me. I have had too many things fall off my mtn. bike ( tire pump, water bottles, tools to name a few ) to take a chance on losing my gpsr or even if not losing it having it take a tumble. Also not sure how much vibration can be taken by a gpsr mounted that way. I know the RAM mounts reduce vibration to the gpsr unit through rubber mounts. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT. -
Easy GPS program worth the hassle?
Team Sidewinder replied to Oilfieldtrash's topic in GPS technology and devices
The whole thing is free so that can't be a bad thing and if you don't like it after you tried it take it off. It sure helps if you are going to download more than a couple of waypoints at a time. sidwinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT. -
which mapsource title is best for geocaching?
Team Sidewinder replied to J. Galt's topic in GPS technology and devices
I guess it all depends what part of the country you are located in. Here in Montana the TOPO works best for me because even cities are small in comparison to some places and there are lots and lots of open spaces. Terrain contours are more important to me than city blocks or street names. Just works for me. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT. -
Hope she likes geocaching because if she doesn't and says it is either going to be geocaching or me you know which one needs to go. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.

What has Geocaching done for YOU?
Team Sidewinder replied to Snoogans's topic in General geocaching topics
I like leatherman had a gpsr for years that I just used for hunting which was about 2 months out of a year. Since GC came along I am better at using my gpsr and again like leatherman I had a excuse to upgrade more expensive one. GC also has taken me to places in my state that I would never have seen before and got me in better shape for backpacking and hunting. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT. -

Ran in to a Rocky Mountain rattler on the trail to one cache last year. If it hadn't been for using my walking stick to push grass growing over the trail out of the way I might have been in for a serious snake bite. Therefore as in previous posts a walking stick can be quite handy item to have along. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.

Lost My one and only TB
Team Sidewinder replied to coast2coast2coast's topic in General geocaching topics
My condolences on your lose. I don't know what the mortality rate amoung travel bugs is but it can't be good. It is really sad when you have a tb that has accumulated a lot of miles and then dissapears. I would use the copy if it doesn't show and make another similar tb. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT. -
First tick of the season~
Team Sidewinder replied to Trailwalker2's topic in General geocaching topics
Montana ticks can carry the dreaded Rocky Mountain Spotted fever so be very careful and check yourself after a trip in the woods or bushes. Found one on me the other day so beware. The only thing lower than a snakes belly is a wood tick. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT. -

Is this Meridian Case any good? (Neoprene)
Team Sidewinder replied to CrazyPete's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have the same case for my 76S gpsr but I have a clear screen saver from strong engineering.com on the screen so even the plastic cover on the case won't hurt the screen on the gps. I know what you mean though because my cell phone screen has scratches form dirt and dust getting between the screen and the clear plastic on the cover. The screen savers are a good investment if you want to save your screen from scratches. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT. -

My personal choice came down to the TOPO from mapsource. Maybe if you live in a more populated area where streets and addresses of cities are important you might want something else. I live in Montana so cities are small and far apart. The terrain in most important for me to be looking at so I will know where I am at. Besides one other good thing with the TOPO is the land form never changes too much so your software is really never too outdated. I love the TOPO and it was well worth the money for me. I also have the national geograpic software for my area but the down side is it can't download maps into my Garmin. Hope this helps some. sidewinde LOST AND FOUND DEPT.

poket knives in caches
Team Sidewinder replied to Soggy Boots and Baggy Britches's topic in General geocaching topics
Well if that is what Jeremy wants that is going to be good enough for me and will keep that in mind if I come across caches with knives in them. sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT.
