  1. hello folks

ye olde bald headed archie here

i have read posts that ask the question why am i not able to download waypoints. i own an etrex legend and the GSAK application works fine. how ever, it may be necessary to go to the GPS tab and set up the send/recieve baud rsate as well as the serial i/o port that connects the gps. i use the mapsource points of interest quite often and the garmin tab should be checked out. the problem with my mapsource was that i didnt have it configured correctly to send/receive. you have to open that tab and goto gps, click on that tab...then click on garmin, the rest is pretty much easy.

also on the etrex itself you can set up each page displayed to best suit your needs. on each page use the mini joystick to put the cursor on the left of the pages icon. you can safely experiment with the text boxes on each page and modify them to your needs. in my case i changed the entire trip computer page from its default settings to bearing, heading, location(lat/lon),location(listed in waypoints), etc. having done that i have made the info i really need more readily accessible. on the diplay map page all 500 of the waypoints show...i went to set up map and put waypoints on 200 feet instead of auto. this alone really cleaned up my map page and decreased confusion.

    best regards

  2. hello friends and neighbors

ye olde bald heade archie here

in an earlier post i mentioned such things as the 2 man rule, and proper clothing and equipment. in this post id like to discuss what i call recovery.

recovery is defined as the practices necessary upon completion of mission.

recovery consists of the proper maintenance of all items upon completion of your mission. your mission in this case is geocaching. the items are the things you had to have to safely and securely geocache.

basically speaking checking everything you took with you to go geocaching.

clothing, shoes, boots, expendibles, first aid etc. once again, a lot of this is common sense, but for the benefit of new cachers i feel its important.

most imprtantly, during recovery, is the geocacher themselves. one should realise that concluding a great day of caching one should check themselves out for injuries, insect bites, rashes, blistering, ticks, etc.(please note: a shower WILL not remove a tick once its embedded in your skin, and generally you cant feel a leech as its attaching itself to you.) it is also not such a good idea to pull a tick out of your skin because its likely that the ticks head may still be embedded in your flesh and most certainly its highly unwise to just remove a leech by pulling it off. thus the primary reason soldiers blouse their pants legs in their boots, to keep sneaky little crawly things out of your pants.

  3. hello friends and neighbors'

ye olde balde headed archie here

okay, i have a question, how does one become a geocache approver.

is this purely a volunteering thing and what type of guidelines apply to approvers.

    next qusetion...

what is the process that leads to an individual becoming an approver, what are an approvers rights, priveleges, and responcibilties.

  4. hello friends and neighbors

it me, ye olde bald headed archie

in responce to the post concerning injuries associated with geocaching:

i am an insullin dependent diabetic that must take either 100 units per day of lantus or upto 120 units of humalog. in addition i also take 5mg glucotrol twice a day and 2.5/500 mg glucovance twice a day.

i have had 2 heart attacks and 1 triple bypass surgery. as a result im on aspirin 325 mg once a day, 40 mg zocor once a day, plavix 75 mg once a day, lasix 40 mr twice a day, 20 meq potasium twice a day and toprol xl 50 mg once a day.

the only injuries i have had were related to very large thorns, however, with the meds im on i have to be aware that i bleed profusely. as such im only concerned with those type injuries. i have noticed an increase in vascular bleeding under the skin in my lower legs, particularly around my right ankle.

i dont concern myself with injuries for the most part due to the fact that i was a radiological survey team medic/lance missile crewmember. i have extensive training in emergency first aid/field medicine/field triage. all my doctor would say is you must be particularly careful with lacerations and punctures. i guess the point im trying to make here is above all else no your individual limits!!!

  5. i like nature and walking in the woods and such. but due to the housing development explosion around this area, theres just not much left in the way of woods anymore. as a matter of fact, sometimes really early in the morning, its not uncommon to see deer meandering across the parking lot towards the ditchline. yes, a cache may get destroyed, but whats worse, a destroyed cache or a freshly killed baby deer on the side of the road next to a set of apartments where there was once a woode area.

  6. hello folks, its the olde balde headed archie again....

on 8 aug 04, myself and lost fool went to find "the ol' swimming hole" cache.

i learned several lessons about potentially hazardous locations. most of which were common sense, and the things i remembered from my days in the army were of invaluable assistance.

here is a list of things i feel should be passed on to future new cachers:

1.): TWO MAN RULE- 2 persons of equal ability and knowledge each able to observe each other for hazardous actions or conditions.

in the case of the "the ol' swimmimng hole" lostfool stayed topside at the guard rail and i made entry into the area alone.

2.) PROPER TOOLS, CLOTHING, AND EQUIPMENT- pretty much self explanatory

however, even if it is self explanatory, as a cacher it would common sense for any of us to scope out an area before entering it to determine what we need. (i.e. boots, woodland clothing, rope, radios, etc.)

in the case of the"ol' swimming hole " cache myself and lostfool took a good look at it from all sides topside before either of us did anything else. as i result, i determined that only one of us would go in at a time and that i would go into the area first. on 8/8/04 i made entry...all i can say at this point is that i dint look for the cache as much as i was checking out the area. i was wearing jungle boots and fatigues luckily enough and i had a good hiking stick. we commonicated by means of 5 mile range motorola walkie talkies.(i used the handsfree head set on my talkie..lostfool new everything i was saying the whole time including several explitive deletives too colorfull to mention <_< )

    more too come, regards

  7. hello folks,

let me redefine the term newbie.

myself and lost fool were looking for the paramount brand x cache. at the coordinates was what i thought to be a hidden cache of ammo box size. it was the size of an ammo box, maybe a little bigger, od gery in color, and hidden up under a pine tree. well now its a good thing lost fool was there with me cause he stopped me before i opened it. turns out the thing was a rat poison/rat motel/rat trap.Rats go in and no rats come out.

me and lost fool should have figured it out sooner...after i had already tuoched it and revealed the"POISON:DO NOT TOUCH!!!" phrase on top of the container. :(

    regards

    archeangelsk2002

  8. hello again,

while out with lostfool i came across what was apparently a large cache. after taking my glasses of and looking at this dark grey box attached to a piece of movable concrete, if was dtermined by lostfool that it was not in fact a cache but a very large rat poison container. ITS A GOOD THING LOST FOOL STOPPED ME BEFORE I OPENED IT HUH? :(

  9. hello everybody,

i have an etrex legend and ive done some accuracy experiments to test the unit.

i started with this hypothesis: is it possible that signal splatter or dispersion by means of either envioromental or atmospheric conditions creat coordinate images that were like the old shadows on improperly tuned black and white tv's of old.

myself and lostfool did one experiment we picked an open area and each assumed a position and coordinate and basically geocached each others position. both units turned out to be flawless in accuracy. this experiment was done at nighttime in clear sky on asphalt.

i duplicated the same experiment by myself during mid day sun on asphalt and the acciracy was noticably flawed. this same experiment was done again as a control on cut grass in the same enviroment and the accuracy was much better.

QUESTIONS: does asphalt have a dispersing or reflecting affect on satellite telemetry?(as opposed to earth which apparently does not).

how can we be notified if solar flare activity will be affecting satellite telemetry?

what are the affects of solar flares on gps and what is indicative of those affects? regards: archeangelsk2002

  10. hello everyone

for the benefit of newbies such as myself, why isnt geocaching more readily recognized as a sport or recreational activity? in some of the postings i have read certain people have an unusual disdain for geocaching. this was demonsrated to me by a muggles in the area of the "string along" cache. i was told that this gentleman would call the police on me if he saw me on that bridge again. well anyway i told the guy thanks for the insight and have a nice day and walked away.

i suppose that if i had told him i was looking for aluminum cans everything would have been fine.

  11. hellooo........

my name is chris..and im a ....bald headed....im a ...dammit im in denial!!!

first it was orieenteering and then i neede more....so now i ...i... am a cache-a-holic...if i dont get my gps fix... ugh!!! not that i gots to have it!!!!!!!

  12. hello again from the old bald headed archie

okay, ive foun several caches...how do i post this info on the website

the recent storms here in louisvill blew 1 cache away...i notified the owner by email...do i count this as unfound even thought the film container was open and underwater...no log book or anything else. this leads me to another question

if a cache location is seriously over grown are we as cachers allowed to clean it up by trimming up the site. or should we contact the owner of the cache or what

i now know why one must not wear shorts in the woods...ticks and thorns .

  13. hello form the olde bald headed archie

to everyone that replied to my first post, thank you for the information.

on one post i read, someone was looking for the least expensive map source cd-rom,unfortunately, there arent any real inexpensive map source cd-rom, i got my points of interest map source cd from www.garmin.com. it cost 59.95 plus postage. i checked around and the least expensive i found was the garmin website.

i intend to get the metro guide map source cd here in about 2 weeks.

i also learned that being extremely bald, one must definetly wear a hat. i was so wound up in what i was doing i got my head sunburned. so, for the time being im now the old bald sunburned head archie. which brings me to what i think is very important.

1.) USE A HAT AND SUNSCREEN!!!

2.)HAVE WATER AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES WHILE OUT CACHING. (I HAVE AN OLD ARMY CANTEEN WITH WEB BELT, IT CAME IN HANDY TODAY).

3.) KNOW SYMPTOMS OF ALL HEAT RELATED INJURIES AND ILLNESSES!!! AND KNOW HOW TO TREAT THEM IN A FIELD ENVIROMENT!!!!

most of the above is common sense but a small remnder is a good thing.

i learned today that even if you dont find the cache at least you are getting some good aerobic excercise, i went looking for 5 caches here locally and only found one.

i also cross paths with a large unattended german sheppard...im glad he was friendly!!!!!!

    regards to all

the old sunburned bald headed archie :D

  14. hello,

my handle if you will is archeangelsk2002, most people just call me archie or the old bald headed archie, how ever, my name is chris griffin and i live around the

breckenridge lane bardstown road area here in louisville. About 3 weeks ago while in buechel park shooting bearings for setting up an orienterring course i was approached by an unnamed older man who basically turned me on to the gps unit and its usage. 2 weeks ago i purchased the etrex legend...now im hooked!!!!. it seems that ive become addicted to the technology and such concerning gps.

as a matter of fact there are several caches within a 5 mile radius of my location.

any way i have some questions ....

1.) i have a sharp OZ-590 pda, what applications, if any, could i download onto my pc so that i would be able to download cache info to said pda?

2.) what is the recommended procedure in case any police officer notices a cacher wandering around...do we id ourselves as geocachers or what, and if so will most law enforcement be aware of geocaching as a whole?

3.) is there any such thing as "extreme geocaching" by extreme i mean with time limits, unusual locations, etc?

4.) what kinds of public areas are off limits to geocaching as a whole?

5.) are there any officially sanctioned competitive geocaching events?

in conclusion(finally, for now), best regards archeangelsk2002 :(
