  1. extreme caching is what i need i must do this it is my addiction and i must succumb to it...the most perilous cache i want to do in the louiville-indiana area is patch reef and patch reef beach. these are air raid fan's caches. air raid fan was very specific on his cache pages concerning these two areas. he included all pertinent safety info and such. i appreciate arf's details on these caches.

what makes these 2 dangerous is if you werent paying attention to your surroundings and the enviroment you could die by drowning very quickly.

to date, no one has logged these caches as being found.

but believe me....i will be the first to find on both of them...come hell or high water

  2. i use a palm lllxe with 8 Mb of memory. it is readily compatible with cachemate and gsak. if you do get a pda and go paperless a good pda cover like the gladiatorII is more than adequate to protect your pda. the gladiatorII cost me 29.95, and after being up in the hills of the jefferson memorial forrest on 12/4/04 i am sincerely glad i got that gladiator, also got a lighted stylus to keep from using the backlight so much. as it stand now i have 2413 gpx files downloaded to my palm. i have all necessary info available at any time. the palm was purchased from e-bay, the gladiator pda case was purcheased from office depot, as was the lighted stylus. i like paperless caching. having carried folders and papers and such was turning into a real big problem especially in high wind. it is no fun chasing the cache page papers up hill.

  6. i go and get dried banana chips, raisins, shelled sunflower seed, mixed nuts, and raisins. i also keep some beef jerky handy. the thing i try to have above all else is some kind of granola bars.

being diabetic, i have to stay away from dried pineapple, or any high concentrated sugar content...and unfortunately...the m&m are excluded

i really miss pine apple and m&m's but banana chips are okay.

by the way anybody have any suggestions for a good recipe for a diabetic trail mix

    ?????????

  7. any kind of band aid is good!!!! i seem to a thorn magnet, last time i got a thorn stuck in the side of my face. myself and lostfool were out and about and were glad to come across a cache with bandages in it.

when we put ours out, the ammo boxes will also have bandages and basic first aid stuff in them as well as other stuff. i really like the idea of bandages and such.

  10. hello friends and neighbors.

tis me the olde bald headed archie.

how many of you have been off in the woods, near a lake and found you ran out of water?

how many of you know what cryptosporidium and giardia parasites are?

are most of you aware that 90% of the water ways are contaminated in some form or another?

and finally, how many of you know how to purify water in an emergency?

the situation is your around 10 to 12 miles out on a long range, on foot, caching

expedition. you knew you were running low on water and now you have no water.

do you take a chance on dehydration, or do you take a chance on drinking lake water?

in the field certain situations demand an approiate action. in this case, the best action is to know how to purify water in an emergency. for reference from the epa please note this website: http://www.epa.gov/safewater/faq/emerg.html

i myself carry 2 % tinture of iodine and potable aqua tablets. for clear water 5 drops of iodine to 1 quart of water is sufficient, and for cloudy water 10 drops to a quart. it has to set for upto 1 hour. the potable water tablets are used 1 tab for 1 quart of clear water and 2 tablets for 1 quart of cloudy water. it has to sit for 30 minutes. the colder the water the less effective both of these methods are. according to the EPA boiling is the best way to kill microrganisms in water. PLEASE NOTE, THESE METHODS APPLY ONLY TO BACTERIOLOGICAL DECONTAMINATION OF WATER AND ARE INEFFECTIVE AGAINST CHEMICAL CONTAMINATION.

TO REMOVE CHEMICAL CONTAMINANTS A PORTABLE WATER FILTRATION IS RECOMMENDED...THAT STATES IT CAN FILTER TO 1 MICRON OR LESS.

a good water purification system will state that it is also effective to filter out cryptosporidium and giardia as wall. the major drawback is the cost of these portable systems. i priced them within a range of 60.00 to as much as 129.00.

  11. lotfool checked out the cobra gps, as did i, niether of us were very satisfied with them. i use a garmin etrex legend and it cost me 129.00 at dicks sporting goods.

lostfool uses a lowrance gps and has a garmin gps 72 as a back up. we are both highly satisfied with our gps units. however, the cobra gps, it not one either of us

    would have or use.

  12. for convenience purposes i would like to be able to upload a thousand waypoints, but i dont know if its possible. my etrex legend says it can upload 500. i keep 500 on it in case im out and about and just happen upon a quickie. if i understood the post correctly the updates on the garmin site would let me upload 1000 waypoints.

    question:

what upgrade version is it and is the upgrade specifically for the etrx legend????

  13. i have the points of interest mapsource cd. it cost 79.95 total with postage and handling. on my etrex legend i can tell you the address of a mcdonalds restruant in san diego california as well as the phone number. this works on both my pc and my etrex, the thing is i live in louisville kentucky. and the etrex can map canada, central, and south america. and i have only used 11 percent of my etrex legend's memory. the garmin mapsource points of interest is in my opinion a very good investment. easy to install and easy to use.

  14. thanks for all the responces concerning the hard case for palm pilot. i ended up paying 29.95 for the gladiatorII palm hard case. its made of steel and is water proof. the inside of it is padded with velcro and plastic clips to hold the palm. it is a little bulky. but since im the type person who has trouble walking and chewing gum (especially in hilly terrain) i thought it best to pay that much for a hard case.

as for now im satisfied with it. the hard case can also double as a desk stand as well.

  15. try out cachemate. i dint have any trouble installing it on my palm. i have the paid for version. and i am very happy with it. downloading the gpx files from the cache pages to gsak by clyde would also be good since it can generate .pdb files which can be downloaded into a palm unit with a great deal of ease. i say this again....

way to go clyde, best 15.00 i ever spent!!!!!!!

  16. i just got my palm lllxe 2 weeks ago, i have 2312 .gpx downloaded to it. paperless is ,in my opinion , the most efficient way to manage cache pages. lost fool got his handspring 2 days ago. i used my infra red port to download to his hand spring all the gpx files i had on my palm. what amazed me me was the compatibility and the time. it took just under 5 minutes for me to "beam" my info to his hand spring deluxe. cachemate auto installed on his unit in less than 10 seconds.

paperless is the way to go!!!!!

  17. my personal best so far was 6 caches in a period of 3 hours. the caches were all in the area of the falls of the ohio interpretive center. myself and lost fool logged in just under 10 miles of walking. we are trying speed caching, not the number of caches by itself, but in a limited amount of time the max number of caches possible. all caches found on foot within, for example 2 hours or 5 miles. it great for cardiovascular, and above all else no running. however...we are planning a 2 mile run within a cache dense area to see how many we can find at a good jogging pace or a good airborne shuffle.

  18. the most challenging for me to date is the patch reef by air raid fan. its right on the ohio river by the locks. myself and lost fool were going to attempt to do it on nov 20th. if you read the cache page and take a look at some of mine and arfs pics youll understand why i feel this is the most challenging cache i have tried.

there are two caches , they are the patch reef(GCKD8Z) and patch reef beach

    (GCKDET).

  19. i highly recommend the use of a good metal hiking pole. on at least 4 occassions mine has prevented me from getting a broken ankle and falling down a very steep hill. the one i have was purchased on ebay. it came from japan and is expandible and retractable. it is made of steel. hiking poles are also good probes for testing the density and depth of holes, crevices, and bogs.

  20. hello friends and neighbors

tis me the olde baldheaded archie,

    a quick question:

where can i get a reasonably priced hard case for my palm lllxe. someone had a post concerning belkin and a case costing 8 dollars. the ones i have looked at go for 17 to 39 dollars, i am specifically looking for a case that fits the palm, is water tight, and shock absorbant.

any suggestions on this would be appreciated.

    regards
