  1. My wife sort of just tolerated geocaching - until I started letting her hold the GPS. SHE actually suggested we go caching the other day!
  2. Arrow of Light 1972 Eagle Scout 1979 National Camp School 1983 Woodbadge 1986 Philmont trek 1993 total years in Scouting 27
  3. I typically geocache without a GPS. I keep my maps oriented, with north on the map turned to north on the earth. I guess it comes from years of orienteering. When I do use a GPS, I'm usually already pretty close to the cache, so I just follow the arrow or use the GPS to get a bearing for my compass.
  4. I set up this multi-cache in the Fort Worth Zoo, with the final cache container outside the zoo gates.
  5. If I don't like a cache, I usually just post a short log telling what I traded. If I have a serious problem with a cache, such as being dangerous, I email the owner.

  7. Please, Jeremy, consider changing the format for the subject line. I pay a LOT more attention to logs on my own caches than those on my watch list, and right now there's no way to create a filter for the subject line in my email program to differentiate between the two.
  8. Gallant started caching after reading an article in Boys' Life. Goofus started caching after reading an article in Playboy.
  9. Don't any of you people read the guidelines: NO FOOD IN CACHES!

  11. Whomever coined the term "dyslexic" obviously wasn't.
  12. To paraphrase Forrest Gump: quote:Life is like a geocache. You never know what you're gonna get. and to quote Paul McCartney and Badfinger: quote:If you want it here it is come and get itBut you better hurry cause it's goin fast...
  13. There is now a Yahoo! discussion forum to discuss ways of promoting geocaching to orienteers and vice-versa. The group is heavy on the orienteering side right now, and could use more input from geocachers, especially any with an orienteering background. I actually discovered geocaching through orienteering. The goals of the two sports are very similar, especially when dealing with land managers. Many of the skills are similar. Both sports basically involve hunting for something in the woods. Cooperation with the orienteering community could greatly benefit both groups. If you are interested, please join this group in order to help out both sports. Thanks!

  15. I agree that there is inconsistency in the approval process. Caches are approved by people, and people are inconsistent. It's part of our nature. Like many others, I'd like to see virtuals and locationless caches brought back, not as they were, but as a different game. As much as I like virtuals, they're not really caches. I'd like to see the currently listed virtuals and locationless caches extracted from the current database and used to seed two new databases. There would still need to be guidelines for the new games, but they could be relaxed a bit due to the fact that they would not be considered the same game any longer. Geocaching purists would get what they want - true "caches," and find counts that reflect only true "caches." Virtual and locationless fans would get what they want also. Groundspeak would be able to attract and keep more users, rather than driving them off to N@vic@che or other sites. Everyone would win. Just my 2 cents.
  16. Next thing you know, they'll be putting out virtual benchmarks...or worse yet, locationless ones.
  17. How come that damned Goofus always hunts MY CACHES?
  18. Gallant logs "not found" when he spots the cache, but doesn't sign the logbook in order to not compromise the location of the cache. Goofus logs fake finds for virtual caches using answers found with Google searches and locationless caches using doctored photos from the Internet.
  19. Gallant rehides the cache exactly as he found it. Goofus moves the cache 50 feet and throws it in the weeds to make it "more interesting for the next guy."
  20. But only if it's the original can of beans from the original geocache. TPBM geocaches in a tutu.
  21. smiley1 now has 2 fewer finds than he had a little while ago. His logs are gone off of two of mine.
  22. Something I've wondered for a long time -- What kind of beans are (were?) they?
  23. I like the idea of an "official" stats page on Geocaching.com. It would eliminate the need for other sites scraping the data and doing it themselves. Is geocaching competitive? For some, no. For others, yes. There should be options for both groups. It's not like you win a medal or anything. I like the idea of listing all cachers on a stats page, with opt-out cachers listed as <anonymous>. Stats are just stats. They do not make the game a competition. Those of us that are competitive will be that way whether we have stats or not. Those that are not competitive won't care if there are stats or not. In order to conserve server workload, static stats files could be generated daily at off-peak times. The stats wouldn't be real-time, but close enough.
