TA. And you were there to witness it too ! Thanks man. In future, we trust YOUR GPSr...
  2. Nobody is blaming QFC Wolkyno. They are doin this as a labour of love. Nobody is pointing fingers at them. The fingers are being pointed at people who cache in Tennesee, Antartica and Germany on the same day, logging virtual caches as if they were there, thereby influincing their ranking in South Africa. As for rules in all kinds of sport...well, in rugby if I walk up to the scrum-half and punch him in the face, I am breaking the rules, right ? Well, I feel it was justified so I can continue playing, right? WRONG. I get sent off. AS for Virtuals, Groundspeak also have little rules. I quote : 'Because of the nature of these geocaches, you must actually visit the location and acquire the coordinates there before you can post.' Yes. I do admit that some caches are really 'armchair' ones, where the owner allows it (and I admit, I have one of these in my logs), but some have gone a bit far. Some cache owners expect you to actually go there, but the owner can be tricked into thinking that you were there, when you clearly were not. It's like our taxi-drivers that believe it is only illegal if you get caught. Still, QFC's site is a great effort, and as I said before, has sparked interest in the sport again, but has also led to 'dubious' practices to get to the top spot. Take Michael Schumacher's little prank on Saturday in the Monte Carlo GP. He is good enough as a racer not to HAVE to resort to cheating to win, yet for some reason he did. And got punished for it. But in the race he proved that he is worthy of the titles he has 7 of. All he did was irk the other competitors. This thread is there to draw attention to something that irks a lot of us. So the THREAD is not what spreads the animosity. It is the ACTIONS of fellow cachers that spreads that. Nuff said.
  3. Grumble, grumble, grumble. Off-line we have been talking about this quite a bit, and I must say, I admire GR for starting this thread. Certainly a brave puppy to cry foul. A while back GR and I were engaged in a friendly battle about the, then, Locationless caches. We talked about it a lot, saying that it was actually a stupid idea, but it got the numbers up. Somehow in there a few anomalies crept in, where people were logging the same location twice. In a friendly way I let some of them know. Some cachers went 'oh sorry, did not see it' and deleted their log. Others went 'Ah the owner did not pick it up, so my log stays.' Again, that's how we play the game. So each to his own. On the virtuals, the thought has crossed my mind many times to try and find the answers some other way, but somehow, the one I did do, just did not feel right. Even though the owner said that you did not need to visit the location, somehow it just did not feel right. It's like when you play golf and your ball lands somewhere behind a bush. You walk there, no-one around. How easy is it to just move the ball to a better spot. For some, this is easy and they can live with themselves. Me....I dunno. Be that as it may, the Rankings brought about by QFC has certainly breathed new life into the caching in SA, and the guys really need a pat on the back for that. But for some it has turned into an all out assault on the top spot, finding all sorts of devious ways of clocking up the numbers. (like moving the ball just a bit to get a better shot) And if you look at the logs of some of these caches, it really is a shame. Just a bit different, because unlike the golf ball, you logs are out in the open for everyone to scrutinize BUT. I still cache because I enjoy it. And thanks to the QFC initiative there are a lot more caches to do. So I will keep on doing it my way, ang grumble with my friends who also play the game I do.
  4. Well GlobalRat took his littleone caching aged 18 days, so at least there's a record you can try and break !!
  5. For sure. Just that a friend of mine does Gliding, and the man sometimes describes his CSx with langage that I cannot repeat on this forum. BUT, sure every unit has it's hassles. He just seems to be very good at finding them ALL in one flight !!
  6. Don't type 'Problems 60CSx' into Google. You might just reconsider. Most of the problems reported with this unit related to Elevation for Aviators. So if you do not intend flying with it, you should be cool....
  7. I had this problem on my eTrex Legend, and the 'good-whack-in-the-palm-of-your-hand' treatment was the order of the day. The problem I had was that the thumping had become more and more aggressive. I handend it in where I bought it, and Garmin or rather Avnic, fixed it for free. The unit was out of guarantee at the time. Later the problem reappeared. Then I took it to Kevin Bolton, and we did an upgrade to a Legend C, where I had to pay in the difference between a new Legend and the Legend C. So, point is : Speak to Garmin, they not like some other places that just ignore you. They really want to help. Hope you have happiness.

Looks like the caching community is really active ! Not long now to 1000... And one of the most fanatical cachers I have met, GlobalRat, has snuck back into the country, and notched up number 300. And being a true patriot, chose to do a South African cache too !! Well done !!
  9. Then they will leave the cache and steal the camera
  10. It's very simple. The owner needs to go Geocaching adoption page and give it up for adoption there.
  11. I'm with QFC on the 'tempted-to-log' point. So many times you just cannot find the cache, but you have come so close and the temptation is to just log it. I think this point has been discussed a lot , and ultimately, it is down to your own conscience. I can be a policeman and point out to a fellow cacher that he has logged a cache incorrectly, but if the cacher wants the find to stay, then what ? I have logged a raided cache as a find, but I tried to re-instate it as best I could, and I felt it was OK. Others might not. Two cachers have logged a cache near Piet Retief as a find with no container. (I use this as an example of a cache I did not even bother to log but was tempted to log it as the cachers before me logged it as finds) Many cachers have logged multiple finds on the Locationless caches in clear violation of the rules, but if you are going to fret about that then you will forever be mailing cachers and trying to rectify a situation that is not going to change. I cache because I enjoy it. I cache because it brings me places. And as far as other cachers go, let them cache their way.

So FINALLY, the logs started trickling in from Team QFC. Hitting three digits...WELL DONE BOYS !! I'ts about time you got yourself moving up the rankings .... Good one.
  13. I feel a whole lot better now........
  14. There are now three race bugs at the Botshabelo series of caches, one of which is in the Pitstop cache. So if you ever wanted to head out that way, now you have an excuse to get out and go and rotate the bugs a bit. I also left a permanent marker in the cache for marking the TB's tickets as they pass thru, so maybe other pitstop owners can do the same. Go gettim boys !! oops. Seems none of them are there no more.... a whirlwind trip thru there by seeker two and frantre....alll gone...mmm
  15. Smuts House is in Centurion. From here you can just show nearby caches.
  16. Hey Helga, what do you think of the fact that QFC refers to you as a pensioner !!
  17. ....well speaking to my rodent friend, we will just watch the traffic pass.....

  21. Hi there and welcome. I'm sure you will find the Geocaching crowd quite a helpful bunch of peeps. MMMM, I also stay in your neck of the woods, and work in Woodmead....Maybe we should plant some caches on the Ben Schoeman...
  22. Had a look a Smuts again. 99 unique logged Finds. Cache has been active now for 4 years and 4 days... 13 of them I have personally met 8 cachers have found ONLY this cache. 4 cachers have logged the find more than once... (naughty) 1 cacher I met as direct result of THIS cache... 33 travelbugs have passed through here. Good fun.

  25. My cache Smuts House, Irene has been visited by more than 90 cachers. Some have logged multiple finds, so it is a bit difficult to count, but a quick scan brings me to 94 unique cachers.
