  1. It took me 15 hours to write the decryption software, and another 10 for it to run all possible permutations, but I finally got it. I've reported your obscene personal attack to the admins! Actually I ran my email Outlook Express on it and it corrected the spelling on about 90% of the words.

  3. Has anyone used the "science" of what's indicated below to double encrypt so that those who can read the normal encrypted hint without converting them manually have more difficulty using some version of this? 4. Hey that's mine! Thanks for the plug.
  5. I use Mapopolis with my iPaq for on-road auto navigation and in the woods with its compass screen. I believe they have a 9 day try it for free deal. I believe they have Canada road maps. check their web site. mapopolis.com
  6. Lyme desease doesn't get better on its own. After the initial rash, (wich sometimes doesn't occur even though you may have it) it goes into hibernation and comes out later. Worse. You'd do yourself a favor by going to a doctor. Only antibiotics will kill Lyme and other tick borne deseases.
  7. I've got two caches in Chester. You visit a number of pretty covered bridges to get clues to the coordinates of where the cache containers are located. You get to visit some pretty rustic areas and most people who have done them have found them reallly interesting. Different then the usual. Covered Bridge Tour of Chester County - SOUTH Covered Bridge Tour of Chester County - NORTH
  8. I use Buzz Off - shirt, pants, socks and hat. Buzz Off impregnates their clothes with permethrin. So far after 15 or so wears I haven't seen any ticks on me. Lyme desease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever etc are serious stuff. I've had antibiotics, my dog has has both deseases and got so sick last year with something he almost died. He was on two antibiotics for 4 months. Use preventive measures such as Permethrin, Deet, keep your shirt tucked in your pants (I wear my socks over my pants) and check yourself frequently. Antibiotics are great when used early. Ticks frankly ruin caching and being in the woods. Nothing like winter caching when it's 20 degrees and snow on the ground!
  9. DCNR wants to expand the use of their parks. MOC's reduce the number of visitors. Simple.
  10. I changed the date in Mapsource in my computer not in the GPS.
  11. PS good points. Since you brought it up, why not explain it so people can understand the advantages. I also find that having the magnetic compass bult it frees up one hand to hold a walking stick or a tree.
  12. My Covered Bridge Tours in PA, NY, CT and VT involving driving and hiking. Some tours have containers at the end. Other tours are strictly virtuals to drive from one to the other for those rainy/snowy days you'd rather not be hiking.
  13. I would do more multi's if the total distance and number of stages were published. I just don't like starting a multi where I dont' know if I have to go to 5 caches over 3 miles (something I won't do) or a half-mile hike with two or three stages. For that reason especially I'd never do multi's on vacation.
  14. A question about protocol. If you place a multi, can someone else place a cache within .1 miles of one of the stages? The second hider would not know necessarily that his cache is nearby one of the first multi stages. If the answer is no, then that would be an argument for power cachers of individual cachers rather than just one multi since individual cache locations are all posted.
  15. I thought this topic would be a neat alternative to the Unusual Animal Encounter thread. OK-I'll start it off. Here's, well, it's pretty obvious. Cache Log

    PDA?

How do you conect to geocaching with the PPC? Do you have to have a separate connection service or is there a way to connect through Verizon? Need WiFi?
  17. I have Mapopolis loaded in my PDA actually a Pocket PC. I then overlay all the cache point using gpxtomaplet. This way while I drive aropund I see all the cache icon. I can tap on the icon to get info about the cache. Or a can set it to automaticlly navigate to the street nearest the cache. Of course I can see where the caches are - in a park, or urban street, or whatever from the map.
  18. While NG Topo's quad maps cannot be transferred to your GPS, they can be transferred to a Pocket PC for real-time navigation, routing, track elevation profiles and just plain viewing the topo features in 24K.
  19. Having an on-board compass built into a GPS provides a bearing arrow even when you are standing still. I find this a great advantage as otherwise you have to move or use a separate handheld compass for direction tie-ing up your second hand. It's also easier to do or create offset caches where compass direction is a requirement. Projecting waypoints is also naturally done with on-board compasses. As far as reliability, I have had my Vista GPS for 6 years and the compass still works.
  20. Although you can't transfer its maps to the GPS unit, National Geographic Topo gives you 24K quad maps that will transfer waypoints, routes etc, both ways from and to your GPS. It also produces great printouts with 1000 meter lines, tick marks, elevations plots, etc. Their maps can also be transferred to a Pocket PC for real time view of location on their 24K maps, create waypoint and routes while in the field.
  21. I have a Vista standalone and then bought a Pocket PC. At first I bought a cable to connect the to so the PPC would get the signals from the Vista. But the cable is a pain. So I now have a Globalsat BC337 (site) IT cost $80 and slip into the PPC's CF memory slot. You can get similar receivers that now slip into the SD memory slot. This way I use the PPC for autorouting and lots of other things and still have the separate standalone Vista.
  22. One way around this restriction is to create a multiple, offset type cache where the container is hid just outside the park. Here's cache I did in Catskills Park NY where hiding containers was also taboo. The stages before, all virtuals, were all in the park. You get to tour and hike and see the beauty of the park without violating any rules.
  23. Actually my PPC has taken some hits. I once tripped while climing over a log and smashed down on the display panel with my palm - no harm. I've dropped it in the woods a couple of times. Again - no problem. Funny thing is the worse "hit" came on an urban cache. I was walking in Manhattan's Central Park on a night cache hunt . It slipped from my hands and smashed on the asphalt. The battery cover popped off and it must of had a hard reset making it useless. I used my Vista for the rest of the hunt. Fortunately, I was able to reload the programs when I got home without any long term effect. I wasn't usng my plastic waterproof holder with the lanyard out of laziness and complacency. That would have avoided the problem.
