  1. If you're hunting or caching Columbia County, I've hid 4 ammo boxes in SGL's 55, 58 and 226. The caches combine road tours visiting covered bridges in the county to get clues of the final cache coordinates in the SGL's where the ammo boxes are hidden. GCP53H GCP55G GCP493 GCP4TM I've highlighted the requirement for "orange". Funny thing is my daughter and I hid the caches on the last day of turkey season. We had on orange hats only. Fortunately, we didn't even hear any shots although we did see a bunch or turkeys including one hopping around on one foot! He should have been wearing an orange hat too!
  2. I'm not aware of anyway to run Mapsource on a PPC. However, there are a number of street map and topo map program that will allow you to ovberlay the cache icon waypoint on their PPC mapping system.
  3. This came from the license agreement when you install Topo-mine is 5 years old so your license might be different. Interesting that it doesn't limit the number of GPS's you can load maps into but does limit the number of computers that you can load the Topo software. I thought they also allow you to copy on a laptop, as well as a desktop, but the license does not seem to allow that. (Hmmm. I've sent an email to Garmin to verify. 4. The State series comes with 3D too but you have to buy them on a state by state basis which is pricey. The northeast set includes about 8 states in the set for the price of one state. Also, the state series allows you to transfer waypoitn tracks and routes. Not sure about the other one.
  5. That's where using the track log and routing back to the beginning would help.
  6. I use gpxsonar. I takes about 30 seconds to open a file but my files are about 12M (about 650 caches each). I actually create 5 gpxsonar files of about 3,600 caches (around 125 radius from my home) but the gpx files are too big to handle by gpxsonar ( or my PPC's memory) if I only create one file. If your files are too big you might want to create a number of them. Mine are set up using GSAK so that i have 5 files: 0-30 miles from my home, 30-40 miles, 40-50, 50-65 and over 65 miles. Maybe something like that would help. I then coordinate with my auto-routing program Mapopolis. When I click on the cache icon on the map page, the miles from home (ie. 34.7) display along with other data so I kknow imediately which gpxsonar file I need.
  7. My mini-poodle Buddy doesn't find caches but knows the way back to car better than I do.
  8. I prefer caches with hints. Spending 30 minutes tromping around the bushes not only damages the bushes (and frustrates me) but exposes you more ticks. I'll often skip even looking for a cache if there's no hint.
  9. Winter's great-no ticks!! (under 40 degreess) (or mosquitoes, poison ivy, snakes, etc). Cooler to hike and better reception. Snow can make it hard to find the cache however. Enjoy it. Different perspective.
  10. I use GSAK on my desktop to create the gpx files and gpxsonar in my ipaq 2215. I then copy the gpx files into my PPC's memory card. I've had to breakup the quantity of caches in each gpx files as it acts wierd when I get much over 10M-12M files. That could be an issue with my PPC's memory size.
  11. Mapopolis for street. It autonavigates with voice and visual prompts when you connect a GPS to it. In the woods, National Geographic Topo (State Series) with Pocket Topo option gives 24k scale USGS topo maps. If your GPS is hooked up, it will show your location in the woods in real-time.
  12. My bigest fear is that I'll worry my family if I wind up getting lost for any long period of time, especially overnight. To just sit back and go to sleep overnight just doesn't seem the right thing to do.. Plus, how embarrassing! So I try my damdest to get out of there. Fortunately my hikes usually have some road somewheres nearby so it's more a moment of panic.
  13. Rather than walking back, I turn around and project a waypoint to the estimated distance to the trail head or car.
  14. Your problem is exactly why I never change hardware or software before going on a trip. Murphy's law or something like that!
  15. I use Mapopolis for voice and visual prompted road navigation as well as in the woods navigation. In the woods, the GPS page shows the current coordinates, distance to cache, compass rose, bearing arrow, altitude, etc. It runs $80-100. you can try it for free for 9 days. mapopolis.com Add gpxtomaplet (free) and you can overlay all the cache icons over the Mapopolis street maps so you can see the caches as you drive arround and then autonavigate from cache to cache and get immedate info like cache name, miles from home, cache type, D/T, container type, etc just by tapping the icon on the Mapopolis map. I also use GPXSONAR in the PPC for paperless caching.
  16. GSAK allows you to select caches along a line of selected coorindates. Maybe that would work for you.
  17. You can't see both at the same time in your GPSr in the same area. The GPS only allows one at a time to avoid multiple lines for the same streets because no two maps are exactly alike. However, you can see a topo and lets say a street map at the same time on contiguous areas but not in the same area
  18. What do you mean "...caching...and other things?..."
  19. You mentioned you have a handheld (gpsr or PDA). Which one? Doesn't the mfr of the handheld, if GPSr, have a navigation program you cn also use on your laptop?
  20. Personally I hate mapopolis it is imposible to load the bazillion maps you want into it so you never have to plan before you start a jouney and when seaching for a local point it will search all maps loaded first making it soooo slow. and besides 100 bucks for a years worth of map is insane nowi can only use it for the states i was travelling in at the time since i did not have the forsight to dowload the entire united states before my year was up. on the bright side it does support gpx files and will read them as map items and can warn you when your close to one, so it is good for caching I bought Mapopolis's disk so I wouldn't have to download their maps. A trick you can use to find the right map where your final destination is to load the state major highways map. Then you find the Place (town) you are going to and only load the county maps for the end and beginning of your trip. The major road maps for the state will route you in-between. How do you set up Mapopolis to alert you when you are close to the cache? I didn''t know it did that.
  21. Why not use a Pocket PC with GPS attached. Then you have aviation programs avaiable like this
  22. You can also overlay all the cache waypoint onto the Mapopolis maps using GPXTOMAPLET a free program. That way you can tap the icon to see various info about the cache including D/T miles from home, name, cache type, container type, etc. Tap it again and you can auto route to it. Very neat. Don't know if Tom Tom does this. Alan
  23. But the OP says and I agree that any caching you do in the cemetery where their family is buried is disrespectful to them. It's not up to you to decide what's disrespectful any more than it's OK for a trespasser to decide it's OK to cache on posted property. Private property is private property.
  24. I use Mapopolis in my PPC Ipaq 2215. It has all the street and autonavigates. I also use National geographic Topo (for Pocket PC) but you have to remember to load the topo map of the area before you leave home. (or take a laptop with you in the car).
  25. Would a GPS in the hands of a hijacker who has taken over the cockpit be of value to help him crash the plane into a pre-selected building that he has the coordinates set, especially if he is not familiar with the GPS or navigation system operating within the plane?
