  1. I came upon this mini-LED flashlight and thought it would be perfect for a trade item. Cost me less than $1. If I buy more I can get them for 65-cents each! Just thought I'd share...

I'm more excited about the idea of having a URL as described above that logs me into the geocaching site. So, use that link to log onto the forums and then click on the geologo and you're there! Still beats typing.

  4. Trade item #1? Actually, it looks like it was never traded.

  6. Sort of a 'pat on the back' from TPTB. Nice idea.
  7. For reference, my favorite software for producing 360s is Live Picture's Photo Vista. It may also be the cheapest (except for freeware). You can usually find it in the discount rack for under $10. You can use any camera. Be sure to get version 1 (not version 2). It provides images without the distortion usually seen in 360s. Tell it which images to use and press one button. Couldn't be easier. Another is Pixaround. You can view them on a PDA and email them to friends. Unfortunately the price for it has skyrocketed. I got it early, when it was cheap. Many realtors use Ipix, but the 360-world frowns on Ipix since they charge for each image produced.
  8. Ah, 360's! One of my favorite things to create. I think I have every piece of software available (except ipix) to do it. I also have a 360 lens. I'd love to see more of them here.
  9. Charlatan? n: A person who makes elaborate, fraudulent, and often voluble claims to skill or knowledge; a quack or fraud. [This message was edited by geospotter on September 08, 2003 at 08:20 AM.]
  10. I love codes. I'm working on a multi similar to your idea. There are four caches. The first three can be visited in any sequence. One contains info about how to use the code, one contains the necessary codeword, and one contains the coded message. Once you have all three you can easily figure out where the final cache is. Don't know if this helps, but simplifying the code could eliminate the need for a computer.

  13. A couple bits of information... If the public has used that trail for years then it can be considered a right of way if actions are not taken to prevent it. To prevent this from happening, all the RR has to do is close that track once a year to prevent access -- which they do, for maintenance. They therefore kill two birds with one stone. One street in NYC is owned by one of the rich families (Rockefellers ??). Once each year they close the street to maintain their ownership. On a recent cache hunt my wife and I were hiking a trail that paralleled active railroad tracks (about 60 yards away). One train was coming up the mountain and we heard it from several miles away. It took quite a while to reach us. A few minutes later an Amtrak train came DOWN the mountain from the other direction. We never heard it coming! It rounded a bend and if we had been on the tracks we would have had only a few seconds (no exaggeration) to get out of the way. Bottom line, it's illegal, dangerous, and unnecessary to place a cache near the tracks. Too many people die each year being stupid. In fact a lot more people die on tracks than in caves. Actually, more people die each year having their tonsils removed than die in caves, but that's another discussion altogether.
  14. DW, All excellent advice. Thank you. Now is there someone who can do the same for other environments, like Arctic?
  15. Why not go for a Meridian. It has WAAS, mapping, expandable memory, and can be had for under $100. Seems like a no-brainer.
  16. If you decide to use the floating container let me know. I'll send you one of these.
  17. Yeah, I'd do it again. But I have a couple of suggestions. First, work with real geocachers to properly place caches. Second, place one cache a month. This would keep people coming back to Magellan's website all year.
  18. quote:Originally posted by Cruzin!: Sooo... all the pictures of celebrities taken in public places and published in "newspapers" like the Enquirer, Sun, etc. are crossing a legal line? News organizations play under a different set of rules; as do 'public' figures. Celebrities can, and do, sue over the publication of photos.
  19. My guess is that you may be able to TAKE the pictures legally, but PUBLISHING those photos without permission could be a no-no.
  20. This may be old and you may have already heard it, but during the job interview be sure to ask "What sort of challenges will I be facing?" Employers seem to love the question. I've used it, several friends have used it, and ALL got the job. Give it a shot.
  21. Got mine at Radio Shack for $4.99.
  22. The old-timers around here will recognize the cachers' names. They've been around a long time. They're probably the reason the reporter got things right. If they say it's a bed of P.I., I believe them.
  23. I don't know that this is the problem, but I hope I can help. This is similar to a problem we see with digital cameras a lot. Your reader modified the format of your card. Your GPS is looking for one format and your reader/OS produced another. If you like, you can forward the card to me and I will re-initialize it. You might also check to see if the Meridian has a format command in one of the menues. Good luck!
