  1. First off I must say that GSAK is one of less than five programs that I have ever felt my money was well spent and worth every penny for an extremely functional program. Now on to the stupid questions. 1st: I generate local URL's for my laptop and PDA. When I pull up a specific cache page I don't see the cache owner listed. Am I missing something or is this specifically missing? I am familiar with the "Placed By" on the master index but I normally search by distace, bearing and nearest caches. 2nd: I export a Microsoft streets and trips CSV file. Most of the links get generated correctly but there are a few that fail to put the specific cache page number in the link. This of course fails to link to the page info. Never mind on question 2, my HTML pages were not updated. Problem 2 solved. GSAK, like the Batmobile after its been thru Overhaulin' and Monster Garage.
  2. actually Magellan does have a trade-in/trade-up program. I don't know how good it is but you might check into it. It might save you some money. Magellan trade-up
  3. I posted a message and link in our geocacheok Yahoo group
  4. Mine is actually 20-25 years old. I was waiting with mom in the checkout lane of the grocery store. Of course there are always books and magazines to entice people to buy after they have started reading while in line. I picked up a baby names/ what your name means book and started looking up names, including my own. Spear and Fox were the meaning/translation of my first and middle name from that book. I have been labeled with many nicknames over the years but when I started getting into computers I remembered this name. It seemed like a good one to use for logins. I have not had the difficulty of "this name is used, please pick another" routine. One of the names does not have a correct meaning when I look it up on the internet, so I guess the book was wrong.
  5. Well it helps me. Thanks Jamie Z, I'll have to try this sometime
  6. I use GSAK to export HTML cache pages to my PDA. The pages are not exactly the same, but it's close enough for me. The one problem is that a picture will not be on the GSAK generated pages, and sometimes that is needed to solve a puzzle cache. I have gotten around this by saving the picture to the PDA, it helps to rename the pic with the waypoint code so you know what pic goes to what cache. I have also saved the entire page that generates the extra folder, just like you. Good luck.

    Who Is?

When a person fills out the page for a new cache they can any name they want for the profile but it still links to thier profile. We have a local cacher, Darkmoon, that sometimes puts Insidious Design Works. It's not a big thing, just a little fun.

  9. If there is not room, such as a micro, just leave a small piece of paper. That's what I have done in some cases and it leaves something for other less prepared cachers to sign. Of course make note of this in the log. You might put these caches on your watchlist in case they are abandoned. There are some caches like this around here which I hope I can help. Some need a log book and others need a new container. The reason I see for helping the ones in my area is that they are hit frequently by newbies and out-of-towners. Bad caches could leed to bad reputations.for our area.
  10. I have a Magellan Sportrak and the wife has Sportrak Pro. We hardly ever have a problem getting WAAS here in OKC. Getting the WAAS and accuracy will be harder when in the trees and hills which you are more likely to run across in the the Tri-state area. That will probably hold true for any GPS. I'm not sure where you are located but you might want to go to one of the monthly meetings in the area. I've met with some of the people that are regulars at these meetings and I'm sure they will give you some great advice on lots of different subjects. Here is the Tri-state geocachers monthly meeting GCK00X and the Tulsa Area Geocachers (TAG) monthly meeting GC399F. The Wife and I will be attending TAG's January meeting, maybe we will see you there.
  11. Lots of people think that it would be easy to direct the police to geocaching.com to resolve the problem. Think from this point of view however far fetched. Here is a suspicious person wanting you to verify what they are doing in the area. This potential hostile is asking someone to check a certain area of the internet. Some law enforcment officers will think this a ploy. If they go to a website they have no knowlege of it might trigger other members of this "terrorist cell" to take alternate actions. I know this sounds like something from a Tom Clancy novel but it did occur to me that is why nobody would check into it right away.
  12. Two solutions for prevention and I use both frequently. PDA screen protectors. Find one that is close to the size you need then cut to fit with a razor. I use screen protectors on my PDA all the time. The other solution is clear packing tape. Use oversize tape on the area needed and of course cut to fit with razor. I use the tape on our watch faces, GPSr's, mobile phones, digital camera preview screen and other things. I do this even if I have a case with a clear vinyl protection screen because I had a case like this for a mobile phone a few years back. The vinyl started scratching the face. When the tape looks a little worn or scratched, peel and stick some more. If it is put on good, with no bubbles and trimmed with a razor right at the edge, nobody can tell it's there. As far as scratch remover, I don't know. My 5yo boy has seen one of those little info-mercials advertising the liquid glass scratch repair. We tell him not to scratch his glasses and he says we need to get that if his are scratched. I don't know how well that stuff works. I would like to hear from someone that has used it.
  13. Or it might be quite simple. I got a bit confused the first day I had mine because the GPSr default is land navigation (landmark-LMK) but the user manual talks in sea navigation (waypoint-WPT). Landmarks and waypoints are the same. The way I understand it is you want to enter coordinates for a geocache. Push "Thumbtack" button (lower left hand side) one (1) time. Push "Return" button (upper right hand side) one (1) time. Push the large round directional button up or down to select your letter or number. Push the directional button to the right for the next letter or number. I use the geocaching waypoint codes that are specific for that cache. "Return" to move to the next field which is icons. "Return" to be able to select a specific icon. Tent, car, house, square... "Return" moves to the coordinates position. "Return" again to change coordinate numbers. Up or down changes the number and right or left selects which number you will change. "Return" to proceed to your next field. If you make a mistake somewhere and want to go back (or forward to finish faster), push "return". This will highlight the next area and you will be able to push the directional button up or down to move between fields. When your field is highlighted "enter" again to edit that info. Now be sure to "SAVE LMK" at the bottom. Push "Hiker" (middle right side), select USER, Pick your specific waypoint or landmark and "return" I hope this helps and is what you were looking for. If not, ignore it as useless rambling.
