  1. Way too much time on my hands.... You'll see why in a minute. ***************** I received an email from someone who said they found one of my caches and made a couple of comments about it...nothing bad. The finder didn't log the find on the cache web page. I did a search for the finder's name in both found and hidden areas. The finder had no record of either type. I attempted a profile find using different numbers....mine for instance is 2468 I think. I went up by counts of 10,000 until I finally discovered that somewhere between 115,000 and 120,000 people are registered users at geocaching.com. However, as I searched these numbers I discovered people who might have joined in August of 2001 and who didn't have any finds or hides. This MIGHT mean they just didn't participate, or it might mean they sign on, get lists of caches near them, go find them and then neither log on to the web site, and maybe not even log in at the cache. I know some of us have seen at least an instance of someone who writes in the physical log but doesn't log on the web page site. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. recent member. When this person's profile comes up, you can go to the address bar in your browser and change the number at the end to something else and another persons profile will come up. Of the 115,000+ members who are registered, I was thinking only about 40 to 60K were active...seems like I read that somewhere. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  2. quote:Originally posted by Green Achers:Nice map Ron. Where did you get that? And what is ST85QN? Looks familier! _Bill of Green Achers_ Hey Bill.. Any mapping progam like TOPO from Delorme, TOPO! from National Geographic, etc allows you to load in waypoint pushpins and tracks from your gps. This was the track from my China Gulch hike with one way in (in the middle) and another way out. Yes, the one in the water is yours. State Quarters. I think Two Dollar Bill is going for it soon along with my Fac-Pac. Since he's already placed four caches in the area, he gets a *buy* on having to place a new one if he finds Fac-Pac. 3. Looks like Friday was a good day to go caching as it is raining in Stockton today...Saturday. I did the 9 mile round-trip hike at China Gulch trail...north shore Lake Camache and found Two Dollar Bill's four caches, starting with this one...Cash Clips. Good hike and good caches, but GREAT FTF prizes! I won't be forgetting that trip soon. The BBQ is worth seeing (not a cache) and the RED pointer is a gulch with really red soil. ********************* Meanwhile, there are about 4 other new caches within 20 miles of me, so it looks like there are some opportunities here for anyone who wants them. 4. quote:Originally posted by georgeandmary:Can't find them if no one's hiding them. george According to the statistics from MY zip code, there are *around* 2,500 caches within 100 miles. 5. quote:Originally posted by Fallen:This is like some sort of GeoCaching slump. Is it a slump or a black hole? Or in your case a worm hole? Maybe it's a ground squirrel hole? 6. Pepper... Well, as a matter of fact, I AM playing golf tomorrow, but I DID find two caches just 11 miles away today! Overall I have cut back a lot from the days when I would cache 3 or 4 days a week and would make trips to find 20 or so a day. I think I have reached the point when finding film containters is losing it's appeal. I'll slowly work my way up to 1,000 and see what happens after that. Ron I've never been lost. 7. Always glad to help the powers that be.... Got this nice message return on my post for how to see the *real* profile. ********** Groundspeak Lackey posted April 08, 2003 04:34 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ron - Thanks for posting that workaround. I was meaning to post a similar one but kept forgetting. Hopefully we'll get the updated software soon with the real fix. 8. . . For those of you who mourn the loss of the icon which allows you to see a cacher's geocaching.com profile (not the forum profile) try this: Click on the forum poster's name above the picture on the left side of the post. When the drop down box comes up, click on *see posts by this cacher* (or words to that effect). When a list of forum posts comes up, click on the person's name on the right side of the page. This brings up the forum poster's *real* profile. Not as convenient as the old one step icon approach, but it works and is especially useful for cachers who are unknown to you. Enjoy! 13. quote:Originally posted by Green Achers:At least someone has free time to go caching! _Bill of Green Achers_ I've got the time, but not so much the inclination of late. Today however it was hard to resist two new ones only 11 crow-flying miles from my home. These were placed by a new cacher....Paradox72 Ron I've never been lost. 14. Bill.... "They" say if you have to explain a joke, it wasn't told right...maybe, but ..... Look at the quote as I rewrote it, and compare its contents to the Naked TV content in the ad above and it'll make more sense. (I think, hope, guess...etc) As far as the TV show goes, it's a real one, but unfortunately they haven't contacted me yet about geocaching. On a related note, there is actually a couple who go by the name of "geo-nudists" or something like that. Talk about running into a scary situation while out geocaching ! Ron I've never been lost. 15. Bill.... When did you change your signature line...(see below)? "The woman who reads nothing at all, is better educated then the woman who reads nothing but newspapers." Thomas Jefferson A curious coincidence? I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  16. I got the idea for this upcoming tv feature story from the antics of the River City Geocaching & Dining Society. Why is this man smiling? Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  17. If you liked the story in The Record, you'll probably like this upcoming tv feature on geocaching...featuring yours truly. Why is this man smiling? Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  18. The trick is to be the First To Find (FTF). That way, if the cache placer put in some nice things in the first place, and you bring something *nice* too, at least the NEXT person to come along will have a shot at being nice one more time. You could also go for MORE caches in a wider variety of spots (cities, states, countries). You might experience some nicer finds that way. My best finds were FTF finds: A $40 Red Lobster dinner card, a $10 Starbucks card, a $5 Jamba Juice card, a $5 grocery store card. These were in four separate caches found over two years. They were placed by four different people. Admittedly, it's not all that many *great* finds for the number of caches I have found, but as time goes by, maybe the thrill of the find itself will do it for you. But there comes a point when even that palls. Now I really enjoy the one in 25 caches that offer a unique hide in some way. Ron (784 found/176 hidden...since Feb, 2001) I've never been lost. 19. I must have been out caching when this one hit the fan! Locationless caches may get their own area...like benchmarks It's an interesting thread I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.

  22. Hey Bill (and David) Yep, it's a mess. A response I made to Bill just a few hours ago ended up at the bottom of page 60 I think it was, now page 61 and 62 are back but my note is gone. Best not to put anything important here for a few days I guess. *********** Bill... I just published six or so caches, some of which I actually placed some time ago...just got around to it. I think the reason the forums aren't so busy is: People have things to do besides caching. people have things to do besides TALK about caching. People have lives besides caching! But I DID like using the bulleted list ! Ron (forgot to mention......) I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  23. Bill... I think what gets people responding on the forums is something NEW. The Get The Point cache was certainly worth commenting on as an example. The comments right now are about the NEW forum format. I think there is also a point in everyone's geocaching career when *it* becomes a bit of a ho-hum and it TAKES something new and exciting to elicit any comments here. Then of course there is the rest of *life* which can be large outside geocaching. So, all of the above might have something to do with the low-level of forum activity right now. (ribbet) I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  24. I was in Italy in October of 2002 and while I didn't have a complete list of caches I could look for, I DID place a few. My favorite memories of my trip are of the nice hike at Cinque Terra, and so I recommend this one I placed there. Cinque Terra--Corniglia I also placed a film cannister in a car wreck in a wilderness area in Rome, but I doubt you will find your way to that one! I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
  25. Is it just me, or is it no longer possible to go to a forum poster's profile from an icon in the forums? That was a valuable feature....reading someone's post and then being able to go see *who they are* from their profile icon. Hope the admins will add that feature back...unless it's there and I just don't see it. Ron I've never been lost. Fearsome confused sometimes, but never lost.
