  1. How can I stop travel bug notifications for other than my TB's
  2. Some websites will not allow direct linking to images on their site. To test that theory, paste the image in a post here in between [ img ] and [ /img ] tags (without the spaces) and see if it works. If all else fails, upload the image to your cache page, get the URL to the image, then use that URL for your background image. Uploading the image from my Desktop to the cache page and then using that URL worked PERFECTLY... Many thanks.. .I should have thought of doing that!!

  4. Hello Either I have forgotten how to put a background image on a cache page of mine or I am doing something wrong. I found an image both on Bing and google, took the URL and pasted it to the background image URL box on my caches web site. Neither worked. Then I tried putting an image from my Picasa web site, again without any luck. Would someone be kind enough to clue me in on the steps to accomplish this task if in fact I have forgotten how. Or, is Groundspeak having an issue after re-doing their web site the other day? Many thanks in advance. Herb (NavySparksandTheMrs)
  5. Can someone explain to me how to go about adding a .jpg photo to the profile page? I am interested in adding one along with some of the text. I am not referring to the regular photo in the upper right corner of a profile page. TIA
  6. Hi Eveyone, I just mentione it because some time ago offoute told me that they had been dropped by the web site, they did not depart on their own.
  7. Hello! When I first started geocaching the geocaching.com home page listed http://www.offroute.com as a source for receivers and accessories. Then a while back for some reason they were dumped and replaced by REI. I have done business with REI for over 20 years but their prices normally are high for GPS gear. Additionally, offroute.com carries a greater stock and has about the best prices going. I have purchased two GPS receivers from them over the last year along with some other goodies. When you call on the phone you get a friendly knowledgeable human, not a voice prompt program. Three days ago I called and ordered a Garmin 60CS with normal FedEX delivery. It was shipped the morning I called and was at my door the next day. The same thing happened last year when I ordered a Garmin etrex Vista C. They are located in Nevada which helped the deliver time as I am in California but that is excellent service. I had a question about the unit and when I called again the guy yesterday he was friendly and helpful. I do not know why geocaching.com dropped this company in favor of REI but price wise they were not doing the geocaching community a favor. Now that REI has been dropped I sure would like to see offroute.com back on the geocahing.com home page. I think doing this would be a great service to those in the market for GPS gear and it could save them a good amount of money. Just my two cents worth.
  8. Hi Everyone, I started out with the yellow Garmin etrex and a couple of months ago I purchased the new Garmin etrex Vista C with the color display. The Vista C is a great GPS and does everything I would want for geocaching. It also seems to work well under tree cover and a bit better than the yellow etrex. Garmin is the only brand I have any experience with but I am very happy thus far. By the way, I got mine from http://www.offroute.com/index.asp?ref=E041007 and their prices are very good....MUCH better than REI. Cheers!
  9. Thanks again to you all for your comments and I sincerely appreciate your taking the time to do so. The TB is all registered and ready to go as soon as I find a cache for him. MERRY CHRISTMAS!
  10. Hi ZackJones, That is a seriously neat TB...wish I had come up with it. I was into cycling...touring and a little racing for about 18 years but had to give it up due to a problem with a disc in my neck. Still miss riding very much and it really bugs me when I see guys up in the Santa Cruz Mountains here in the SF Bay Area as I loved climbing and descending. Geocaching has been really neat for me as it has got me back out in the country which is where I enjoyed riding so much. Good luck with your TB and hope he travels far.
  11. Hi ZackJones, Good question regarding the goal! Been pondering that and guess it would be to travel as much as possible and to give hope and comfort to those who have cancer or to those who know someone with it. However, your point that it could end up missing is a very good one which I have considered too. To be honest I am a BIG fan of Lance Armstrong and just thought it would be a cool and a bit different TB.
  12. Thank you all for your comments and I really appreciate your taking the time to let me know what you think. Although I have really gotten into geocaching big time I have only been doing it since this last June. Still feel a bit of a newbie and did not want to do anything that would go against any rules. The LAF is a good cause so what the heck...I will go for it. Thanks again to you all and MERRY CHRISTMAS! Herb
  13. Hello, I am thinking of putting out a Travel Bug that is one of the Lance Armstrong wristbands. However, would it be considered not correct if I explained what the wristband is all about which would include the web site http://www.laf.org? Thinking this over I suspect I have already answered my own question but would appreciate your feedback. Mentioning the web site and the LAF probably would be considered commerical. However, if I just put the TB on the wristband without mention of the LAF organization it would probably be OK as I have found a LAF wristband in a cache (not as a TB) already. Comments will be sincerely appreciated. Herb (NavySparksandtheMrs)
  14. I just recently purchased a Garmin etrex Vista C which I am very happy with. May I suggest you check out http://www.offroute.com/ for whatever unit you decide on. I got my Vista C there at an excellent price. The service was outstanding on both it and another item I bought last week. Ordered both one day and had them the next. They use to be posted on geocaching's home page but recently have been replaced by REI. Why I do not know as REI's prices are VERY high.
  15. Hi Everyone, I purchased a Garmin etrex Vista C from offroute.com about a month ago. Called them on the phone to see if they had it in stock....no phone menu...just a very helpful guy answering the phone who had the info I needed. Ordered it then and decided for FEDEX overnigh delivery. Something I would normally never do due to the added cost but could not wait to have the little critter in my hands. Called at 1100 and Mr. FEDEX man was at my door at the about the same time the next day. Super service and outstanding price that was within about five bucks of the best price I could find surf'in the Internet. I would put them number one on any of my GPS type purchases. I see that geocaching.com has dropped them and now has REI and I agree with previous posts about REI being VERY EXPENSIVE as far as GPS units are concerned.
  16. Hi virgo91967 Yep, I sure learned my lesson. Will be much more careful in the future. Now, I am just not sure what to do to get my cache listed as I still have not heard anything after re-submission and two emails to the reviewer.
  17. Hi Prime Approver... Guess my question now is what would you suggest I do since this amount of time has passed. Just wait some more or should I re-post my cache as a new one? My only fear there is that it might end up being put up twice...TIA
  18. Thanks everyone and Keystone Approver I did email him on the 16th and again this last Friday but have not heard from him...
  19. OK...guess the bottom line here now is that I am confused. This is what the heading part of my cache looks like: ------------------------------------- This is a Regular cache. 20. Hi to both of you and thanks for your replies. Yes, I have clicked that box (if I understand correctly) that should have activated things so he would know.
  21. Hi Everyone, On 16 August I placed two caches. Goofed on both. One I did not know a cache was close to where I placed my first one. My second cache placement was a total goof up on my part when I checked the distance to the nearest cache. Both were archived by a reviewer...as they should be. One reviewer had me go through a procedure to notify him that I had moved the location and I did so. He got back to me within 24 hours activating my cache. The other reviewer however did not have me go through the same procedure and just told me to change the location and let him know, which I did. A couple days went by so Friday I emaild him just check that he got the info that I had fixed the problem but as of this evening on 23 Aug 04 I have not heard from him and my cache has not been activated. Just in chase something has gone wrong what proceedure would I go through to get my cache approved...i.e., who should I contact...Or, should I just resubmit the cache as a new one? TIA for any suggestions.
  22. Hi traveytrav I also purchased the book as I have only been into geocaching for a little over a month. I discovered that I already knew a fair amount that is in the book from just digging through the geocache.com web site. However, it is well written and still had a lot of good info I did not know. I would recommend it to anyone who is just getting into geocaching. Once you are experienced it would be a good ref to have handy to loan to friends who become interested in our great activity. I had to hunt a bit for it though as I wanted it right away as both Borders and Barnes and Noble did not have it. A local independent book store did stock it.
  23. Hi Searching_ut... Thanks for your comments and I found them very interesting. I too have been comparing my new "C" to my previous GPS receiver, a yellow etrex and the "C" does seem to do just a bit better in the signal department. It really bugs me on some of the incomplete manuals that companies seem to put out these days...but guess that is just to be expected in recent times. Other than that gripe I have been very happy with my two Garmin products. Thanks for the comments too on the menus....yes, will give them closer attention. I was out placing two new caches and it seemed that the "C" came up with repeatable position data a bit better than my yellow etrex. Not a big improvement, but it did seem to do just a bit better. Needless to say I love the color high resolution screen compared to the yellow guy. Speaking of the 'yellow guy' its new owner is my wife who has become turned on with geocaching too. And, I still like the 'yellow guy' as it has done a fine job for me in the past. So my wife and I are two newbies learning the ropes. Herb (NavySparks)
  24. Fantastic!! Many thanks Got GPS....I should have thought of that. I am a month old newbie and you folks on this forum site are great. Again, thanks for the help. Herb (NavySparks)
  25. Hi Everyone I purchased a Garmin etrex Vista C a couple of days ago and follow just about everything I have tried to do using the unit and instruction book. There is one question I hope someone can help me out with however. In the .pdf manaul I downloaded (just to have as a back up if something should happen to the original) I noticed they show the satellite bars in multiple colors. My unit displays just one color for all the satelites being received. I can find no mention of adding multiple colors either in the instruction book, original or .pdf version, and see no option for doing so in the 'System Setup" on screen options. Since Garmin shows the multiple colors I would think there is a way I can come up with this type of display. TIA:)
