  1. As far as opening up an area, RI is the cache densest state, yet we still find places to hide caches.

Slightly off-topic, I found a while back that New Hampshire had the greatest excess of caches when one took into account (by some stats I pulled out of a hat) other factors like population density. Rhode Island was up there, but not top. I think maybe Utah was second.

  2. Some this is also something I am wondering about. I have gone to the home page for geocoins and it does show me a map, but not of my area. It seems like every time I go to the page the map shows me a different location. Today it was New York City, NY. The other day it was in Europe, China and random other counties. I am in Montana so those maps do no good for me. Has anybody else had an issue like this and know how to fix it. I'm new to geocaching and really excited to start finding and tracking geocoins and travel bugs.

It looks like having the Geocoin Information Page display a map that's centred on your home coordinates is a Premium Member feature. That's totally unclear from the page text, so I've flagged it (the page text, not the random mapping) as a bug: forum topic here.

  3. The map on this page works properly only if you're a PM, or so it seems.

Please fix it so that the page text makes that clear.

    For example:

    Geocoin Information Page

A Geocoin is a special coin created by individuals or groups of geocachers as a kind of signature item or calling card. Like Travel Bug® Trackables, each Geocoin is assigned a unique tracking ID which allows them to travel from geocache to geocache or to be passed amongst friends, picking up stories along the way.

    Geocoins Near Your Home Location

This feature is available only to Premium Members. Non-PMs get random mapping.

  4. I sympathise with anyone that expects a politely-worded and relevant email to a CO to be answered. As a CO, you're adding something to the game for finders to enjoy: it seems oddly blinkered and self-centred to subsequently ignore messages sent to you concerning the cache.

  5. Thanks KBLAST for that. I haz computa skilz ... not.

I'm sorry' date=' but I can not recommend iphone.cachers as cachers of the month. I was at an event where new cachers were especially welcomed in April or May where the participants were specifically told it was not a race, they ended up making it a race with another team. Members of the two teams were grabbing log books out of people's hand while others were patiently waiting and then throwing the logbooks back in to the cache rather than handing it to the people they cut in front of. There was also people laying down in the road in order to block other geomobiles from going forward in the event. If I had been a new geocacher, I don't think I would have continued after being that rudely treated. The location where this event was held had been the sight of some very unfriendly interactions between the police and cachers previously, if the police had seen what was going on that day, there could have been more unfriendly interactions. Their actions and the actions of the other team did not positively promote geocaching that day. They sound like wonderful people and assets to the geocaching community overall but their antics that day did nothing to impress myself and several other geocachers.[/quote']

I do not remember being specifically told it was not a race. On top of that, I see no problem with two groups of friends jokingly competing with one another. As to your reference of anyone involved "grabbing log books out of people's hands," I don't know how you have edited your memory, but that CERTAINLY did NOT happen. There was one point when we (by the way, iphone.cachers is not part of this we) didn't realize that someone was waiting behind us, so we (respectfully) replaced everything in the cache as found (putting the log book back in the container and closing it up). When we stood up we realized that there were people standing behind us and we even APOLOGIZED; if we had known someone was waiting behind us, we certainly would have handed off the log book. How this got turned into "throwing the logbooks back in the cache" I cannot tell.

I see no problem with two groups of friends having some friendly competition with each other, and if we were rude, it was certainly not conscious. And personally, I think it is very rude of you to bring this up in your post. If you didn't want to vote for iphone.cachers, then simply don't post anything at all.

    :drama:

  6. jri, thanks for taking an interest. I tried your suggestion and now I think I know what I really wanted: it's that when I click on the cache icon, I get an info box that contains all the usual info plus a photo. The photo should be one specified by the CO to be shown on the map ... except gc.com supports no such option for the CO. Ah well ... whatever you can do with panoramio instead (like making photos clickable) would be a good compromise. Cheers!

  7. A digressive random suggestion ... how about the option to include miniature photos on the map, as in panoramio.com?

I mean, wouldn't it be nice to see at a glance what the countryside's like around the area of a potential afternoon's caching without having to open another tab in your browser to visit panoramio or similar? Just a thought.

  8. There isn't a signature in the log that hasn't logged the find... but I'll try to stop worrying.

I'd probably post a non-accusatory note on the TB's web page. Either that or indulge in a massive rant against thieving cache cretins -- it would depend on my beer intake that evening.

We can help you write it if you like. "Dear TB owner ..." Who's next?

  9. Woah, Thysly, you need to grab Mr Travel and take him back home to your computer for a few minutes. If you want to track where he goes, you need to attach Mr Travel to an official numbered travel bug tag, register your ownership of that tag on geocaching.com, then log the fact that you've dropped-off Mr Travel (with his tag) in a cache. Once you've done that, all Mr Travel's adventures will be recorded on Mr Travel's personal web page and will be emailed to you as they happen.

Others here will point you to the instructions for registering and logging a trackable, I'm sure.
