  1. I am on my 3rd Garmin legend, and all of them have been more than satisfactory. BUT my current Legend is not picking up satellites for the past 2 days. The batteries are fully charged, and on the satellite screen, not even one is being picked up. I have NOT turned off the satellites. I was looking forward to using the Legend during this weekend, but I am rather disappointed it is not working. The last time it worked was Aug. 28. I have just sent a note to GArmin tech support. Any thoughts, anyone?
  2. I have a Garmin Legend, and would like to try out the Garmin Foretrex or Forerunner 301. I don't want to buy it outright as yet. I was wondering if anyone with a 301 might let me borrow it for a couple of days in exchange for my Garmin eTrex Legend. I am in the DC area.
  3. I have been playing with Google Earth (earth.google.com) for some time now and with Virtual Earth (virtualearth.com) since last Sunday. I highly recommend both to those that want to look at their environment from a new angle (from the air, that is). The question I have is, has anyone managed to superimpose one's biking or jogging tracks from the GPS onto these images? Google Earth has a GE Plus service that allows some GPS functionality; I haven't tried that so far, however.
  4. I have just lost my Garmin legend I (it was stolen from my bike). I would like to get it replaced, but don't want to spend an arm and a leg. Let me know if you might have a Legend to sell at this time. Thanks

  7. Hi! See my post on a brand-new - in original unopened packaging - Zire 31 PDA (about 4-5 postings down from yours) for $130. I am about to put it up on Ebay. Let me know if you have any questions.
  8. For sale - Brand new Palm Zire 31 PDA. Major features: color screen, 16 MB ram, MP3 capability with expansion card Photo viewer Bought it for my daughter as a birthday present, but she doesn't seem to want it! Unit is unopened and is in factory packaging. Asking $135. Will put it up on ebay over the weekend if no takers here. Will take PayPal.
  9. For sale, new Garmin Vista (less than 1 mth old), used three times. 24 MB memory, built-in compass and altimeter. Will throw in brand-new case and bike mount, all for $200. Will send it overnight by Fed Exp for $10 more. Will put it up on Ebay in a couple of days, if no interest here.
  10. I am looking for the least expensive PDA alternative that would work with my Garmin Legend or Vista. Any suggestions woule be much aprpeciated.
  11. I tried out my GPS along with MS Streets and Trips 2004 for the first time today on a drive (while in the passenger seat, of course!). It was good to see the car symbol move against the map background. But I didn't see any tracks. Is there a way to retrace the route on MS S&T? Also, is there a way to see the speed displayed on the laptop? I know both of these are available on the GPS itself, but I wanted to see them on the laptop.
  12. Just to remind those of you that might be interested in the Legend. Mine is brand new, unopened, in original packaging. I just bought this second one for my wife, but she is not as keen on geocaching as I happen to be. That's why I am selling it. $140 includes overnight delivery via FedExpress.
  13. Garmin Etrex Legend, 8 MB memory. Brand new. Original packaging. $140 will get it in your hands via overnight delivery.
  14. I second that. I acquired a Garmin Legend and a bike mount recently, and the bike mount would not work as advertised (the D ring will turn only 45 degrees, that too only with some force, and it needs to turn 90 degrees so it can be folded flat; see my posting on this). I wrote to Garmin service, and they promised to send me a new one, which they did promptly. I received it yesterday. Great service! A postscript to this: Guess what, though! The new bike mount has the same problem, however. In order to get it going, I used a wrench to make the D ring turn 90 deg. The crazy part is I need a wrench to turn the D ring back so I can get at the batteries! Imagine having to carry a wrench with me all the time! I haven't had a chance to write to Garmin yet about it. It was a great feeling riding my bike last night with the trip computer screen displaying my speed, average speed, and 4 or 6 other variables (with the screen backlight turned on permanently.
  15. I just got MS Streets&Trips, and find I am unable to load it due to one limitation or the other on any of my three PCs (one desktop and two laptops). The software requires 400-500 MB for the limited installation and 1 GB for the full install. My desktop has 4 GB but it has Windows 95, and the SW requires Win98 or later. One of the laptops has the reqd disk space but it has no CD. The other latop has a CD, but the diskdrive is rather full. I am looking for suggestions (other than mass deletion of files on the laptop with the CD, or setting up a network, or swapping the CD).
  16. I can't get Rand McNally's StreetFinder and Trip Maker (2 separate pieces of software) to recognize my Garmin Legend. Can anybody shed any light on this problem? On a related note, I am wondering what the differneces are between the two pieces of SW. I just got them, and they look to be more or less the same.
  17. I just figured this out. While in USAPhotoMaps, GPS-Tracks-Receive Specify a name for the file GPS-Tracks-Display I am just looking at my bike ride around the DC monuments ths\is morning. My ride is shown against downloaded photos of the relevant portion of Washinton, DC. It is rather nifty. Now, I need to figure out if I can animate my bike ride! Probably not feasible in USAPhotoMaps. I do have one question: there is n o SAVE command. How do I save the photos WITH the tracks?
  18. I would like to view my biking tracks from my Garmin Legend against a photo mosaic of the sites visited, as downloaded from USAPhotomaps (jdmcox.com). Any suggestions?
  19. I just bought a bike to fit my Garmin Legend and its bikemount (if the sequence is odd, that's the way it happened!). The Garmin serves as an expensive but rather nifty trip computer. The question relates to the bikemount. The mount, which also serves as the battery compartment lid, has a D-ring that needs to turn a full 90 degrees clockwise so it can lay flat. While it turns the full 90 degrees without the GPS attached to it, there appears to be a problem when the GPS and the batteries are on the other side of the mount . The D ring turns only 45 degrees. Any thoughts?
  20. When I download tracks from my Garmin Legend into TrackMaker (as well as other GPS software), I appear not to see the time dimension. My impression was that each track point carries lat/long, elevation as well as time. Am I missing something here perhaps?
  21. I just got started GPSing recently with a Garmin etrex Legend. At present, I have neither the cigarette lighter adapter to power the GPS while driving nor an inverter to power a laptop (once I buy some mapping software). The question I have relates to the best way to power up the GPS as well as a laptop while taking road trips. Wouldn't an inverter be a better way to go about it? Any suggestions?
  22. I am a relative newbie on GPS, but have more or less mastered most of the functions in my Garmin Etrex Legend. I am trying to find out if there is any public domain software that will allow me to play back my walks or biking GPS tracks when I am at home. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Many thanks Huntley
