  1. Sounds interesting, do you have a youTube link, or photos so I can picture it?
  2. When you say virtual caching, do you mean literally Virtual Geocaching? Or are you using that as a pseudonym for Waymarking? If it were geocaching, I would run a Pocket Query for only Geocaches, and import it into android app C:Geo. I was just now wondering if a Waymarking gpx file could be imported into C:Geo?
  3. If I were doing it all again, I wouldn't purchase a GPS unit. For Waymarking there is really no value in the little extra precision you might get from a handheld. stand alone unit. If all you are doing is posting waymarks, stick with your iPhone app. For geocaching, I find it easier using my Garmin Oregon. It has more precise coordinates, updates more frequently. Given that, I still don't see the value of paying 300+ for the unit. When using the Android app, I need a little more geosense, but otherwise it does good enough.
  4. There is a nice one at Tivoli Park in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Just looking at it scared the bejeebers out of me, though. I can't find my picture, but I have a shot of a tower that was going to be a part of a ski jump they never built. http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/11054a/
  5. I'll ditto the guy up there. ^^^^^^^^. Most Categories don't make it on the first submission. The Peer review process involves subjectivity, and you can never know what a person is thinking unless they share it with you. When you rewrite the category, take into account the feedback you were given, and try to clearly spell out anything that might not be clear. For example, you can tell us why this isn't a subcategory of towers, I'd even copy/paste from Bruce to start. The more I read about it, the more I like it.
  6. Maybe there should be a time limit on them, and they would "Fall off" after a certain amount of time? When I put up UCM's it's always my intent to delete them when they become categorized, but I sometimes forget.
  7. I had some fun playing with this on my Android. It all seemed to function properly. The next thing I would like would be to be able to use those coordinates to "seed" a new waymark. I was thinking the create a waymark would come up with the coordiunates pre-filled in, and I could put in the name using the actual Waymarking page and click the two I agrees, and then come back late to finish it in my unfinished waymarks queue. I think that I would be able to click the Camara for get a file from and I could take and upload my photo right then. Alternatively, maybe your webpage would be able to do this, but I think it would start to be trouble if an interface clicked the "I agree" buttons.
  8. I've had a couple of visitors recently using my waymarks as a Ljubljana travel guide. With Ljubljana being such a small city it's easy to condense the "Best of" into a set of waymarks.
  9. As a rule of thumb, I would say there is no rule of thumb you could apply across Waymarking.
  10. Here is another I'm not sure where to place. I originally thought WWII, but in poking about with google translate, I can't find any words that suggest WWII. Part is written in Italian, and part Croatian. The word Fasana - Fazana is the city it is in. It seems to be talking about the peoples revolution? The only Date in 1970 , but I think thats when it was placed.
  11. http://www.redbubble.com/people/machka/works/6996660-brijuni-statue To me the statue looked like Thor, because of the hammer I can't find anything documenting the statue online, and no plaque at the statue. The tour guide said this nearby statue was figurative for "Love" http://www.croatian-adriatic.eu/istria/img-hr-brijunske-ostrovy-5.html Am I better off guessing at Thor, and having anyone that ever names it in the future say it IS Thor, and citing me as the source? If the nearby statue was figurative for Love, would there be something figurative about this one that might fit with the theme?
  12. When officers aren't active it skews the voting process.
  13. Waymarking doesn't require you to be logged on to view. If an app found your location via the smart phone, and returned a list of waymark URL's near those coordinates. The URL itself is not proprietary, and it contains the name of the waymark. At that point, click through to use the Waymarking website in the cell phone browser. I don't see where one would hit upon the TOS in that process. I would consider it somthing akin to the indexing spiders. Once I was able to determine where "near me" was with the first waymark, the existing waymark in the cell phone browser would allow me to expand. It's just a pain in the neck to get to the first waymark through the Waymarking.com interface using the cell phone. I agree that the deeper functionality of Waymarking would be difficult to do with a screen scraping app, and would likely cause a problem. Once upon a time, there were no API's, and screen scraping was the only way to get some things done.
  14. GT.US, there is no space for the subjectivity reason in the thread I started. Look at the two examples I provided, specially the second.... it's totally objective. Rules say that, the description of the waymark says the opposite. Since reviewers haven't been to each place being waymarked, there is a certain amount of trust that the waymarker is submitting according to the rules necessary. Just looking at a map doesn't tell the reviewer that a scenic overlook isn't reachable by car. Could it be down a flight of stairs? Is 20 feet from parking acceptable, or must it be a mile from parking? If the rule is 50 feet, might you bend the rule for a 49 feet that is really amazing? What might seem clear and concise to one person can seem vague and subjective to another. The best we can do is learn from our mistakes and go on. I have updated category descriptions in an attempt to clarify points.
  15. This was in a very small town called Cazma, and about a dozen people on it. I was with the cousin of my b/f. He told me he knew and served with every person on the memorial, and two were in his same class at school. One comitted suicide, but lived for hours after and they had spent his last hours together. It took 20 years to put up the memorial, because the emotions were so raw for so long, and really still are. I've heard so many horrer stories.
  16. You can see your waymark from geocaching.com if you are in a geocache page, and click "Find nearest waymarks". If you had waymarks close to your own geocache, you could put them onto the geocache as additional waypoints, and include some commentary. Often when I am logging a geocache, I will comment on the nearby waymarks. Example: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=a591aa2b-28a8-4022-9407-37de440b6954
  17. Is it possible to develop an app without an API? One of the negatives in Waymarking is that things never change. But that would be a plus for an app that used screen scraping as opposed to an API.
  18. I was in Croatia last week and spotted a memorial to those that died in the Yugoslavian break-up war. Would that Eastern Freedom Fighters, as they started out communist and ended not communist, even though that wasn't the point of it. The Political Revolutions seems like also a good choice. I'm just back and still a little jet lagged so I haven't done any homework. Just thought I would ask since the subject is open here.
  19. I noticed it a year or two ago. Someone has to pay for the servers and the programming, and a unobtrusive link doesn't bug me any.
  20. I have a tough time reviewing in the Gi-Normous Everyday Objects category. I get a lot of "But there is another similar" arguments. The rules have changed over the years, and also being a subjective category some reviewers are a little easier than others. What I would like to do is go through and tag the subject line with a [GF] for grandfathered waymarks that wouldn't pass review today.
  21. Personally, I have a tough time writing a visit log. That's why I like to upload a picture, because it's easier than trying to find something to say about a waymark that has already said all there is to say about it. The way I see a visit is an affirmation that my work creating the waymark had value to someone, and I would never complain about how they chose to express that. It goes to the "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" school of thought. If I had my druthers, though, I would always like a picture, as I am not the greatest photographer and when there are additional pictures I can switch out the main shot. And, of course, if someone was bending over backwards to pile on the praise and stoke my ego, I wouldn't complain either.
  22. They mentioned that two cities were served by boats, but didn't mention the second. There is a zip code that is the Detroit River and only served by boat. I wonder if that was the second? My sister sends her Christmas cards to various Christmas Named cities each year to get a special postmark.
  23. It's can be a pain to make two different waymarks, with the uploading pictures and all, but I like seeing the same thing from different perspectives. If you want to upload pics once, and submit twice, start by uploading pictures as an uncategorized waymark, and then categorize it multiple times for each different submission. The caveat is that you have to use two different IDs to complete the process.
  24. In WWII (where I am an officer) there are memorials from all over the world. I have some with Red Stars on them (That I submitted). I like the idea of a category showing the big picture of all aspects of the war. I can see some sensitivity to that particular war, as the wound is still fresh, and many of us still have memories of it and have had personal impacts of some sort. Given that, I would still find it interesting and informative to see all the ripples from that stone. A funny story slightly related. When I was 11 years old our class was assigned to write a letter to the president of Vietnam asking them to stop the war. We had to write it on white paper first and have it approved, then we would copy it to the blue airmail letter. I wrote a very nice letter telling them if they wanted to be communist, they could stay communist over there, and as long as they didn't come over her and be communist, everything would be fine and no need for a war. Teacher told me I couldn't write that it was okay for anyone to be a communist, so I had to start over.
