  1. Thanks for the help, I will get my list together and make contact. They littered the area with micros. It is sad because as an organization we encourage caching and think it is consistent with our mission. Are policies are very accommodating and basically boil down to ask permission, don't keep it in the same spot for more than 3 years (to reduce impact) and don't let it look like a suspicious object (clearly marked as a cache, no pipes etc). This kind of thing (flippantly doing it anyway even though they knew they couldn't) can sour policy writers.
  2. I was asked by fellow cachers if they can place a cache. I am a land manager. I informed them of the process. They ignored it and placed the multiple caches anyway. I can easily remove the the physical cache, but they are placed in sensitive areas. I wan the listing removed so people don't trample all over looking for them even after the cache is removed.
  3. I think a lot of the junk is other peoples signature items.
  4. I have been caching since '04 with many many cache's under my belt. I often sign the physical log but never log online. I keep a little notebook for my own records.
  5. As a Park Ranger myself that sounds like a fantastic interaction. I guess I am surprised at other states where the Rangers are unaware of geocaching. We have a state policy on it. I do think though that this a huge loss of opportunity on the part of the cache placers. They are supposed to be asking permission to place the cache and that is when the have the opportunity to be ambassadors for the caching community. Park staff want people out enjoying their parks in every manor that doesn't damage it. Who knows what would come of it if they had approached them before placing the cache. Heck in my state we started giving classes on it years ago.
  6. I know many have expressed that they don't have any desire for it, but I hope hiding on the other side of that rock and roller in some model is a camera lens. Like many here I don't have a need for it in caching but I do for many other things. Primarily planning trail work on state lands. I know it is all most all just speculation at this point but preloaded software maps makes me wonder if they will ship it with anything other than trip and waypoint manager. I like being able to plan things out and look at them first on the computer. It sounds like the topo version is using there own competing product to NG topo! (3d views etc). Of course magellens deal with NG was non exclusive. So who knows.
  7. http://www.blade-tech.com/Garmin-GPS-pouch...ok-pr-1062.html This is the best one I found that meets my needs. Top notch product. GPS screen is not visible while in pouch though so your millage may very. Secure and protected. I only wish I could get one for a digital camera but there are so many models out there the chances of one coming out for my model is nil.
  8. While not an combat engineer (I was infantry) I have some thoughts, I won't direct you to a specific model but list some things. Small and light - he will be carrying enough stuff with body armor in the heat, you may think that the difference between the weight of a geko and 60cx is not much but it all adds up. Screen protectors - you don't want an unusable unit after exposure to winds and sand - likewise a small pouch to hold it. Maps - not really needed for the majority of uses - they are nice but if it was me I wouldn't bother. The millitary Gpsr's don't have them. Skateboard tape/ larger button. I put some skateboard tape (stair tread tape) on my unit so it wouldn't be slippery in sweaty hands. Larger button are better for gloved hands (or buttons that are spaced well). Lanyard hole and pouch - protect it and keep it with you. It is no good if you loose it. AA or AAA batteries - no one wants to screw around with a charger. Not an issue with most units - but make sure it can use the UTM grid coordinates. Man overboard feature - quick marking of points on the move is often a requirement. Projected waypoints. A necessity for things like calling in artie (artillery fire). Compass - not really needed. Most things you are going to want to do with the compass require a sighting compass in the military. while I am not really familiar with the units I think a geko would fit the bill.
  9. I have a 60cx but have minimal auto gps needs. These are so cheap now that they are a little more than CN8 with a ram mount. I was thinking of picking one up. It appears they come with software and everything needed. I was thinking about a NUVI but can't justify it with the little bit I would use it. It sounds like it talks but without the text to speech feature "turn left in 300ft" instead of "turn left in 300 ft at elm street". Any feedback on this unit?
  10. So I have been using my 60cx for a while and have been primarily using the topo maps. I also have CN8 loaded for my local area and have used the Routing feature. I am about to go on a trip so I planned the specific route on the desktop. Can I upload just the route or will I have to upload the maps again also? If I just select to upload the routes, which is of course an option - do I loose my maps that are already on the GPS?
  11. Thanks. Is the second number at additional cost or do they just give it to me with that certificate - or for that matter am I compleatly mistaken thinking I can use the software on 2 GPSr's
  12. I am sure this has been brought up before but since everyone abbr. City Navigator I couldn't search for it. Is It normal to only get one certificate? I thought we were able to use it on 2 seperate GPSR's. Or can we use the same number twice? Thanks for any help!
  13. Both are great units but I would suggest you only purchase them if they are great deals, since there is a newer model out of each (the x models) which are quicker to pick up satillites as well as have expandable memory and work better in tree cover. This is not to say that you should not purchase one of these models, Millions upon millions of finds certainly have been logged with them. Just make sure you are not paying the improved model price for the old model.
  14. I use a a little moleskine to log my finds not for nastagia but for practacality, I don't log my finds online.
  15. I carry both a plotting one, the Brunton mentioned in the first post as well as a sighting compas, a brunton eclipse. The Suunto has rather large holes for plotting in my opinion. But now I plot with expert gps primarily.
  16. as stated above when plotting to your paper maps the a dot with the pencil will likely cover a larger area that the difference between the coords.
  17. Most likely from GPSonSale.com and they have it at other sites as well. Personally I wouldn't pay an extra dime for the s model so I got mine from them the 60cx for 300 after the rebate plus shipping.
  18. Thanks guys. I am to chicken to mess with the registry and it took a while to copy the files but I got it. Hi Timpat.
  19. I think the subject line says it all. I used the full install option but it still prompts for the disk. I copied all the files on the disk into the directory I installed the program into and that didn't work. Thanks for any help.
  20. Yes, most people bring the printouts of the cache page with them or they have them downloaded to their geek-a-sketch (hand held computer). That information is on there. Along with lots of other stuff like the clue, parking location or other instructions.
  21. That G number is the number of the cache and is also found on the cache page. Many units only take up to six characters for names. So that is why these numbers are used as opposed to the cache name. Which would be hard any way becuase to different caches could easily have the same first 6 letters.
  22. Thanks for both the suggestions. It looks like they will both do it but expert gps seems to have a cleaner interface all though more money. If any one else is looking for one I also just found a free program called gps trackmaker that does it. I am going to mess around with the expertgps free download.
  23. I am wondering if there is a program that can do the following: Take a scanned map and some how establish a couple of reference points either from the coordants on the map itself or from establishing know points on the map with waypoints from the gpsr. This would then establish the scale of the map as well known reference points. From there you could plot other points and them upload them to your gpsr. The maps themselves would not be uploaded to the GPSr just worked with on the computer. More specifically for my purposes being a park ranger I want to take some maps from various sources (things like mountain biking, bouldering and bootleg skiing maps) and using reference points find other points they depict. I also want to be able to use an uncoventionally scaled yet highly accurate map and use track logs from my gps to plot some social trails that are forming on the scanned image. I am probally not being very clear in explaing myself but any help would be apprieciated.
