  1. This thread is great to read through and makes me giggle. Here is my contribution which is a log for one of my all time favorite caches. Whenever you pull into the parking area and the GPS is pointing to the top, you know it is going to be a long, strenuous hike - not sure topo maps would have helped. The cliff isn't too bad - does help to be a little more youthful, but it is given 3 stars for terrain. Don't understand why this cacher thought they found it when they clearly admit the DNF, I guess it's because they hiked all the way to within 200 ft. Found it05/15/2012 I have been to pressey park many times, and had no idea this area existed. Didnt find the cache though, I got within 200 feet of it, saw a cliff decided I was to tired to climb down that. WIsh my GPS had topo maps
  2. Hi! My family and I are big into the 4-H program and we are currently working with our local staff to create a geocaching/GPS event for our local fair. The problem is, we are not exactly sure how we will set this up so that it will be a competition. The county fair already has the project area of geospatial. The project requires participants make a map. Now, the staff wants to take this to the next level and incorporate geocaching and GPS into the geospatial area. They know they want a beginner and intermediate class that tests your abilities levels. The beginner would exibit the skills of being able to use a GPS (imput coordinates, read GPS, follow) and go to a relitively easy cache (small to medium sized). The intermediate would test your GPS, puzzles skills, and ability to find a cache (micro to small). They are thinking of maybe a multi or puzzle cache for this one. At our county fair, each class would have one Best in Class and one Reserve Best of Class (1st and 2nd). Our problem is how to score partipants so these awards would be available. We really don't want this is be a participation thing where 4-Hers show up with no previous experience. We want this to a be a competition for kids who really want to show off all they've learned. So to summarize, we are looking for any ideas on how you would think this 4-H class/competition would function. We would like to hear ideas for a beginner and intermediate class and how you would judge a competition like this. Thanks for all the help! Little Lady
  3. This is crazy! In my opinion, but this is just a newer cacher perspective, you have to sign the log in order to count it as a find. I have had a cache that I found that was in the top of a road sign, but my family was all too short to reach it plus it was stuck. I did not post a find because I felt like that was cheating. Instead, I posted a note and explained that I found it but couldn't get it out of the hiding space. I do plan on going back with a taller person to sign the log. Some people just need to use their common sense and post a note or DNF instead of claiming a find. On another note, I like the topic. Kinda gets out everyone's frustration.
  4. Thank you for the info. We knew the year and altitude, but did not know about what the station is and the surveyor. This helped answer some of our question! Thanks!!
  5. This week we have been visiting family. I have asked my uncle about benchmarks and if he knows where any are in this area. To my surprise, he knew where several were and took me to one of the locations. At this one, I found the benchmark right by a witness post with the marker in a concrete block a few inches off the ground. I am not able to locate this benchmark on this website, but was successful in finding it on the Topo maps website. Does this mean that it is of a different kind of benchmark or placed by a different company? Since I am new to benchmark hunting, I am curious to see what you guys have to say about it. At this point in time, I am not able to post pictures. This is what is on the benchmark... Around edge - U.S. Geological Survey Benchmark For information write the director Washington D.C. Cooperation with the state In center - Elevation Above (triangle with + in middle) sea 2362 feet TT91KW 1949 Why can I not find this benchmark listed? I know that not all are listed on the website, but this one looks very similar to others I have seen pictures of. Just wanting to learn more about benchmarking and what I have found. Thank you guys so very much for helping me with my questions!!!
  6. Thank you both so much for all your help!! This was found on a bridge in very good condition. Today I will go back out and find the coordinates which would probably help me. Didn't even think about that yesterday!!
  7. Today I found a benchmark purely by mistake while visiting family in central Nebraska. I have searched and searched but have not been able to locate the benchmark page if it has one or find any information out about it based upon the suggested websites. Here is what is listed on the benchmark... At top - State of Nebraska Dept of Roads Middle - 2348.87 Bottom - Benchmark This is all it says so it makes it hard to find online. At this point in time, I am not able to post pictures. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!
  8. We have a Magellan eXplorist 210. When trying to figure out how to download points, we did the wrong thing. Now, it is not responding real well. It comes up saying "Unit currently contains no map! Initiating map upload." We have played with it, and sometimes it will begin to respond but them will stop working. Anyone know what to do to correct this problem? Thanks!!
