I rarely loose reception, and then never for more than a few seconds/yards. In terms of satellite reception, I have found the Vista to be a huge improvement over my beloved-but-obsolete Maggie 300, which was extremely sensitive to tree cover despite its superior antenna. Friends owning the latest Magellans have been more than satisfied with their units, and are reporting excellent success. Hey Mark! Just THINK how many MORE finds you would have with a REAL GPS? LOL! Notice I said it wasnt impossible to do with an etrex, cause I know there are freaks of science out there like you and Stayfloopy. Just prove that for every rule there is always an exception (or 2). 5. quote:Originally posted by majicman: Can someone explain what that meant, now that I am calmed back down? OK. now that you have calmed down.... I Doubt very much I called you a troll (someone who posts just to start arguments or heated discussions). I don't think I ever got an email from you, and I was pretty busy with work for the last 3-4 months, and very well might have missed a forum post directed to me. As for being a sock puppet, I may have insinuated that I thought you might be that, but it is in no way an insult. Your writing style and sense of humor reminded me of another popular poster here who has been know to use a sockpuppet or two, with very humorous results. In this case, consider it a compliment. I suspect some of the other "questionable" cachers in this thread lean more toward cotton footware then bridge tenders. So hopefully your still cool calm and collected? Illegitimus non carborundum!
  6. I'm gonna side with the rest of the local cachers. The cache has been out awhile, things in nature change. I'm sure there was no nest of water snakes near the 1st cache when it was hidden in the winter. That being said, as populated as NJ is, whe still have our fair share of wildlife, some of it dangerous. You need to use common sense and care, and also accept that nature is not predictable. Say we eliminate every cache where there was any possible chance of being attacked by a bear, a bobcat, a wolf (yes, we have those here in NJ), a raccoon, snake, rabid hamster, or a dog off his leash. Now lets drop those caches in high crime areas where the most dangerous animal is man. Archive any cache close enough to a road where a car careening out of control might hit you. Remove any cache that is more then 3 feet from a paved trail, so you dont trip over a rock or a log. Make sure there are no steps on that trail, so you dont trip. Eliminate any that MIGHT have poison ivy grow near them in the next few years. Now, if there are still any caches left, lets get rid of them, because you might get bit by a skeeter with West Nile, or a Lyme infected tick. Geee, what a fun hobby Geocaching will be then, huh? 8. Just checked back on that seller's feedback. He is now listed as "Not a Registered User". This means either he has cancelled his ebay account himself, or more likely, ebay has revoked it. Given this turn of events I would now contact ebay immediately. I would check again with the bank and see if A) the check has been cashed yet, and if they have any fraud protection policy. Considering the amount, you might also consider contacting the local police in your/his town, and the Postal authorities(mail fraud). My sister had one bad ebay transaction. It was only like $12, but she has dedicated her life to putting the person behind bars for it, lol! Good luck, keep us posted. Illegitimus non carborundum!

Do you think I should buy it online? Can you recommend a web site? Should I shop locally at a sporting goods store? I usually buy things online but I'm not sure what's better in this case. If your gonna buy online, check out the links on the main page. When I bought my GPS, amazon was about $5-$10 higher then some of the other online dealers, but I wanted geocaching.com to get the referral commission. The only local store that had the model I wanted was almost $100 more then online. Not to start a debate on what GPS is better, (thats been done plenty of times elsewhere) but if you haven't made up your mind on a GPS yet, I would steer clear of models with a patch antenna. Since you live practically right next door to me, I know the terrain your gonna be using it in, and the patch antenna of the etrex line is really at a disadvantage in the heavy tree cover most of our local caches are in. I'm surely not saying you cant cache here with an etrex, they just tend not to work as well as other models. Stick to the rest of the Garmin line, or any of the Magellans. 14. that this is the seller you are concerned about. If I'm right (and I'm pretty sure I am) The 1st 3 complaints are from the same buyer. I noticed he posted his complaints just 2 weeks after the end of the auctions. Like I mentioned in my previous post, 2 weeks is kinda jumping the gun. There was a reply from the seller, claiming he had in fact been in contact with the seller. Not sure what the outcome is, but I would email that buyer to see how he made out. Now lets look at the 2 neutrals. I'm guessing with these 2 the seller never responded with an address to send payment to, or they would be complaints, not neutrals. Both buyers are experienced ebayers, pretty sure they would have made it a complaint if they were out cach. Even there, the one guy claimed he had waited "almost a week". Gee, that long? Talk about jumping the gun a bit! Next we have the 3 other complaints. 2 of those had their funds returned, so yeah, looks like there is some sort of problem, but they are not out any money either. The 3rd guy is as newbie as it gets. He joined ebay the very day he started bidding on that GPS. Its also the only auction he's bid on since. He was yelling that "I will get this fraud!" just a week and a half after the close of auction. In the 3 yrs I've been ebaying, the only time I got an item that fast was when I was dealing with a large company auctioning off some obsolete stock, I was able to call them via 800 number, and give them CC# over phone. They sent it right out, had it in about a week. Never when I had to mail payment out though. So, it looks like you do have more then a little cause for concern, but so far it looks like theres a good chance you wont be out any money, just wont have that new GPS V for $380. I would start by sending an email to each of those people with the complaint/neutral. Ask them where they stand now, and ask them to keep you informed of what happens, and you will do the same for them. After 30 days, if nothing is resolved, file a claim with ebay. If they pay out, your only gonna get like $175 back, but usually the threatening email they send out to the seller gets the ball rolling if there is still a ball to roll Illegitimus non carborundum!

  16. Good deal, BP! I too always look forward to your assessment of a newly placed cache. Hard to believe you and I started about the same time! I really need to camp out in the back seat of your car for few days. Mopar (ex alto-sax player) Illegitimus non carborundum!

The mail seems to be running a bit slower post 9/11, and just changed the postage rates. Snail mail has been taking up to a week or more for me lately, and I usually drop my outgoing mail off directly at a regional distribution center, which should save a day or 2. So its quite possible the seller only got you check in the last day or 2. Its a very popular time for people to take their vacation, what with many of us getting a 4 day weekend already. The seller may also wait for the check to clear his bank, even though its a bank check, $400 is a large enough sum that he'll want to make sure its not bogus. The seller may only get to the postoffice once a week. Then theres the time to ship it back. All that could easily take 3 weeks or more total, even if the seller isnt on vacation.I have about 50 ebay purchases. I usually wait about 2 weeks and then just send the seller a email asking if he received my payment ok. I would start feeling a bit uneasy if it went another week with no reply. Ebay guidelines state you must wait 30 days from close of auction to file a complaint. I've only had it get to that point once. It was pretty much the exact same situation as yours. Seller had good feedback when I bid, but as the weeks passed, there were starting to get complaints. After 30 days (and not getting any replies to my emails) I filed a complaint. The very next day I got an email from the seller stating she had been in the hospital, and was a few weeks behind (she had dozens of other auctions running at the time I bid) but item would be going out over the weekend. I got it about 9-10 days later. The one thing to remember, if it gets to that 30 day point, start the ball rolling with ebay. Even if the seller contacts you and makes excuses, do not let it go much beyond that. After 60 days from end of auction, ebay will not accept a fraud claim. Illegitimus non carborundum!

  19. quote:Originally posted by MTBguy:I do not really want links to threads about people hunting reguler caches at night, but info about geocaches specificly designed for people to find them at night. How do people make them? What do they use? How long is the trail? How did they identify the cache location? If any of you have hunted a night specific cache (not just a cache at night) please tell me about it. Well, in the night only cache I hunted, the posted waypoint for the cache took you to a small clearing, a fair ways off the trail. Once you reached the waypoint, the cache description instructed you to shine your flashlight in the woods, and figure it out. Doing so, I spotted a cluster made up if bits of relective tape, tacked fairly high up on a tree trunk, maybe 30-50ft away. Being so small, and above normal eye level, its doubtful you could spot them in the dayight, unless you knew exactly where to look. The cluster marked the start of the trail. By shining your flashlight thru the woods, you were able to light up a trail of marked trees, every 25ft or so. the last tree also had a cluster, marking the end of the trail. Cashe was hidden very close by, in a manner consistant with the cache placer's other caches (trying not to give TOO much away here!). If there was any downside to the cache at all, was that there was no reflective tape marking the way back, so if you didnt know how to backtrack your route on the GPS, (or if you just try to bushwack directly back to your car, like I did, heheheh)you might have some problems.
