  1. well, something may have been hard, and I'm pretty sure latex was involved, but I don't think it was his home he was at. You really missed a great cam show in IRC last nite, Red! Illegitimus non carborundum!

  4. I'm not even close to the taste of sour grapes in my mouth! Actually, I was in on it fully as soon as Eric realized that as much as I wanted to believe, I just couldn't. I guess maybe I'm afraid that someone will feel the need to "top" Mitsuko (don't EVEN say it, Majic! ). I also think that the puppets are starting to outnumber the real posters here. I LOVE the good natured kidding and ribbing, and you KNOW I can dish it out as well as take it. Ever notice that Clayjar always stops logging the monday night chats when I get there? I wholeheartily agree all this non-caching conversation and playing around is a Good Thing®, just not inserted into the serious caching threads. Give us an offtopic area to play in Illegitimus non carborundum!

  6. This might also be a good time to again bring up the suggestion of an "off topic" forum. Many of us have found we have alot in common with other cachers besides the desire to hunt down a box in the woods. We like to BS about other things, we like to flirt with members of the opposite sex (/me blows Chobe another kiss!), we like to play jokes on each other. These are not really geocache related at all, but they are things that friends do when they are with other friends. In many cases, our mutual love of tupperware has created lots of very real friendships with other cachers all over the world. An area where friends can just hang out and be friends would be nice. Would also move alot of the non cache related threads to a place where other users wouldnt be forced to wade thru if they didn't want to. OK, I've spent my 2 cents for the day Illegitimus non carborundum!
  7. OK, lemme start by saying I love a good joke as much as the next guy, maybe more (/me blows Chobey a kiss!). It just seems like lately I'm not at all sure what users are real, and who isn't. In the beginning, it was pretty easy to guess that a 0/0 user might not be a totally legit. Lately, the fake accounts have taken to logging finds, so its really hard to tell. As Jeremy has pointed out, he has always had the ability to see the IP address of the posters, making it easy for him to spot people with multiple accounts, but the rest of us don't have that luxury. I have used other web forums where the msg posters IP address is shown to other users. Often the last group of numbers is blanked, such as 138.89.74.xxx . This allows all users to see what ISP and POP location the msg is coming from, without providing enough info to direct DOS or hack attacks at the user. This would be enough info for most users to spot "sockpuppets". It would also discourage trolls, as it becomes fairly easy to lodge a complaint with the offender's ISP. "Trolling" or harassing other net users is usually against the Terms of Service of most ISPs, and many are willing to take appropriate action when notified of a problem user. I'm really not sure how easy it would be to implement into the software, nor would I want it to turn into a witch hunt, but it has worked to clean up other msg forums. Just an idea Illegitimus non carborundum!
  8. Looks like Donald got his start Here. I love these pre-bug travelers, just wish some of them had a better way to track them, even if just a free geocities homepage. I did see one that actually has its own account here. The traveler logs each cache its in. Not sure just how "legit" this is, but surely no worse then a sockpuppet account. This way its easy to follow the traveler on its adventures, as well as contact the owner thru geocaching.com. Maybe an idea for some of the other pre-bug hitchhikers out there Illegitimus non carborundum!

Good luck. I was bored, so I was already trying that. Unfortunately the trail gets very faint before Rusty Da Dog picks it up in WiIlliam Tell cache in Arkansas. Nobody before him mentions dropping it off. I guess you COULD hope it was someone who at least logged online, and back track thru all the previous finders logs, but I just not THAT bored Illegitimus non carborundum!

  11. Is where it originated, according to another log in the cache you found it at. Maybe try posting this question in the "South and SouthEast" forum? Someone might recognize it or the cacher. Maybe even post a msg like "Desperately seeking Duck Owner" or put the email address in the topic. I know there are just so many msgs posted every day, I can't read every single thread. I just scan the topics and see what looks interesting. Illegitimus non carborundum!

It would have been better, how many people do you know from Hohokus? It's a real town. Well, since he was trolling for me, and he really wasnt familiar with NJ, he just picked a zipcode close to my caches. What the puppetmaster didnt know was he picked a small closeknit town, population under 5,000. I used to live there, and still hang in the area, and if someone like Mitsuko lived there, diving the car she said she had, i would have known her already Illegitimus non carborundum!
  13. You know the old saying... It's easier to ask for forgiviness then it is to ask for permission. There are plenty of caches out there in Union County parks (one of mine, included) and I havent heard of any negative reactions, at least. Illegitimus non carborundum!

And yes cosidering how close knit some people here in particuar have come, and how friendly cachers in general seem, an off-topic furum area seems appropriate. BTW the IRC chatroom is often active, and almost ALWAYS off topic (except maybe for those pesky scheduled Monday nite chats) Illegitimus non carborundum!

  23. Logging in (not to be confused with being a charter member) would still be fairly useless to deter intentional plunderers. And yes, even though some have found it hard to believe, there is such a thing. (GeoReplacement Squad springs to mind) There are no checks in place to verify that a users contact info is correct. Someone intent on causing mischief, in the field or the forums, is not likely to post accurate info. Best you could hope for would be a list of IP addresses that viewed a cache page. Big deal, that can be done already without logging in. And what would THAT prove? Nothing. When did the suspected plunderer print out the cache page? 2 hours before he searches for it? Or 2 weeks? When did he even plunder it? It could be a month or more before someone misses it. Besides that, most people still use a dialup internet connection with a dynamic IP address. What if the suspect IP is aol.com? Wow, just narrowed it down to only 12 million suspects! Good work, detective. Zuck brought up another reason, he seems to think that requiring a geocaching account will make them log online. How? Again, the aluminum foil hat crowd will just create a fictious log in, and continue as they did before, only signing the log book. Besides, last time I checked, signing the book was the only requirement for a standard cache. True, I too would like to see my caches logged online so I know there are no problems. But I do also enjoy reading the log books and finding the "hidden" logs. Now, lets send this horse off to the glue factory Illegitimus non carborundum!
