  1.

Thanks for sorting out the photos. We popped up at Easter to pick up but were beaten to it. I must say I'm impressed at how well they came out.

Oops! I visited first some weeks before and saw the camera was full and when I returned to drop off a coin, I thought I'd try and get it developed (I must admit to a bit of trepidation taking it into a shop having NO IDEA what might have been on it). The man in the shop was very nice and apologised that some of them didn't come out - he thought it might have got 'damp' (read the logs, looks like it got soaked!).

I emailed Mr Tinkerbell to tell him and it seems the camera was full a long time ago but he left it there as after the flood thought nothing would come out.

If anyone wants an original or a full size scan, drop me a pm, and I'll try and get it organised.

  2. Similarly, they always say "no mobile phones" - they don't say "no mobile phones, except for those new ones from SonyEricsson which have the 'aircraft' mode on them which disables the transceiver"

Funnily enough the BA pre-flight stewardess speak, does mention these now, but says they still have to be off for take off and landing.

  3. Inspired by this thread, just left my Etrex Vista in the garden to check and sure enough, 33 coming in loud and clear - only 5 other birds locked all with Ds though (not the best place my garden), and a claimed accuracy to 7ft.

The only other time I have got a WASS lock before was on Jersey, certainly didn't see it last week even in a better position.........

  4. Well, petrol isn't a concern for me because a) I have a company car & B ) I don't like using it out of work - it hasn't moved since last Thursday! So my caching is at the moment based on where I happen to be going anyway on trips for work or hols, or 'local' stuff that I can walk or very short drive to.

I've discovered the my stats page, but was wondering what others thought about personal TBs. From a mileage point of view I would look at logging in and out of every cache since I started in order and then continuing after that. The mileage this would acrue would be the same as a real TB - point to point, but in my case might make an interesting map! My first cache was here in Devon, the next was on the Isle of Tiree, 4th was W. Sussex, 5th Guernsey - well you get the picture  (just checked, the second was actually a DNF in Corfu!).

The next step would be a suitable icon. I'm thinking a coin, possibly one 'minted' in June '04 when I logged my first. Hi Ho Hi Ho off to Ebay I go

  5. I was reading last night over on the TB forum about the case for having a personal TB that you just 'dip' into every cache you visit. I'm not sure I'd be too bothered about the actual mileage (i.e. returning to home between trips etc) but it struck me as an interesting idea. As a noob with only 30 or so finds, it wouldn't be too much hassle to go back over my previous finds (in order) to build up a history for my travels.

Does anyone else here use personal TB's? What do you perceive as the advantages and disavantages? Also what would you use: a standard old TB or a 'special' coin?

  6.

If you do want to use it on the plane, don't forget to ask first.

I asked could I use my geko on the plane and the air hostess said "sorry no moble phones" :anibad:

After explaining it wasn't a phone she took it to the captain who said "yes" but to leave it switched off on take off and landing.

I've used mine throughout a flight - including being the first to know that we were being diverted from Bristol to Cardiff and then after the announcement that the divert was cancelled and we were back on for Bristol, and following the map into our landing in Egypt. Some of this paranoia about electronic equipment on planes is just that. Essentially a plane is a big faraday cage (which is why it's ok to be struck by lightening) which is full of noise on the inside anyway, and I would challenge you to even detect (electronically) that a GPSr was switched on from even inches away.

And before you all jump down my throat, PM me and I'll send you the flight numbers I'm on in advance

  7. No one has pointed out that the first aquisition may take a bit longer when you arrive - my Vista sometimes even gets to the bit about are you indoors. This is because it 'looks' for satellites when switched on based on the date and where it thinks they should be - if you have moved a long way since switching off it can get a bit hissy.

BTW I use mine on the plane and bore the missus by telling her which cities we are passing over (you also get some wicked top speed figures in the odo).

  8. Just read this thread for the first time and lost a bet with myself about only needing 23 random peeps to find someone who shares your (my) birthday. Of course if I'd have read the last page first I wouldn;t have had to serach the last three pages

    So April 29th - Glyn

  9. This is a timely thread, I am in the process of setting a couple of caches which I hope will be live for the bank holiday weekend.

Anyway, I know the land is NT so I follow the guidelines onthe GAGB site and contact the relevent warden, who is very amiable and even knows a little bit about geocaching (thinks he read about it sometime), so it seems I have permission. I will be emailing him photos of the locations and offering to walk the sites with him as he seems interested.

However, during the course of our converstaion it seems he is completly in the dark about two other caches 'on his patch': now to be fair, I was speaking to No.2 warden as No.1 is on holiday but he is sure that if one knew they all would. So it might be fair to assume permission was never sought for these. BTW he wasn't unduly bothered, but quite curious.

This got me thinking, because there are two others within a few miles, where I'm pretty certain the land owner would not give permission if asked (a long story of other issues with that estate), so I'm wondering how many of the caches out there - especially the more recent ones which are popping up even faster have got permission? Could it be that someone knows there's one on the patch, assumes permission is granted for that and then further assumes it to be blanket approval for more?

  10. Well, my 'other' hobby is kitesurfing, and estimates on there run to about 10% of kiters actually participate in the main UK forums, with perhaps another 10% 'lurking'.

Now this place is a bit different, because to actually participate in geocaching it's necessary to get online to find and log (although I hear some don't do that) the caches. I suspect the admins could get some sort of idea, by searching for the number of registered UK members of GC.com and the posting stats here. This would not identify the lurkers, but might give you an idea.....

  11. Actually, with the servers acting up recently, there seem to be more errors with TB dropping and retrieving of late, so I always have my fingers crossed that the TB will turn up again somewhere later and it's just an administrative error.

    tell me about it... :ph34r::ph34r:

    sorry boardslider :ph34r::lol:

No Problems, I think I've been quite lucky getting into the site of late and in my eagerness have forgotten how difficutlt it can be especially at weekends

  12. Most dogs we meet are well behaved and do as thier owners ask / command i applaud the people who take time out to train their dogs.

My son is petrified of dogs and phrases like hes only being friendly do not help him a well trained dog however does and indeed these have helped him to overcome his fears.

They are certainly not wild animals now our cat at home could be called a wild animal but she is more likely to run away.

Dog mess in bags in hedges is another matter entirely though :(

Having slogged through this thread, MarkandLynn have summed up my argument exactly: There are a lot of people out there who are frightened of dogs, and they have as much right to be out and about as the next man / woman / child. In law, a person with a dog must be in complete control of it at all times, the calling feebly and making excuses routine just doesn't wash. My friend has an 'unpredictable dog, and when it is out it is NEVER off a short lead, and also muzzled most of the time - he is a responsible owner, anything less is legally actionable. An aquaintance of mine successfully took action against an owner who's out of control dog trashed a kitesurf kite (don't ask -read expensive) on the beach; the owner was uncooperative so they followed him back to the car took the number and called the old bill. That may seem extreme, but if a strange dog attacked or bit me I would stop at nothing to make sure the authorities knew about it.

Oh, and don't even start me on the plastic wrapped poo thing.......

  13. Well, I just completed it with all my spyware tools on paraniod setting, seemed OK. Obviously to hit everyone, this is a survey commissioned by GC as someone said it seems to come direct from their mail server (and they make a fuss about protecting details). The reason it is directed to another domain, is probably that for a survey to be of any use the data must be collected by an 'independent' party; although as someone else pointed out the extra characters on the end of the url, could log your address to your responses.

The only questions I objected to were the income one (given my point above) and the postcode one, which you couldn't not enter and narrows me down to 4 houses.

All that said, anyone who thinks they have any form of anonimity on the interweb should really think again. (just google your name, or something else about you and be prepared to be surprised). For example if the moderators were to look at this post they would know who i work for and if I was at home they would know my real name - just from my ip address (don't think if your isp is 'dynamic' you're in the clear either) and from there find out whatever they want. I just take comfort from the fact that there are so many really 'strange' people out there, no-one is really going to want to take an interest in me ;)

  14. Being a latecomer to the game, I made my first TB last year out of a maglight and left it in a cache in Guernsey with the intent that it would do some EU travels and get back to Devon. After nearly six months without the cache bing found again, its now currently 'oop north' somewhere, never having seen Europe!

Since then: Island Hopper, a frog that wants to stay near water (Currently waiting to start moving from Jersey), 2 minis that are racing the motorway mahem series, and a bear that wants to be photgraphed around the world (that hasn't yet moved).

The problem I see with coins is that they seem inherently collectable, and thus likely to disappear from circulation - I have one, which was part of the giveaway (that's still waiting to move from its first cache too); but bugs have more character, lend themselves to missions and mostly seem to have a longer life in the wild.

  15. I've rarely seen the 'd's on my garmin etrex vista (mono) until the other weekend when I was in Jersey. I wish I'd photo'd it now, I noticed virtually a whole row of 'd's and the reported accuracy said 3ft!

The only time I've seen them was when on holiday in Devon.

Where are you from again ?

Er, Devon :) North mind you.

When I was out at Arrakis yesterday I think it was 33 & 37 were showing but never locking.

  17. I thought I'd resurrect this thread rather than start a new one, because of the last few posts.

Living in the Westcountry - although travelling up and down the M5 / M4 quite often - meant that a lot of these caches are not on my way anywhere so will remain out of reach except on special trips, so I would welcome the idea that it was extended onto trunk roads where there is no motorway i.e. Devon / Cornwall or are there so many other good ones about they are not required? Having just got GSAK to export to Tom Tom I can see how many caches are actually 'quite near' motorways and main roads whilst not actually being cache and dash.

Anyway I got to thinking that I could at least visit them vicariously through TB's and have just released Mini Mayhem 1 & 2 at GCNP4G with the goal of them 'racing' to as many MM caches as they can this summer and then returning to the start point. The only rule is that the only move a max of twice a day - this is to stop someone on a 20 a day habit giving one too much of a head start and to allow as many people as possible a chance to participate.

  18. At risk of getting back on topic...

I've just got back from a trip to the Channel Islands and picked up two coins from caches there (the first I've seen) and they will definitely be going back into caches real soon. I simply can't see the point of hanging on to them, surely it's more fun to track them around the world.

Incidentally one of them was a brand new, unactivated world travel coin left in a cache as part of the Geocoin Giveaway. I have already actiated it and can promise it will be moving soon (TBV8Z5). The other (TBNPA6) is also new, owned by Gribbin and started on its mission last month. After the wonderful caches that Gribbin has set on the island to not keep this moving would not only be a crime, but disrespectful to the owner.

  19. Thanks for all that info.

I know that TT supports the CF GPS, because it's been doing it all along  I didn'e even know I had a problem until I tried to get cachemate to see the GPS, then got sucked down the route of GPSgate because I thought it might fix things and give me some extra functionality.

I don't think the process you describe would add much as the GPS came with no driver software, and I can set up all of the programs to see the virtual port (so eg TT isn't locking the real port).

I think I will have to sleep on this and maybe reawaken the support request on Franson's forum.

  20. Thanks for all the help. I'd kinda figured that the quick download only offers .loc files, just needed it confirmed :P It's also right that a day doesn't seem long, but a; I seem to have goofed by hitting the run the search now button, which has pushed that one down in priority.

The others worked and so I have the 100 nearest home, the 50 nearest my dad's home, plus all (!) my finds, so now I guess I'll get the 10 Jersey ones loaded manually.

Registered Cachemate last night, will do GSAK today :(

    Thanks ;) Just ran it!
