  1. Yup. Sounds just about right. I like to add the step between 2 and 3: realize phone is dying and I have no charger with and after 6, between 7: realize batteries in GPS are dying and spares are in the cache bag, which I forgot in the car
  2. Hhhmmm.... Why do you prefer the codes as opposed to the names? The single click doesn't seem like too much of a hassle, really. But I am curious why you prefer the codes over the name.
  3. They don't run it too bad. A bit heavy on the battery usage, but they will support iOS5. However, I can understand the hesitancy. Hacked? as in, jailbroken?
  4. Search the cache on the iPhone, then click Navigate to cache then click the flag in the upper right. Name the waypoint what you want (corrected coords) and then input the new coordinates in the appropriate fields. When done, click done then tap the new flag on the navigation page, select the arrow and then Set As Target. that should give you a nav path to the new, corrected coordinates
  5. Single best response EVER! You sir, are a stand up individual. You have also restored much faith in mankind for me.
  6. I've placed a replacement container... Found the original container about 100 ft from GZ. Container was broken, lid was missing, contents, log, pencil and TB were scattered through the area. I picked everything back up, put it in the original container, then put that inside a spare that I had, re-hid in the location I believe was right, emailed the CO and informed them of the situation and exactly where I hid it. That is the closest to a throwdown I could ever get. I still do not know if it was the "for sure right thing" to do, as I never heard from the CO, but I have watched the logs and not seen any mention of it being wrong or anything. I just couldn't leave it scattered about or in a no lid container to end up ruined... Meh, whattya do...
  7. Reminds me of jumper blocks on old hardware. ya i know what it is but fear the wrath of the guidelines police. Exact same thought I had!
  8. I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by "ALT-255 (FFh"... hold ALT key down while typing numpad 2-5-5 then let up on ALT key and you'll see the cursor advance That way the name appears just as you like, but the system thinks there is another character typed in. It is only a blank space, but the system thinks there is an actual character in the name. No need for a period or underscore this way. Another option is to use the name you wish and add the ™ after it by using alt-0153 this way Bob appears as Bob™ Simply type the name you like then hold ALT as you type 0153 on the number pad, release ALT key and the ™ appears
  9. Any chance you missed the check box to Enable the cache on that one? If not checked, the reviewer doesn't know about it.
  10. I understand the feeling that logging off/on has for people as far as knowing for certain they are offline and secure and not using data. That said though, it is an un-needed step that only uses more time, battery and system resources than simply leaving/closing the app. The geocaching app works like the safari app, google app, app store app, et al, in that, you are not required to log on/off with them, they are simply online when you call them up and offline when you close the app. Also, double tapping the home button brings up the multi-task bar which allows you to shut off any background running apps if it is battery or resources you are worried about. Personally, I would hate logging in/out every time I cache. It would drive me insane. I much prefer just being able to "instantly" search for caches, navigate to them and log them. The couple of times I have inadvertently logged off the app I have nearly bounced off the walls waiting for it to connect, log me in, find my location, etc... On days of searching 10 or more caches, the time wasted would send me to loony land. Just sayin...
  11. The green "online" indicator is showing, basically, that you are capable of online search and such. You are not using any data with the app if you are not logged in. AFAIK you are only using data when searching with the app and navigating with the map open. This can be rectified by saving maps, via wifi, for offline use. You can also use the SETTINGS > GENERAL > NETWORK > CELLULAR DATA toggle on the iPhone homescreen aka/ Springboard. This sets your phone to wifi only and does not use cellular data at all. Then, while in the field, away from wifi, you can re-enable the cell data for access to logs, internet, etc
  12. While I do not understand why you would want to log off/go offline, it can be done by tapping MENU > CHANGE USER > CLOSE That's all it takes to log off/out
  13. To answer the OP: NO, NO, NO, NO! That being said, my first cache ever, the one that brought this activity to light for me, was actually the final stage of a multi that I seriously stumbled upon. I had never heard of geocaching and was walking through the woods in search of grouse when I literally tripped over an ammo box hidden under a downed tree. I was trying to climb over the tree when my foot caught the cache and made me stumble forward. I opened the cache and found out what it was all about, went home and researched the game and was out caching 3 days later!! Sad thing is that I still never "found" that first cache. I had forgotten the name of the multi and was so excited with my discovery of caching that I never even looked it up. As such, I have never even looked for the other stages of it. No completion of the stages for a multi = no found log (even though I found it without assistance from spoiler sights or anything else)
  14. Here is where the law can get really muddy... Here in Minnesota, a warning sign issued or placed because you know an area or thing is dangerous, can be an admission of guilt. Example; I put out a sign saying "BEWARE OF DOG" then you come on my property and the dog bites you... I can be held responsible and sued because I admitted upfront, with the sign, that I had a dangerous animal So, if we warned a person about each and every danger involved in a cache find, they get hurt somehow by one of the aforementioned dangers, we can be sued for knowingly putting them in danger. The exemption is that we did everything possible to prevent the danger from happening (locked dog up on chain and in the house, Provided the tools and safety equipment and training to use them right, etc) While it is rare that someone can and will sue in a situation like this, it is legally acceptable and there truly is little one can do to prevent it. The system is skewed, which is a shame. Thankfully Most cachers are an honest bunch and would be hard pressed to even think of suing another cacher because they got an owie doing something they love.
  15. Personally, I will never set foot inside another REI. I had gone in to purchase boots and possibly caching supplies and, I had hoped, a roll of camo tape. It was about all I could do to get anyone to ask if I needed help, which is odd... I am 6'1" tall, 225lb, shaved head and covered in tattoos, 99% of all stores are clamoring to get a person near me to make sure I am not stealing thing, but REI just ignored me. 3rd person I said "excuse me" to finally asked if there was something I need. When I said I was hoping they had camo tape somewhere, the staff member looked me in the eye and said, "No, we don't cater to the Hook and Bullet crowd. We used to, but it isn't really worth it" Being an avid fisherman and hunter I was stunned. The hook and bullet crowd? Seriously? I put back the items I had in hand and quietly walked out of the store. That was 45 minutes of my life that I will never get back... I am not one who gets offended easily, nor do I buy into the PC concept, but dang, that was just ridiculous! SO there will be no REI shopping, nor items, in my future.
  16. I agree with all of the above. While it would be an absolutely fantastic feature, the battery drain now is horrendous and would only worsen with a feature like this. Shame, really... Great idea but not until the battery drain issues are sorted out
  17. An idea for you JeepFreak, A tattoo of a Jeep front end, grill, etc, with the license plate having the TB code on it instead of regular plate numbers
  18. 1997 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport 5 speed manual transmission with 215,000 miles on it. Silly thing is just incredible. It is also a TB. 33 mpg on the highway and it'll go through mud and snow, up hills and over rocks like a champ. Sure, it isn't as brutal an off-road machine as my 98 Jeep with 6" lift, Dana super 60 front and rear end, Detroit lockers and 42" MTR's, but it gets me where I need to be for substantially less CHING!
  19. The entire situation seems like a misunderstanding, to a certain degree. It appears as though you were doing what you deemed "the right thing" and it was poorly reported. Miscommunication happens, poor reporting happens, and life goes on. We all have our own idea of what is acceptable, funny, scary, etc... That's what keeps life interesting. IMO Now, a statement like yours, quoted above, leaves little room for misunderstanding. While I think you are probably a very nice young lady, attractive, educated, well intentioned and pursuing a noble career, you can not truly believe that you know everything about children. I have degrees in metallurgy, machine tool technology and mechanical engineering and have been working as a machinist and cnc programmer for 20+ years, but I don't know everything about machining, metal or engineering. I also have 3 kids, 2 are grown and had 4.0 GPA's through high school, maintained 3.6 and higher GPA's through college and are both in the military now. My youngest is a straight A student and in 5th grade. None of them have been in trouble with the law, nor had any real issues of any sort. They are all good kids who did what we all hope kids will do while growing up. I think that suffices as proof that I was a decent parent. But it wouldn't mean that I know everything about kids. It just means that I know enough to have been able to help guide them. I am sure you know a-lot about children, and will do fine in life, but to claim you know everything about children is disingenuous and, quite honestly, impossible. As I stated previously, you are an attractive young lady, but your lack of humility makes you appear less so. Just something to think about...
  20. Longest Slump: 627 consecutive days without a find from 09/14/2009 to 06/03/2011 Second Longest Slump: 335 consecutive days without a find from 10/17/2008 to 09/12/2009 2 failed marriages and a 2 year hitch in the oilfields limited my ability and desire to go caching. I will not let that happen again!! (famous last words)
  21. Sweet!!! I hadn't even thought of that... You guys, and gals, are the best!! I don't have plans to place very many, maybe only a total of 5, since I want to be able to maintain properly, but that will help a whole lot!
