  1. We agree please don't delete the # of watchers. Its nice to know.
  2. Short answer NEVER!!! Long answer, on the first try it depends on several factors. Plus a DNF gets logged. On the second try it also depends on several factors. Plus a second DNF gets logged. Hey we're not proud . We will only ask for a hint when we feel a third trip would be wasted or we've searched for a combined 2 hours. DNF's and repeated drives to an area mean nothing to us, just another fun challenge an a way to spend quality time together. We can't understand the logs where someone writes found it after 3,4, or even 5 tries and that is thier only log! DNF's can be as enjoyable to read as a found it note.
  3. Yes, all the caches in our area have seen several new hits in the days since Christmas. It's also great that one of our caches seems to be the one that most of the new people pick as their very first. When we started in June of '04 we had a goal to double the caches in our county (3 at the time). That being done we want to triple that, and with an influx of new cachers we hope that will create new caches. Thank you Santa!
  4. We take our 4 year old grandson quite a bit, and even though there is a great debate about Mctoys, he'll grab one whenever he can. Also stickers, armymen, (the ones with parachutes are the greatest) cars, bouncyballs, polished stones, keychains, golfballs, temp. tattoos, dinosuars, almost anything. Thanks for thinking of the kids. We always carry both types of swag adult/children. And we stock our caches with swag for all. This is truly a family hobby and with the exception of absolute junk just about anything can be a good trade item. Also a cool TB will catch his fancy every time. We even bring them home when he isn't with us so he can see them and play with them as some are intended, Then we put them back into his or one of his cousins caches and we update him when they move on.
  5. sometimes a weapon COULD come in handy, depends on where you live. see log below. July 10 by driven1 (26 found) One to tell the Grandkids! (If we ever have any.) This one turned out to be more of an adventure than we expected. We finally reached the area we were going to set up camp at around 5:30 and by 6:30 we were ready to head off to the cache. Was kind of in the back of my head that we should wait til Sunday because it was getting a little late but from where we set up camp the cache was about 0.8 of a mile away so we figured we could do it. We didn't take the recommended route. Blazed our own trail! Perhaps a bit of a mistake but the hiking really wan't all that bad and we made it to the Cache around 8:00. Around 8:30 I told Driven2 that we had to get going or we'd run out of daylight getting back, so off we went. We DID run out of daylight and it was a Moonless night. No matter, we had our brand new flashlights from a local cheapy store. So my wife turned hers on (she has poor night vision) and we kept on going. About 20 minutes later the bulb in her flashlight blows. No biggie, I've got mine, so I turn it on and we continue on. Ten minutes later the bulb in that one goes! So now we're left with a couple of decisions. I could mark her spot on our GPS, leave her there and go find Camp and get the good flashlight and come back and get her. Or we could build a fire (which was going to have to be done in either case) and we could both stay there till daybreak. It wasn't a matter of flipping a coin, as I was zeroing in on our location the batteries in the GPS died! So I grabbed one of our cheapie flashlights and popped the batteries from it into the GPS. Wouldn't you know it, not only did the flashlights' bulbs suck, so did its batteries. Not enough juice to run the GPS. Tried the other set. Same thing! Last chance was our Digital Camera. Tried the batteries from that. Got semi-lucky. They would fire up the GPS but there was about half a charge left. I decided it was best to save that for the morning. So we spent the night where we were. We gathered up some firewood and got a fire going and decided to take turns sleeping by the fire to keep it going. I let my wife sleep a bit (although she was having a hard time) til 2:30 am and then it was going to be my turn. I couldn't sleep either. It wasn't all that cold or anything, was actually a very nice night, but it was a bit on the damp side. Suddenly there was a flurry of barking and howling. A pack of Coyotes! Sounded like there were about 8 to 10 of them. There was a "Scout" to the North of us and the rest of the pack was to the East. They werent too far off either. Couldn't have been more that 4 or 500 feet. Just out of the fire's illumination range. I stood up and the second I did they stopped howling. We were being watched! I knew now that we absolutely had to keep the fire going. Most of the wood that I found was rotten and/or damp or a type of wood that doesn't burn paticularly well. We had a pellet pistol with us and were using Ski Poles with sharp metal tips for hiking and also had a couple of camping knives with us as weaponry. Needless to say, from that point on neither of us slept. We kept the fire going all night and then at daybreak we headed out through the brush towards camp. Earlier, when it was dark and we were exploring the possibility of heading to camp instead of staying, we kept running into thickets of trees and couldn't find a way through where we were at. As soon as morning broke I noticed that there was a small clearing on the other side of some trees NW of our location. I turned on the GPS and we headed for that. About 7 minutes later we were back at camp. So close, yet so far away! We had a much needed celebratory cigarette, a drink of water, and then we crawled into the tent, peeled our wet clothes off, and snuggled into our nice warm sleeping bags and slept till noon. Ah, GeoCaching! Ya gotta love it! Thanks for the hide (and the experience)! Driven 2 took the Jeep TB and we left a Camping multi-knife.
  6. Congrats!! We just got #100 yesterday. Oh, and BTW don't grow up til your ready(too much responsibility)
  7. http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.as...5b-4ced31081539 We brought these 2 together, but you should see our house before we got them separated.
  8. We log all our DNF's. There is no shame in a DNF, unless of course you get some sort of complex from it. Besides it adds character.
  9. wvhunter, did you get yours straightened out yet? Here's what we did, we punched in the tracking # located the last entered cache, and retreived it from that cache. Then we placed them into Norwich cache. And finally we retreived them out of norwich cache. We did it this way figuring that the miles would be correct and the history would be accurate, with the exception that we "really" didn't retreive them from the last known cache. Not sure if we should have done it another way or not, but we just wanted to get the little "orphans" fixed and moving again. And thanks to you for initiating the rescue!! Also did you see the post and link that the owner of norwich left? if not it's worth a look.
  10. Ok, we logged them out of the caches they were showing in, logged them into the cache they were dumped in, and logged them back out. Thanks.
  11. Sorry this is gonna be a long one. On July 10th we placed a TB in a cache not far from our house, and put it on our watch list. On 10/1 it was retreived and we read the log notification and the person said their was 19 TB's in this cache!!! and only the one we placed was showing. This kind person took 5 others to help them on their way. We stopped by the cache on Friday (10/8) to see if we too could help and we took 7 with us. Well after numerous discussions over the next day and a half we knew we had to rescue the other 6, (their kinda like orphans) so we stopped and picked them up tonight on our way home. The log book was dated from 9/28 from geobandits stating they took several TB's hostage from Maryland, NewJersey, and Pa. and they were dropping them in this cache. Initially we thought maybe they were new and didn't know the procedure for TB's. But we searched the name and their profile showed member since 9/17/01, status showed not validated member, and last visit was never. So now we think they knew what they were doing and used a made up name, as they didn't log their visit on the cache page. We will contact all the owners, but what is the best way to "fix" them? Should they be logged out of the last known cache they were in and be logged in this cache we took them from? If so who should do it the owners or us? We're not stat seekers and we don't want credit for finding them in the last known cache and placing them into this one if we really didn't do it. But we will take credit for moving them from the "dump" cache into new ones. Any help/advice would be greatly appriciated.
  12. Yeah, I thought it would be ok, just needed to hear it from others I guess. We live in a small rural county that only has 5 caches in it. Soon to be 6 just waiting for the ok from DCNR. We bought into the whole caching experience pretty hard, and we are taking every step to see that it grows and prospers, and we were thinking by moving bugs into the local caches (not only ours but everybodys) we can draw more people to our area. There is whole lot more in our neck of the woods than just caching. And we think others would enjoy it if they come. By the way we have 3 more in the works, one for each of our 5 grandkids. 1 actively caches with us and has a cache named after him. The other 4 don't know it yet but when they get older the cache named after them will be their responsibility to maintain, With our help of course.
  13. Now that we have our own cache is it ok to put travel bugs in there that we find as long as it helps with the goal? This is to get people to our cache. Or should we move them along to other caches? Would this be considered "rude" or "improper"? We have 1 of our own I'm going to place in our cache tonight, and when that one gets moving we were wondering if we could place others there as well.
  14. Another addict!! Sounds like us when we first started. Just remember above all else, HAVE FUN!!!!
  15. Well as an EMT I'm not going on a rant when I find something in a cache that can possibly injure some one. Nor will I come to the forums and flame someone because they put a cache on a rocky hillside that is very steep and could cause injury. Nor will I cause discontent when someone places a cache in the woods where rattlesnakes, bears , and other animals can potentially cause someone to become a patient. Oh, and as an EMT that takes his 4 year old grandson geocaching I don't disallow him to take the little plasic toy from the cache that he may fall on and injure himself with. If i felt that strong about it I would trade it out and let it be. In other words quit seeing possible fire scenerios with everything you encounter. Geocaching should be fun!! leave the job at the firehouse. I choose not to see potential patients in everything I encounter. If I did I think life would start to suck! Relax man and cache on. K

  18. How do i up load a image into my log Thanks
  19. We have relatives in Bowling Green and I lived there for a bit and worked at the Kash N Karry when it first opened. My Aunt sent up some news papers and I see KNK survived as did you! Stay positive and when things get to be a little much get out there and Geocache, or you could have a worse problems on your hands like geowithdrawel. Hope all goes well and happy hunting.
  20. We watch just to see who, what, where, when, and to see what the "locals" are up too. It's also interesting to see if others enjoyed or had similar experiences as ours. It's also kind of a way to get to know fellow cachers, before you meet them.
  21. Thanks, some very good ideas. Especially liked the ones about putting good stuff in for all to get something special.
  22. What would be a good first to find prize? We want to place our first cache and we would like to do it "right". Thanks
