  1. I was thinking about placing a MOC because we've had a good share of caches get looted in my area. But I don't want to eliminate anyone either...so I was trying to think of a way to list the cache as a MOC, but I would email non-members the cache details if they asked for them. The problem would come with logging the find. Any ideas? -pizzachef
  2. the distance stays in miles..i.e. .01 miles is as close as you can get. With the eTrex and 315, it'll display feet. How's about we try to keep this in the GPS Units thread. -pizzachef

The Magellan 315 is VERY MUCH worth the 50 bucks extra for the features that you get over the 310 AND the eTrex. I'd definitely recommend that one, but you question was between the 310 and the eTrex. Between those two, fo with the eTrex, but if you've got $150 to spend..go with the 315. -pizzachef
  4. for about three weeks. It was actually a Blazer 12, which is a 310 without the data link. It worked well, but was sometimes slow locking on. But it is a 12 channel reciever just like all of the expensive ones. I now have a 320 which has tons more features that I am very happy with. Anyway, to answer your question: I would get the eTrex. Mainly for the display. I know those young-uns have good eyes and have no trouble seeing the displays, but the 310's display is similar to a digital watch's display, and the eTrex's is like a palm pilot (okay, maybe not THAT nice, but it blows away the 310). It also can hold more than just 1 route, I believe, and more waypoints. But the eTrex is definitely worth the 20 bucks extra...heck, look around on the internet and you can probably get it for cheaper than the 310. And it's more user-friendly and looks more high-tech. Which also makes the young-uns happy -pizzachef

  7. Well you're in luck, because the geocachers around here love an excuse to get together and do what they do best. I'm sure by Halloween someone will put together a gathering and we can all have a scary bash. Also, there's a few caches popping up along I-49, and you can stop in Shreveport, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Alexandria, and probably some others that I'm forgetting on the way down. Keep your eyes peeled; someone will come up with something. -pizzachef

  9. I think I know what two caches Clayjar was talking about way back when....and I think I know the Backroads Jenkinson that hid them too So is this discussino still active then??? What's the statute of limitations on these threads? I like the cemetary hides when there's something neat about the cemetary. I think those graveyards in question weren't just picked at random; they fit the "themes" of those multi-caches that they were parts of. (Is that a dangling something at the end of that sentance?) I've been to a few graveyard cache sites, and most have been respectfully placed. And they were in interesting areas. -pizzachef

  11. I made a night-time cache in a spot that had a really good view of the night sky. I bought two big washers (maybe 1 inch dia.), some metal wire, and reflective tape from the automotive section of wal-mart. I just put the tape on the washers and tied the washers to a tree. They're cheap (I used maybe 3 inches of the 10 feet of tape) and they've been up there for a year, and REALLY reflective. The thing is, they're kind of visible during the day, and people might tamper with it if it's in a high-traffic area. The cache is just off in the woods about 100 feet...no specific trail to it, hidden under a bush. VERY findable with a flashlight, but noone's gonna stumble across it. Good luck..let us know how it works out! -pizzachef
  12. I have a Magellan 320, it's just like a 315 but with Nautical Navaids. The 315/320 doesn't have mapping capability, so my question is: Is there any mapping software that I can use with my gps? I'd like to be able to use a laptop in a car and see where I am, and also be able to transfer routes made on a map on the computer to the gps. I've tried using Magellan's Mapsend TOPO CD that goes with the MAP 330 and Meridian series, but it didn't recognize the 320. Anyone know of anything else? Maybe something shareware even? Thanks. -pizzachef
  13. The post-it note looking thing is just that: a note. It's not "found" or "not found" log, just a note that you posted to the cache log. If you did indeed find it, then go to the cache page and press 'edit' next to your note, and change it to "found". EASY PEAZY...! -pizzachef
  14. I agree with you completely..but I don't think that would fly with Alex Trebek. -pizzachef

  17. Well, I'm glad so many people have had positive experiences with GPS's on planes...I thought maybe there'd be more negative comments. Thanks everyone! And I HAVE been reading the forums a while, so I've been across the old threads about this subject, but I was looking for some fresh info. COOL, so my gps is coming with me on my next flight then. Happy Caching... -pizzachef

  19. Has anyone recently brought their gps on a commercial airline flight? Should you ask permission? Do the security bag-checkers give you flack? Do the people sitting next to you flip out and start attacking you with magazines and steaming-hot coffee? I'd like to look at mine on the plane to see the speed and elevation and stuff, but I was wondering if some airlines were different than others about things like that. -pizzachef

  23. It'd take me 15 minutes to type in the dadgum web address on that little keypad. Otherwise it's a neat idea. You sure are limiting it to select few people though...most people probably don't even know how to use the web on their phone...although, I think if you can figure out how to use a gps, you can learn to use the minibrowser on your phone. I was thinking of something similar, it just wouldn't be time-limited...where the initial waypoints are published, then you have to answer a question (maybe historical) about your surroundings, and pick the answer from a list on the cache description. Each answer has coords next to it. I was thinking four legs and like 15-20 answers to pick from?? Most would be bogus and might drive people up the wall if they got the wrong answer, but that's what 5 star difficulty is for!! -pizzachef

  25. I wouldn't waste money on Nikes if you're planning on actually going into the outdoors with them. They're god awful expensive just for that silly little check mark, swoosh thing. Try out www.rei-outlet.com and see what's on clearance in the women's shoes area. Or check in a local outdoor store, there's usually always some kind of sale on shoes nowadays. You don't need serious hking boots, but a pair of those on/off trail shoes/boots would be good...and they're usually waterproof(able). Hehe..I can't say just one word can I? Anyway, I go from wearing just Birks to white shrimp boots depending on what I'm walking through...but you might not have the swamps like we have down here in the bayou state. But mostly I wear hiking shoes. They're like soft boots...or stiffer shoes. -pizzachef
