  1. Check the yahoo group called "Magellan Meridian"

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Magellan_Meridian/

Look in the files section for the FAQ...it tells you which utility to use and where to get it.

I've found that with the new firmware version...4.02 is the latest I have...it doesn't let you change the center text..it used to in previous versions of the firmware. Oh well..someone will come up with somehting to fix that I guess.

  2. The meridian comes with a data cable..but to really get the most use out of it, you should get a cardreader to put the maps on teh SD card. It's much faster. As for a comparison between the two, I don't believe the Geko even comes close to the Meridian. It seems to me that the Geko is trying to appeal to those looking for a toy, while the Meridian is much more of a tool...and a steal at 110 bucks.

  3. Anyone have any experience with a usb port replicator? Maybe the Targus PA090 in particular? I've got a Toshiba laptop with no serial port and no PS/2 port. I've got a serial-usb adapter, but I have to keep switching between the gps and the Palm. The port replicator would give me an additional serial port and 2 PS/2 ports...along with 2 usb, a parallel, and an RS-232 ethernet port.

Sounds like a good thing...but I've read about some problems with drivers for the serial and parallel ports. anyone have anything good or bad to say baout this model? or a similar one even?

    thanks

  5. Anyone have any experience with a usb port replicator? Maybe with the Targus PA090 in particular? I have a Toshiba laptop with no serial port. So i have a usb-serial adapter. But I've got the gps and a Palm so I have to keep switching the two cables. I also only have 1 PS/2 port on the computer...the replicator has 2 of those and a serial port (along with a parallel, 2 usb's and an RS-232 ethernet port)

It sounds like a good thing, but I've read about some driver problems and was just wondering if anyone had any good or bad things to say about this model? or similar models even?

    Thanks a bunch

Well, Magellan has removed the gps 300 information page from their website. I'm pretty sure the 300 is a re-named Pioneer (2 channel reciever) and the 310 is a renamed Blazer12 (12 channels) with the addition of a data port. I thought the 300 had a data port, but i guess i'm wrong there. Either way, the 300 will work for caching, but a newer one will be nicer and more accurate

  7. You don't really load them directly onto the gps. Don't connect the gps when you go to load them. It'll start working...when you get an error message, press cancel and look in the mapsend program directory on your hard drive for the filename "detail01"

i forgot the extension...might be .img

anyway, rename that file to whatever you want, if it;s a map of louisiana, name it LA.img or whatever.

then do another region...when you get all you want, put them on the sd card with a cardreader.

put the card in the gps and press menu, go down to card utilities and load the map you want

you can only have one map loaded at once...

this process is much better explained elsewhere..do a search

    good luck

    ps..

it's just my opinion, but i think smaller files work better. it's less work that the gps has to do when your panning the map around

i've got a map of louisiana that's 17 megs. arkansas and mississippi are about 15 each.

if you're planning on travelling a long way then it may be worth it to you to have one big map, but i like smaller ones for just caching around town

  8. Actually there is one more difference which is minor but could be a pain if you're not careful.

    It's best explained here:

    http://gpsinformation.net/mgoldreview/meridiandalaloss.htm

basically, you just have to make sure not to let the batteries run dry or you might lose you waypoint data that you've entered since your last power-off

But in my opinion, you'd still buy the card and map cd whether you got a base meridian or a gold..or the plat for that matter

i got a yellow meridian and i'm very happy with it.

  9. Don't waste your money on a Pocket PC...windows belongs on a full fledged computer (arguable even then icon_wink.gif)...palmOS belongs in your pocket

i'm very happy with my handspring visor...but i do have a cheap palm IIIe dedicated to geocaching..just in case i take a spill, i'd like my good pda to survive

  10. The 300 only has 2 channels with which to recieve sattelite signals...the 310, 315, and newer models are 12 channel recievers.

I had a Pioneer (a 300 without the data port) and found a few caches with it...but I agree about the 315. It's a really good gps.

    good luck

oh yea..there's another topic area here called "GPS Units and Software", try loking in there and see what people have had to say.

  11. Hmm...I think my largest file is around 20 megs, so you've got me beat icon_biggrin.gif

I have three files totaling i think 47 mb, and it really didnt take my computer very long to generate the files. i haven't tried a REALLY big one yet, but i've heard that the file-size/computer-time relationship is not linear. seems it takes a lot longer to make a big files than to make two smallers ones...am i wrong?

    -pizzachef

  12. 103 mb is an awfully big file...I've been trying to stick with files around 20 megs. I've got map files for 3 different states on the card and just load the state that I happen to be in.

I don't have my gps in front of me, but when I get ome, I'll try turning the detail map off and back on and see what it tells me.

    Good luck...
