  1. Remember what the guidelines are for -- to make sure cachers don't stumble upon another cache in the area while searching for one! Often times the reviewers will take into account geographical boundaries that would naturally prevent some one from stumbling upon another cacher nearby. Believe me --- there is no way you could mistake these two caches!!!! If you did, you might take a mighty tumble and you better know how to swim!!!
  2. You may want to try posting again to www.mtgc.org. I may have saw your post in February but at that point June seemed so far away I had no idea what was planned for me that week so I didn't want to commit to anything! I think a lot of others may have felt the same way! NashvilleJoe and Abbysgrammy are retired so they would be great guides for the daytime. Most of the other local cachers still need to work for a living so if you are still looking for afternoon or evening runs -- post again.
  3. Most of the middle TN cachers are just now recovering from our recent trip to GW3 so that's why you have not had many responses. You may also want to post to www.mtgc.org.
  4. Congratulations!!!! I had so much fun rooming with you during GW3 and caching with you during those three days! I'll always treasure the memories of you and others during GW2 at "Blue"! As well as the entire time of GW3!! You are a special person and I wish you many more finds!
  5. I too would like to offer thanks to NEFGA for a fantastic event!! I was a little under the weather for most of it but once again (just like GW2) had an absolute blast the entire weekend! I also want to thank some people which to my knowledge have not been thanked thus far -- the spouses/signifincant others and families of those involved!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! You played a large role in this event whether you were recruited to help or just provided moral support. This event was a huge undertaking and required many hours of preparation before the event event began. I was only able to meet some of you durning GW3 and the Number Ho event and it was an extreme pleasure to meet those that I did! So thank you NEFGA members for hosting a wonderfull event and thanks to their support system that allowed them to pull this off in such a spectacular manner! LSUMonica aka Monica Summers Nashville TN
  6. I realize that Jeremy stated he is working on it but I would just like to chime it that I would LOVE having the ability to store more than 20 PQs. Once again, like the original poster I would like to SAVE them and only run them as needed. Why is this important to me? I live in Nashville, TN, have a brother in Dallas, TX, a sister in Houston, TX and my mother lives in Louisiana. 3 of these 4 places are cache dense areas and need more than at least 2 queries to cover EACH of the areas. (I need 6 alone to cover the areas within a 3 hour drive of my house!) Plus, since I can't fly from Nashville to Dallas on Southwest airlines I frequently fly into OKC and drive down, caching along the way so add another PQ or 2 to cover that area. I travel a lot!! Two weeks ago, in a single weekend found caches in North Dallas, South Dallas, Huntsville, Conroe, Tomball and Houston TX plus Nashville TN. (and yes, I own 2 GPSs precisely to hold multiple map area and caches -- internet or computer access on trips is not always possible). Once I perfect the queries that cover an area I frequently travel to, I would like to be able to save these and only run when neccessary. Right now, I have to remember to print the PQ page settings before deleting a PQ (to create a new area) so that when I need it again I remember what the settings should be. Thanks for your consideration!
  7. How about geocaching banners or flags? When you go to events in public places (especially in new areas) it is sometimes difficult to know who the geocaching group is -- unless they are wearing T-shirts. A banner or flag with the geocaching logo would be great to put up. Or perhaps one of those car flags that you see supporting your local pro teams. I had an event where everyone met in a crowded parking lot. A lot of new cachers I had never met before were going to attend. There was no way to give them an EXACT waypoint to meet as I had no idea where we would be able to park outside of the large stadium on the event day. I sewed a homemade white flag with four blocks of color similar to the gc logo and hung on my car to help try to identify the meeting place.
  8. There is a movie about locating a hydrocache in the swamps on Louisiana Geocaching. It is on the home page. Here is the info: Geocaching Video Logs... Posted by alexm on Sunday, 17 October 2004 (15:09:54) CDT (223 reads) Destined to be the next level in geocache logging, we are proud to present Geocaching Video Logs. What's that, you might ask? Well.. my wife, Katie, brought her digital video camera along on our latest geocaching adventure to the Bayou Pierre Part hydrocache by Buck8Point and LaAnthropology. Little did I know while she was shooting the video that it would be her lifelong dream to publish it on the internet. So here it is. Check it out using any of the links below. There's some really nice scenery in there as well as documentary of standard geocaching antics. 340kps for broadband 150Kbps medium quality 38Kbps for dial-up (yuck!)
  9. YES!!!! Thanks to all for the improvements. I sat down to log my caches tonight and completely forgot it was Sunday until I was in the middle of logging. I actually had to check my Outlook calendar to make sure this was really Sunday as I could actually post logs without timing out! Woo Hoo!! PS. the only timeouts were occasionally for locating nearest caches.
  10. Also, by the way the reason I did not post a reply sooner was that I was out caching with friends on Saturday -- not reading or posting in the forums. And yes, for those that debate numbers we did almost 50 in one day in rural TN yesterday. (hint: you start EARLY in the morning and END late at night). Hope you all have as much fun caching today as I did yesterday!
  11. Wooo I made it in the Geocaching world!!! One of my caches is being argued in the forums!!! To set the record straight on some of the issues... The original camera shot Beale Street Blues was placed in October 2004. I was actually surprised that no one that lived in Memphis had placed a cache using this camera. So when I was on one of my visits to Memphis (I NOW live just west of Nashville but I was travelling there from Louisiana before) I grabbed the coordinates of this came and followed the rules for submission. At that time I noticed that another webcam cache could be made from the shot about .1 miles down the road. I did NOT submit that webcam cache from that shot as I thought that others should have the opportunity to have a webcam cache as well. I heard through the grapevine (so this may or not be true but JamieZ did also allude to it in his log of this cache) that many of the locals boycotted this cache because it was submitted by an "out-of-towner". And 90% of the logs on this cache have been summitted by those that live outside of Memphis proper. Now 6 months later, no local cacher had claimed a cache on the only other shot on the webcam that provided the detail outlined in the cache submission guidelines -- yes, I do read them -- so when friends were in Memphis caching for the weekend and called me to take there picture I personally was the one who told them about the potential for another webcacm down the street. The cache owner of the new cache This Bud's for You took the new coordinates properly and I grabbed a picture for submission to the cache reviewer. It is with my okay that the cacher copied the wording from my cache page. He actually even improved upon it with his spacing. If ANY cache is submitted within the guidelines, and the reviewer sees that it met the guidelines, I see no reason not to approve it. So now to clarify some issues above that I know will be questioned... I was and am visiting Memphis often to visit a 94 year old family friend from Louisiana who is in an extended care home here. Now before you start questioning why would someone who lived in Louisiana be here -- she is here because she has no children, no living sisters or brothers, and her niece who is fairly famous in Memphis lives there. So when I visit her, I normally am doing just that and not caching -- so don't look for logs on caches proving I was there. As a result of my cache placement and because I visit and like Memphis, I support the local geocaching club. I am a "founding member" of the Geocachers of West Tennessee and support the organization on my web page -- just as I do for the local groups on my caches in Nashville and Louisiana. I plan on actively participating but the intial club meeting conflicted with a previous non-caching commitment. You will also note I support the club in their local forums. Sincerely, LSUMonica
  12. Try this page for a list of locationless caches and some tools to manage them... Locationless caches I like using LocLess2Loc. It is easy and I can create a .loc file to load into MapPoint.
  13. I have this one on my watch list. Actually "attempted" this one a while back -- found the private road that led much closer to the cache site even! Problem is that this is a LONG hike and I wasn't fit enough at the time nor did I really budget enough time to do the cache. I am definately going to try this one when there is more daylight available. Don't give up hope yet!!
  14. Steve -- You are correct I could delete those ACTIVE caches not updated in my last PQs and that would take care of some items that were actually archived but then I might lose caches that are not visited very frequently. Unfortunately, I run weekly PQs on several of the areas outside of Nashville where I cache -- South Louisiana, Dallas and Houston -- and have family. I take advantage of a lot of last minute airline specials so I run PQs for those places each week in case this is the weekend I am there. Problem is that some of these caches -- especially those in Louisiana -- are not visited every week and therefore not updated. In those cases I would lose the "historical" logs. Also, as caderoux stated if you delete all archived caches you would lose your found counts. Alas there is no perfect system and probably never will be... Monica On a personal note, I saw some recent logs by you so I take it you are out and about caching again? Hope to see you on the trails!
  15. One last FYI, if your PQs include inactive caches, i.e. check next to "IS NOT ACTIVE", then GSAK will change the cache to inactive in the database. I absolutely LOVE IT when a cache owner changes a cache to "unavailable" for a period of time (a week works great if I run my usual pocket queries once a week) THEN archives the cache!!! This works great!! My weekly PQs get the "unavailable" update so then I do not load them into my GPSr! Then every few months when I do "database maintenance" I take a look at my unavailable but not archived queries that have not been updated in a while. Most of the time these have been archived so I toggle the switch in GSAK to archived.
  16. I think the problem is not filtering out the archived caches when loading into your GPSr but getting information that a cache HAS been archived INTO GSAK. That's where I am struggling. Right now, every few weeks I sort my caches by the date last updated. I start clicking on the oldest one and most of the time I find that they have been archived. This is the only way I know how right now. I know that there has been some discussion that some people are afraid that others might hunt archived caches -- especially those in parks. But the issue for some of us is simply a notification that a cache was archived should be available in pocket queries.
  17. Dollar Tree also sells an assortment of sizes in a package for $1.
  18. I'll be going to Gatlinburg next weekend so I appreciate all of the responses to this post. I may venture over to Asheville NC so if anyone has any ideas there, it would be appreciated.
  19. Lets see, I like -- Maps - I normally buy or get one free for every state and major city I visit. I recently cleaned out my maps when I got a new car but still have at least 6 state maps and 3 city maps in the car and moved the rest inside. History - My family would refuse to stop at another historical marker on vacation after a while. Cemetaries - I love looking at the gravestones and imagining the life of the person. Puzzles - I LOVE logic puzzles and have books on puzzles! Tech Toys -- what can I say, I am a girl geek, I own 2 desktop PCs, 2 Laptops, 2 PDAs, 2 zip drives, a cross tablet, AND 2 GPSrs. Getting "Lost" - I wonder where this road leads... Outdoors - I was a pre-med/zoology major in college and even took herpetology (that snakes, salamanders and frogs) and does anyone wonder why I like geocaching so much!!!
  20. Sorry, Joe Frog, I didn't have a name to your site and the link I have is directly to the pdf file. I did try "backing" into the site to give credit but your cache page simply had a "updating" note and no information. The credit is yours for creating it!!
  21. I have a bunch of sites bookmarked. I'll post as many as you want... Texas Geocaching Association Document Page rsgeek page The others are bookmarked on my desktop computer so give me a few minutes to switch to that one.
  22. Thanks so much!!! I think the cache owner is fairly new too so I am sure he appreciates the information about how to change it. I'll try emailing him with the info. I'm working on improving my scores for next year!!!!
  23. Can an approver change a cache TYPE? There is a cache in my hometown:GCKAA6 T-Town Possie. which is listed as a multi but is really a traditional cache. The owner even states that he made a mistake in the cache listing. I know the owner is currently in Iraq (communication through email before he lefte) so I am not sure if he is reading his email. I am watching both of his caches in my hometown as a courtesy while he is deployed as my mom could check on them if they need maintenance.
  24. Bear with me on this I am still learning about benchmarks and what consistutes a benchmark other than a disk... Question -- For AU3197 and AU3196, the datasheet doesn't say anything about "intersection" so I assumed the marker was the domes themselves. So what I am I assuming incorrectly? PS. I just posted the picture because it was pretty and I was proud of it! Went visit my hometown this weekend and with only two geocaches nearby I looked mostly for benchmarks but having trouble with identifying those other than a disk.
