  6. Same here. Tried last night after 7 days and did not work. Tried this morning and did not work.
  7. LSUMonica

    PQ problem

Same here too! Only 1 rather than 5 ran and it was really early this morning.
  8. I take it you are using Geocaching Navigator. You never did say whether the field notes don't appear or whether the issue was that you can't access from GN. Double check to make sure your phone is linked to your account. Mine came unlinked at one time and once I was able to link it again, all of the caches that I posted field notes appeared.
  9. There's software called CacheBerry. But I'd recommend you ask in the GPS and Technology forum. I like my Blackberry and finds it does well caching using the GPS. I travel a lot to visit relatives and using Geocache Navigator and the Blackberry makes "opportunistic" caching fantastic since most of the area I travel to are to urban cities where 1 PQ would barely cover a few miles. You can download Geocache Navigator from Handmark for about $40 and it is good for a full year. (Much better than the $7 per month with my old phone!) It is really nice that I can be almost anywhere and decide to pull up caches around me. The GPS is pretty darn accurate for most uses. I wouldn't cache in the woods with it but for nice urban/suburban caching it works great. LSUMonica
  10. My family has been using Canon's for years and LOVE them!! My sister had a A70, I had a A80 (the one with the movable screen). She upgraded to the A570, bought my mother one, and I upgraded to the A570 too. I lost the A570 at a geocaching event and then purchased another A570. Carried it every day in my purse for 2 years and dropped it many of times without a problem. Dropped it on a vacation in California last year and bought another Canon. Once again, carried in my purse EVERY DAY for a year. The lens started giving me problems before a recent vacation and so to have another camera, I upgraded to the A590IS. LOVE IT!! Image stablization, rugged, easy to use!! All for about $130 bucks at Circuit City. My old A570 is in my car so it doesn't get beat up as much but my A590 is in my purse 24/7. In my book, Canon it the best for point and shoot cameras!
  11. I may be one of the few that use the Calendar link feature... I have noticed since the site update the vCalendar document does not include the .ics or .vcs extension automatically. If you don't manually add it to the file name when you save the file, Outlook or calendars don't open it correctly. Would you add back the .ics or .vcs extension, please? Thanks for all that you do!! Oops! Just noticed that this is not a problem on all event listings. Just some events... Here is one where it doesn't work: GC1EDYQ
  12. You placed the cache and posted the coordinates --- getting there is at the discretion of the finder. It doesn't matter if they swim, paddle, boat, bike, hike or walk. If they manage to find the container and sign the logbook then it's a find to me!!
  13. I would LOVE it as the add to calendar really doesn't work with Outlook. I am starting to switch all my personal email addresses and other time management apps to Google ones so that I can access them from my phone, work, home, my sister's house, my brother's house, my mom's house (you get the point) without having to lug my laptop!
  14. Check and see if your cell phone has GPS navigation, web access and supports Geocache Navigator. This is what I use when I will be visiting relatives now in cities like Houston or Dallas. It is impossible to load enough waypoints into my GPS to cover those cities. So now with Geocache Navigator -- whereever I am, I can then see what caches are closest to me whereever I am located.
  15. I think there are subtle differences in posting an "armchair" needs maintenance and a should be archived in a lot of cases. Do I think an armchair NM should be posted on an active cache? Hmmm, there may be reasons... lots of DNFs over a period of time, absolutely NO communication by the cache placer on the status -- sure I might post one. Do I think an armchair SBA should be posted on an active cache? Hmmm, there may be reasons... lots of DNFs over a period of time, absolutely NO communication by the cache placer on the status, placer has not logged on in a while -- even more sure I might post one. Do I think an armchair SBA should be posted on an temporarily disabled cache? ABSOLUTELY if months, even years, have gone by with the cache disabled and no finds. Don't think this doesn't happen!! So who is responsible for helping the geocaching community in this case? The reviewers? They have a lot on their plates and some of them don't have time to go looking for these cache listings (although many of them do a fantastic job of monitoring these!). How does it look to new geocachers to see guidelines posted, understand they are supposed to adhere to them but then run across all of these caches that are posted that have been temp disabled for months and have no communication from their owners? Makes the geocaching community look even worse than someone making an "armchair" post. Proper communication and maintenance of your caches by following the guidelines make this whole topic a moot point! Communicate and there is no issue! Just my two cents!
  16. I just found a great deal on a Pharos GPS 525 on eBay and purchased it. Should be in on Friday, March 5. Will let you know how it works...cross our fingers!!
  17. At the beginning of the school year, I always pick up a couple of one shoulder backpack type bags at Dollar Tree. Once they rip, I throw them away -- but they actually take a pretty good beating. Great for grabbing from your trunk and heading out to a cache a short distance away. My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE bag is my REI Flashpack...$25.00 REI Flash UL Pack Absolutely love it!! ULTRALIGHT! Fits secure, just enough inside pockets, has a water reservoir pocket and when turned inside out is a stuff sack that fits into my overnight backpack! Cannot rave about this product enough.
  18. I am not calling out any Louisiana or other cacher and this was not the intent of my post. The intent was to agree with kayakanimal that there needs to be some serious review of the caches in Louisiana, to provide RANDOM specific examples of the issue, and if necessary, a nudge from official sources to perform maintenance. Obviously, the notes and emails by Henki and myself to individual cachers over the past few years have not done the trick. I too would much rather hunt caches that are there then ones that are not. In addition, this is not the best environment for newcomers to our sport when caches are not maintained. Don't get me wrong -- the reviewers have a thankless job, and I know many of you personally, like you all (for the most part ) and thank you for your work. If you know me well, you know my issue is fair and consistent application of policy -- if this is done across all states than I am fine with that.
  19. No offense to you palmetto, but I don't "buy" those statements. "There's simply no way for a reviewer to be aware of them" -- meaning caches that have been temp disabled for months??? Hmm, well then how come my local reviewers in Tennessee and KY post notes to caches on a REGULAR basis to caches that have been temp disabled for over a month and then archive them after 2 months if no notes have been posted to the cache page. How are they doing that???? Ahh, with simple PQs of temp disabled caches -- it's not that difficult. I'm not a reviewer and that's how I came up with a bookmark list (3 years ago) of caches that needed attention in Louisiana. "Louisiana and the other Gulf Coast states suffered enormously through the hurricanes, a tough area to do cache listing clean up." There has been some slack for the coastal area and that is fine. My aunt and uncle in NO were displaced for 11 months (house had to be gutted) and my cousins house flooded so I have been personally affected. BUT A LOT of these were an issue BEFORE Katrina! Also, check the locations -- some are even "up north", ie. Shreveport, Monroe, Alexandria area. I only listed about 6 on this post but there are too many others to list. Want my bookmark list? Talk to the locals here including my reviewers, my life has been crazy for the past few months and I have slacked on issues related to geocaching this year, so I can perfectly understand how things can get in the way of geocaching BUT my issue is the FAIR and CONSISTENT application of policy. So if there are personal issues with any reviewer, then work as a team to help out so that everyone is treated fairly!
  20. Any update to this?????? It's still happening to me and I know this has been brought up by others...
  21. Ahh!! Now you have discovered one of the benefits of being a PREMIUM member! Premium members have the ability to run Pocket Queries or PQs, as they are commonly refered to. PQs are a group of cache listings in the .gpx format. You can run PQs based on activity, location, type, etc, or in your case based on your found status. This PQ can then be imported into quite a few software programs. Truly for all the features, Premium Membership at $30 a year or $3 a month is quite a bargin!
  22. Ahhhhh!!! Welcome to the world of Louisiana caching!! I thought I recognized that as a Louisiana zip code! As some one who now lives in another state (Tennessee) but has caches in Louisiana (my mom lives in Thibodaux and I am a FREQUENT visitor) -- there is DEFINATELY a difference in cache maintenance philosophy among regions. I too have been frustrated by the lack of maintenance notes and upkeep of caches in my home state of Louisiana. I have emailed cache owners in Lousiana asking them to check on their caches and get no response!! Or I'll get an email stating they would check on it but then no response via email on the cache page. THERE ARE CACHES THAT HAVE BEEN DISABLED SINCE 2005 with no maintenance!!! About a year ago HENKI, a Louisiana based cacher, made a great attempt to post notes on cache pages asking owners on disabled caches or on cachers not found (with DNFs) in the past two years to bring this issue to the owners attention. And yet, the caches are still there in the same status!!! Don't get me wrong -- I know Hurricane Katrina affected a lot of caches and a lot of lives including my relatives and that was a perfectly valid reason for a period of time but this is getting ridiculous!! Even 6 months of a cache being disabled WITHOUT a note should be grounds for automatic archiving! There are a LOT of cache owners in Louisiana that do maintain their caches but there are a lot who don't! Wish I could help but I even compiled a bookmark list of needs maintenance caches about 3 years ago and there are STILL caches that have not been looked at... Here are some examples: GCGMVX GC89D8 GCGAW8 this cache even had 2 SBAs posted in 2005 and it is STILL UNAVAILABLE: GCCCDA GCKCJH I posted a SBA on this one in July -- GCN2GN FYI of the 30 total caches that are not mine within 20 miles of my mom's house, 10 have been temporarily disabled since 2006 or have not been found with mutliple DNFs posted since 1996!!! That's 33%!!! How frustrating is this for new cachers in the area that see these caches near them and get frustrated because they are not there but still showing as active. Louisiana is NOT a cache dense state so its not like someone can find another cache less than a mile away! Sorry -- but I am with kayakanimal. If the guidelines are there, then they need to be applied fairly across the board. If mtn-man (you know I think you are a great person) needs some help in getting Louisiana "cleaned-up" then, PLEASE send some help!
  23. I was just going to the forums to report this same thing and saw your post. Created a .kml file from Angels Camp, CA to San Francisco, CA and everything looks fine. Query and maps on GC.com look great. Created another .kml for Napa, CA to Angels Camp, CA and here the preview route goes "wonky" as you would say!! Looks great from Napa until I get to Valley Springs then -- oops! it heads north. It really should be heading to what is called "Angels City" on the preview. Here is a link to the public route so that you can view real time what I am talking about: Napa CA to Angels Camp CA The pocket query looks great however, its just the preview on the map.
  24. I created accounts for my niece and nephew as soon as they started coming "treasure hunting' with me. My niece was 11 months old and my nephew almost 2. They are now 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 and we still go out "treasure hunting" when we are together! It's the memories that I keep track of for them... Like the time I took my nephew geocaching at Christmas for his first find and promised to take him back when he came back to visit in April -- never thinking he would remember! Ha! His mind is like a steel trap -- the week before the trip he kept telling everyone that I was going to take him treasure hunting and that this time we had to DRESS like treasure hunters too! Guess who had to sew a pirate costume for him really quick!! Funny thing is, 2 and a half years later, whenever he visits my mom and they go to the park where the first cache was found he remembers where it was and has to check on it each time!! When I picked there name I based it on there real names so that they would not "grow" out of them -- see drewr and anasee for pictures.
