  1. I buy two of every coin -- one for my collection and one to go out "into the wild". Have 80 activated (about 20-30 more still to go) so that makes approximately: My collection: 40, out in caches: 40. By the way I haven't lost one in caches yet! Even my GW3 coins in the wild are traveling! In fact I got the GW3 coin I released at GW3 in honor of my first 1000 caches back in my hands just recently after traveling for a year.
  2. I seem to be having problems with navigation of bookmark pages. When I view my own bookmark lists or other's bookmark lists and click on the page number on the bottom of the window, the page does not refresh. I still see the same caches but the bookmark page number does increment. Also, even if I ask to see 50 caches on a page only the same number appear when the pages refreshes. I can get these items, both the page numbers and number of caches on a page, to work correctly but ONLY when I manually refresh the page. Then the problems seem to go away and everything works correctly even when I change options. So to sum it up -- when I first look at a bookmark list and change options and the page refreshes automatically, things don't seem to work. I press the refresh icon in the toolbar of IE, the page refreshes and then everything works as it should. I can provide screen shots of the issues if necessary. Anybody else encounter this problem?
  3. I used to live in Beaufort pre-geocacaching days so I never did any caches there, but there are a few places that I used to visit and love where I have now discovered that there is a geocache there! These are a few: GC2D54 Sheldon Ruins GC3E00 Hit or Miss? There are few that are in other GREAT places but right now they are temp disabled. Don't forget to climb the Lighthouse on Hunting Island, visit downtown Beaufort and see the houses featured in The Big Chill, Forces of Nature and Prince of Tides, eat some ice cream at Plum's for me too!! 4. I personally think it is up to the category management group. I personally have contributed to the Kentucky and Tennessee group as well as am the leader for the Louisiana Marker group. I think that as long as the category defines what is acceptable and what is not, then it is fine to have multiple types of markers for a category. In Tennessee, there are markers issued by the Tennessee Historical Commission, county historical commissions, war group historical commissions, cities, etc. In fact, it is markers by these lesser known groups which I find the most interesting as it is often as little known fact that is honored by their attention. In my description for the Louisiana Historical Markers category I purposely worded the description as follows . There are just too many areas and markers of historical interest in the State of Louisiana that WERE NOT ERECTED by the state. (In Louisiana, the state does not pay for the "official" markers, local groups do but they have to have approval from the state!) My 2 cents -- I vote for the category management to determine the direction of the category. LSUMonica
  5. Thank you!!! This looks great! Will have to post my finds soon -- as soon as I can get my Internet connection at home back up and running 100%!
  6. I thought I understood that first to recover meant that the finder was the first one to find it since the very first orginal note (the monumentation) -- you would not be counted as the first to recover if others agencies (Power Squadrons, etc) had found it even thouhg you were the first geocacher/benchmarker to find it and log it. Am I correct? So what I understood was correct? No so much worried about the score but more about my knowledge...
  7. First to recover question... Looking at some of the ones that were noted in the "log your finds" thread there is some discrepancies in the "first to recover" information. See these as examples: Is this a "first to recover"? OR is this a "first to recover'? Thanks for your help!
  8. I was in Phoenix, Arizona last month for a spur of the moment geocaching/benchmark hunting trip. In preparation for my trip I downloaded the yearly archived data sheet sets for Maricopa County and imported them into my benchmarks database in GSAK using BMGPX. So while out and about I decided to look for RV 74 (DV0220) and 1112.49 (DV0219) which were fairly close to the road and not on private property. For DV0220 I found the railroad abutment as described but no benchmark, but I did find this nearby... on the curb of the road... Question 1: So I realize this is not RV 74 (DV0220) but is it a benchmark that should be added to Waymarking.com So I went across the street to find DV0219 and found a benchmark "AT A HIGHWAY BRIDGE OVER AN IRRIGATION CANAL, IN THE TOP OF THE SOUTHEAST CONCRETE ABUTMENT, AND 0.9 FOOT WEST OF THE EAST END. " but it has different stamping of 1114.30 but placed by the Arizona Highway Department... on a concrete abutment... But this marking in not in the NGS database. The approximate location according to my track logs is: N33 29.353 W112 07.639 Question 2: Is this a benchmark not in the NGS database or what??? Thanks for the help! LSUMonica
  9. Okay - I'm in...LSUMonica No way will I be able to compete with most of you but it will be fun...
  10. How about a textbox accepting non-decimal, numeric only answers? -Nate Tried that but that variable REQUIRES that you enter a singular and plural unit , i.e. year and years. So a "Year Dedicated or Erected" variable shows up as: 1984 years I would prefer not to see the "units". Monica
  11. Anyway to get a variable that would accept simply a four digit year?
  12. I asked for this category and it has been assigned to me as category manager. It is almost ready for release -- I just have to finish populating one of the drop down variables with the 64 parishes of Louisiana. I hope to finish this evening or tomorrow and then we are good to go! With the new group management feature that will be released soon, I would love to have "managment" help. Just drop me a line if interested... LSUMonica
  13. The point of this Waymarking category is that although there are only 13 certified sites for this organizations, there are hundreds more markers which commemorate the Trails of Tears. I know of 3-4 river crossings, and at least 4-5 other sites just near me (within 90 miles) in Tennessee alone that played a part in the Trail of Tears. The point is to document the lesser know references.
  14. In 1838, the United States government forcibly removed more than 16,000 Cherokee Indian people from their homelands in Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia, and sent them to Indian Territory (today known as Oklahoma). The impact to the Cherokee was devastating. Hundreds of Cherokee died during their trip west, and thousands more perished from the consequences of relocation. This tragic chapter in American and Cherokee history became known as the Trail of Tears, and culminated the implementation of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, which mandated the removal of all American Indian tribes east of the Mississippi River to lands in the West. The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail commemorates the removal of the Cherokee and the paths that 17 Cherokee detachments followed westward. Today the trail encompasses about 2,200 miles of land and water routes, and traverses portions of nine states. This category would provide waymarks of "certified sites" as designated at Trails of Tears Association and the National Park Service as well as other sites involved in the Trail of Tears.
  15. Can you approximate the coordinates using a mapping program? This will help. Also, each benchmark should have an identifier stamped on it. If you can make it out in the picture, check www.ngs.noaa.gov to look it up by that identifier. If you email me the picture (lsumonica@gmail.com) I can help. Also remember that the Waymarking benchmarks are for those not found in the BENCHMARKS section of geocaching.com. The benchmark may be in that database ready for you to post a "found it" log and the picture.
  16. Definately want gold and 5 regular! Any chance of getting as many gold coins as APE caches you have found?
  17. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to manage this category.
  18. If you want to post it now -- I'll take public sundials as a submission in my "Town Clocks" category, since it is technically a clock! LSUmonica
  19. From a personal level, I like the challenge of discovery of new waypoints not just the visiting of them. I own the category of "Town Clocks" I have been taking pictures of freestanding clocks for quite a period of time before owning a GPSr. My enjoyment comes from the discovery. I don't go out specifically looking for them. My enjoyment comes from coming upon them by accident -- example: Was geocaching in Clarksville, IN the other weekend and while driving to a McDonald's for a bathroom break I found a freestanding clock! Wow! Stopped the car and took the coordinates and a picture even though I really had to get the the McDonald's. My excitement comes from going to the waymark database and seeing if I am the first one to waymark it! If I am -- Hooray! If it is already in the database, terrific I will still mark it as visited but I don't lose my joy of coming upon it by accident. That's just how I play the game. If there were a preloaded database of clocks -- I might seek out the interesting ones to visit but my joy comes from my discovery of an potential waymark entry. In my opinion, I think what is "slowing" down the population of waymark entries is the randomness of it. Do I look for Burger Kings or is McDonald's being waymarked? Wait here is a historical marker in Indiana -- it there a category for it or is it just PA and OH markers that are being waymarked? I've taken a lot of pictures of things and obtained coordinates of things I am hoping to be waymarked in the future (TN historical markers, etc) but will I lose the data before then or will I have all of the information the owner requires -- I don't know. Thanks for allowing my to express my opinion.
  20. Make sure to READ the Cache List Requirements/Guidelines. When you submit a cache, you state that you have read the guidelines. From the Cache Listing Requirements/Guidelines updated Nov 2, 2005: By submitting a cache listing, you assure us that you have adequate permission to hide your cache in the selected location. Regarding what is considered a commercial cache: From the Cache Listing Requirements/Guidelines updated Nov 2, 2005: Commercial caches attempt to use the Geocaching.com web site cache reporting tool directly or indirectly (intentionally or non-intentionally) to solicit customers through a Geocaching.com listing. While we may agree or disagree with these guidelines and definition of these guidelines. This is it. So a cache located in the parking lot or near a commercial establishment is not considered a commercial cache unless the cache submission was to draw customers to a site.
  21. I will be traveling to Phoenix for a leisure weekend TOMORROW (had a free ticket on SW Airlines that I had to use this weekend) and am looking for suggestions of caches and things to do. I'll only have a day and a half and will have a rental car. Any ideas? Last time I was in the area (except for the airport) was back in 1991 in Scottsdale. Any great museums, vistor centers, that are must dos? Thanks! LSUMonica Nashville, TN
  22. I would have about 40 TN markers to post as I started recording TN markers for fun when I first started geocaching. If you decided to get into team management, I would be happy to help!
  23. Dang -- Just don't live close enough to PA to compete for this one and I have to be at a geocaching event in town this weekend so I can't fly up just for this!! Now, if you were looking for TENNESSEE historical markers I could load at least 40 in no time since this was my personal GPS project when I first started geocaching. BTW -- I really like the category as I have been a "historical marker reader" since very young. I still remember on vacation my father telling me "No Monica, we will not stop the historical marker since we have already stopped for 5 already!!" The category is a great way to be a virtual tourist!
