  1. That brings up the question- If I use the copy and the original resurfaces, what happens? That would be difficult to track. Thanks Enjoy
  2. I have seven TBs out in the wild. One is missing in an unknown location (Papa Bear James V) and one is being held by a cacher with very few finds and apparently no recent activity (Jumpin Jerry). Papa Bear vanished from I-64@I-164 TB Hotel in Indiana. The cache owner notified me that it was missing. Jerry is "allegedly" in the hands of a cacher with 7 finds and who hasn't visited the site since Jun 19, 05. I have e-mailed them 3 times since May asking for a status on the TB. They have not responded. Their last find was 4 days after they picked up the TB on Apr 13. When is it safe/appropriate to use the copy tag? How much time should pass?

    Toronto Zoo Visit

Thanks for the info. On my last two mini-trips, I asked geocachers in the area for suggestions. Both times they responded with good stuff. I am still looking for that must do cache for my daughter. She will be 9 next week. The zoo was her birthday wish, the caches are extra icing. Enjoy Ron
  4. We are coming to Toronto Zoo next weekend. While we are there, we want to do some caching. Problem is, I don't know exactly where the Zoo is. I did a search from the Zip of the hotel (M3C 1J3), and looked West, but that doesn't help with doing ones near the zoo and hotel. Does anyone have coordinates for the zoo or the nearest cache to the zoo so I can do a search from there. And is there a family friendly must do cache within 25 miles of the zoo. We only have 2 days and 8 hours of that is driving, 6-8 hrs in the zoo, maybe a couple of sites ( I think I read about a castle near there and thinking of the CN Tower) and a few hours of sleep. So any caches near these locations that my daughter can trade items and drop TBs would be great. Thanks for your assistance, Ron
  5. I have placed 4 in Wellesley Island State Park. I did this after I heard that the Nature Center Manager had pulled all caches in that State Park. I contacted the manager, set up an appointment, and brought along cache items, information and my best interview face to the meeting. We walked the trails, and he showed me why he pulled the caches (safety concerns) and set places for me to place my caches. By the time we finished our travels and conversations, he had signed me up to be the Geocaching POC volunteer for his parks. He wants me to meet, accompany, assist with cachers setting up caches. I got permits assigned that day, placed them on the caches and marked all locations as required. I had to come back and fill them with the logs and SWAG (I wasn't as prepared as I thought). He also gave me the pulled caches. I removed, and moved the TBs on their way, and notified the owners of ones that are missing from the caches. I am waiting for permission from the cache owner to replace his caches in a safer location near their original coordinates. I found the Park Manager I spoke with to be very receptive to Geocaching. He was told to remove the caches by his supervisors. The NY Admin approver I contacted said that it is up to the Park managers to approve the cache locations, if they gave a permit and I included the number, it would probably be approved (if it net GC.com standards). This Park Manager was OK with placement outside the stated standards if he approved the site, basically, case by case. In my experience, communication works. I know each park will be a little different, but until I spoke with this manager, all he knew was there was stuff in his park that wasn't supposed to be there. Now he wants to know more about caching. I saw someone note that Park Managers were usually available M-F. I am usually free on Mondays, and the Park Manager, (I think) works Tues -Sat.
  6. I understand everyone plays the way they want and it serves different needs for different people. Personally I play the game the same way I would want others to play. If I want to have people trade good items in my caches, then leave good stuff in theirs. I want my TBs to be taken care of, so take care of others. I think my GeoKarma is back in synch after drowning that TB last year, I didn't think it was my fault, but I spent days trying to recover it from the river. Many people in these forums provided good ideas when I needed advice, so I should do the same. Basically-take the same care of the game pieces that you would take with your own items. I think it could get better. Geocaching gets me out and about to places I would have never known about, so I'll continue. I just hope others will step up and act a little more responsibly.
  7. I have been caching about 1 year and have just broken the 50 line. My question/observance concerns the 10 or so people/teams that I have heard from, met or noticed in the logbook right before me that I don't see on the cache logs after. About 20% of the time I somehow encounter someone who doesn't log their visits on the sight. I thought I had to sign up and establish a name before I could look at the cache listings, maybe not (it's been a year). I have also noticed that caches do not contain items listed in the logs (you know, the must have item you went to the cache for and it was gone 2 days later with no cache visit log) and have noticed many missing TBs that were logged into the cache, but aren't there now and were never logged out. I know that all these things have many reasons and variables that could explain why they aren't there, but (in case I didn't have to) Does anyone think that having to register to see the listings might cut down on the discrepencies? I am not talking about paying to play, just registering. I know people that don't log any of their finds. Fine by me. But I am more concerned with someone looking up a cache, going after it, and it disappear. Then no one knows why or where. Can anything be done? Maybe not, but I had to ask. Thanks
  8. I just finished (approved today) a puzzle set which has 4 pieces. Three are micros with logs. These three along with clues from the puzzle page of the fourth should lead them to the fourth cache. The fourth (puzzle) cache is loaded with stuff and a logbook. You just have to find the other three first and solve the puzzle to find the main cache. You would also get credit for 4 finds. I also set it up as a members only cache. I plan on changing to a regular cache after it is found by a few people or 45 days whichever comes first. I have some higher end SWAG in the cache that I don't want to get muggled. Hope this helps
  9. First I don't really know. But there is another thread by Roamin Redneck that asks a similiar question and the respondents told him to put it in an "unknown location". Then if it turned up it could be reactivated and logged by the finder. They said it was on the pulldown menu for TB logs. Sorry I don't know more Rojeel
  10. I haven't tried these yet, but I did buy some at Wal-Mart. A package of 3 was $8.95 (I think). If nothing else it would save you a few bucks to try them out.
  11. I know that without geocaching I probably would spend most of my time indoors. I was injured a while back, broken back and busted knees, so I really didn't do much of anything. Now after a year of part time geocaching I can walk nearly a mile (previously it was less than 100 yards) so I can say it does provide an incentive for rehabilitation. I still have difficulty, but finding a little box in the middle of nowhere drives me forward. I see some caches require little to no effort to find while some take climbing a mountain to log. I have climbed a couple of small mountains, it took several hours to complete, but for some reason I had to find the cache on top and that is what kept me taking that one more step. So I believe it does have some sporting aspects, but mainly it is fun and I get to see things I would probably have missed after my accident. My vote would be yes it is a sport.
  12. Thanks for the guidance. I think I understand it a little better. Now if I can just work out a decent puzzle code. Any suggestions? Enjoy
  13. I asked this in someone else's discussion instead of asking my own question so please don't answer both places. I am new to the hiding caches game. I have hidden 1 traditional. I have been given access to a large area which was previously deemed a no geocaching zone by the owner. He has decided to let me set up a series of caches and share this beautiful scenery with geocachers. I want to do two multi type cache 2-3 legs and set up 2 different final caches. -or- I would like to set each multi leg up as an individual micro and place clues to a final cache so that they could get credit for each leg. Would that make/qualify the final cache a puzzle cache? I see the general requirements for posting a puzzle cache, but I am looking for more experienced advice from the community at large. We have some devious cache hiders up here and I want to try and stump them. Thanks

  15. Thanks to all. I have met with the cache owner. The TB is missing and presumed drowned. Of course the final call is the TB owner. The Black River has claimed another victim. There are two other flow controls downriver prior to another cache near the river. If it got caught on one of these, it is not safe to try and retrieve. If the water rises and flows over the controls there is a high possibility that it could wash up near the cache in Deferiet. NNY cachers please keep your eyes open near the river for a mouse in a ziploc bag. I searched on 4 different days and for about 8 hrs total. No luck. Again, thanks to all who replied. I did what I hoped someone would do for me if the situation were reversed. I am planning on sending out a memorial TB with the goal of getting back to the original owner and then returning up here. Then my Geo-Karma should be set right again. Enjoy Ron
  16. Thanks. How did you know where this cache was?, Since I am new to this, does some of the info become visible, or did you guess by looking at my profile somehow? I will follow your advice and work on a memorial TB. But I still hope it pops up, since mice can usually swim, except of course when they are in a ziploc bag with a chain around their neck. I feel a little better that someone thought I had done a proper search. I still have one more day and about 1/4 mile of riverbank after the flow control to search. I hope it didn't get sucked into the water treatment plant.
  17. Thanks for the response. Should I be more specific and name the TB, cache, river etc. So that maybe someone down river, slim chance with all the flow controls on this river, may find it and relocate it. Thanks
  18. I placed a TB, the first one I ever found, in a cache. This cache was near a river. The cache broke open and all contents were lost in the river. I feel responsible since I was the last finder, the next finder reported the loss. I have spent 2 days searching the area and finally found 1 of the 2 plastic ziplocs that were inside. Unfortunately it was not the one with the TB and log. I found the first bag about 100 yds downstream under some brush and under water. This was the heavier of the two bags. The river goes over a flow control about 100 more yards downstream. I have searched all walkable/wadeable areas of this section. Does anyone have a suggestion on handling this situation? I have offered to help reestablish the cache, but the TB appears to be lost. I have e-mailed the TB owner and explained the situation. I am waiting for the cache owner and the TB owner to respond. Thanks for your input Ron
