  1. Thats it. Thanks And yeah it has been awhile since I updated my gps. I've had problems with my software so just go with what I already had loaded in it. At least it's 1 less DNF
  2. I was going to do a couple of geocaches today in my area and there was one on my gps called "View of things goneby". I couldn't find the cache itself and I went online to mark it as a not found and I can't find any thing on it. any clue what may have happened to it?
  3. I got into it because I was trying to find some information on using a gps. My husband and I both hunt and we have for years with little or no trouble. Always used a compass but was always familiar enough with an area to find our way out. It was a beautiful fall day no snow on the ground, I had shot a deer and he took off over the hill . I have never had a deer go more then 50, 60 yds. I was going to wait a bit. My husband had heard the shot and walked over. while we're talking, it starts to snow. We decide best not to wait too long because the trail will be covered, so off we go. Over the hill, the deer jumps up and takes off. argh! So it starts snowing harder and because it was warm, the snow is melting as fast as it's landing. weird weather. But I was able to track it. every now and again we'd jump him up again. We chased him for 4 hours. finally my husband stops and says, "I have no idea where we are". We had walked for hours not sure which direction we had been going. I was upset that I was going to lose the deer, but he pointed out that we had to get out before dark. Even with the compasses, we ran into swamps and knowing there were swamps in the area, we had no idea which swamp we were at. When we found the road we were 2 miles from our truck, and it was dark. Funny how you can hunt all day but the moment you realize your lost, you expend alot of energy. It snowed all night and we went back the next day but had no clue where to even look for that deer. My husband told me that day, go find a gps and learn to use it. So the first gps I bought was a Magellan Sporttrack. I loved it. I now use a Magellan Platinum. While we use it mostly for hunting I do a few geocaches once in awhile. This year my work scheduled has sucked so haven't had time to do much. But I enjoy taking the grandkids out and exploring and they love to find "treasures". It's always loaded with caches so if i should find myself with some spare time, I have no excuses.
  4. Or better yet... the 2nd version with the FTR-er sitting on a log, nothing left but his bones...
  5. This happened today. I was trying to get in a few finds and decided to take my two labs. The first place I went to, I was a bit embarrassed and PO'ed by both of them. I let them out of the truck and they proceeded to poop every 10 feet. It wasn't like they hadn't gone. They're not allowed in the truck to begin with till they go. So I think being as how it was such a public place and I was NOT prepared to pick up after them, I ended up giving up on the find before I even got close. So the second place I went to, I left them in the truck. I couldn't find the cache anyways, but after looking for a good 20 minutes, I gave up and got back in the truck, only to find they had slobbered everywhere. The windows, seats, dashboard, steering wheel, console... I was ready to kill them both. So on to the 3rd place. Again I left them in the truck but only because there was a cliff nearby and I probably would have been tempted to push them over. that was a find. the last place I went to, I did take them out because they do love running in the woods. and there's a creek they love to swim in. The cache Veleur goes up a really steep hill. I'm hanging on for dear life as much as I could when I had a tree to hang on to. I got to a point where there was nothing to grab and I was trying not to slide back down. The youngest lab decides I need a face licking. I'm yelling and flailing my arms trying to push her away and she thinks I'm playing. She started getting real rambunctious and almost pushes me down the hill. I ended up grabbing a nearby stick and fending her off. She went off about half way down and pouted for a while. No I didn't hurt anything but her feelings. I did have a good laugh about it later. And yes I did find the cache. I even managed to get back down the hill without breaking my neck. Afterwards the dogs had a nice run thru the woods and a nice long swim in the creek. I went home and changed my muddy clothes and wiped down my truck.
  6. I'm curious, How much weight have you all lost since you started geocaching? I think it's great that you guys do this. I'm a little (cringe) overweight myself and I don't have near as much enthusiasm as you seem to. Good going people.
  7. Excuse me, but IMO this post shows extreme arrogance and the total lack of knowledge of the poster. In many areas of the country Google Earth lacks the capability to show ANYWHERE NEAR enough detail to be able to identify a specific address. In my area , GE is totally worthless. Really? I have only been using GE for a few months, so I wouldn't know. I will test this once I go to montana. I will compare survey results with GE results. I used Google Earth last year to find a hunting preserve where we were going to hunt. Google earth was only about 10 miles off.
  8. Thanks, the patch works great no more loading the 3rd disk! Thanks alot. I just tried it and yes it works awsome!
  9. Interesting subject. I too think that it's a shame what their doing to Mt. Everest and other such places. I understand the base camps look like dumps.. Anyways, maybe what they should do is make every climber pay for his or her own rescue ahead of time. IF they make it back then that can be reinbursed... (LOL, "yeah right! We'll be right there ole chap"...)
  10. I have 2, count them...TWO! and I do like it alot. But I did recently buy another newer one, the Platinum. Which is pretty similiar. My suggestion is d/l the manual and just take it a step at a time. The "Menu" is where you'll find the landmarks, routes, setup etc. Depending on what nav page your on, should bring up a different menu. The only aggravation I've ever had with the Tracker is that it seems to need to be initialized often. No biggie, just time consuming. Good luck.
  11. I thought I'd already posted to this years ago, but I guess not. Anyways, We got our nick before we found geocaching. My husband and I had been out hunting and what started out as a beautiful day turned into a weather nightmare. Long story short, even tho we both had compasses, 10 degrees differences between the two of them put us 2 miles from our truck. Funny how you can walk all day and have a great time till you realize you may be lost,l then the boots gain 10 lbs each and every rock and log out there reaches up and trips you. Anyways, hubby decided it was time for us to invest in a gps and it was my job to learn to use it. Thats how I found this website. Even though we don't get out much I do enjoy it and have gotten a few friends into it.
  12. It depends on when and where I get caught. If I've already found the cache, I'll explain what I'm doing. Of course only if the people asking look dependable. (If they look suspicious, I'd probably be clutching at my dogs with one hand and reaching for my .45 with the other). LOL. I try not to let them see me near the cache. I'll leave if I have to and try again another time.
  13. I've been looking myself for mapsend and after a little research came to the conclusion that it can't be used on more then 1 gpsr. something to do with serial numbers or something.
  14. LOL.. I'm sorry but yes, it is an older model. So I'm basically SOL I take it? just uninstall the GSAK? I've tried looking for updates for my unit and their not available. But thanks for your help guys..I appreciate the effort.
  15. The error msg i get is "error sending waypoints: MAGPROTO: Unknown receiver type 23. model version 'rev 2.04" I checked the ports should be the same.. com port 1 and the baud rate is the same. 19200. I checked the gps with my topo and it d/l's just fine, its just GSAK it seems to have a problem with.
  16. is it possible that since i've installed GSAK, that it won't allow me to d/l to my gps from the computer? For awhile I was thinking maybe it was with my gps, but then I've got 2 of the same and neither one of them will d/l from any of my programs to my gps. Reflecting back, I'm sure this started about the time I installed GSAK. I've also thoght maybe it was my pc cable . but I have no way to check that for now. anyone out there have similiar problems? Or should I go buy a new gps?
  17. The whole reason we even bought our GPS's to begin with was we took a wrong turn during a hunt and ended up on the wrong side of a swamp. We both had taken compass readings but from different spots. We were trailing a buck I'd shot and to begin with it was a beautiful day. But as we trailed, it started to snow. I got anxious because I didn't want to lose the trail under the snow so we ended up pushing this deer deeper into the woods. The temperature was such that it would snow like crazy, and then the sun would come out and it would melt the snow. Weirdest weather I’ve ever seen. After trailing the deer for 4 hours my husband finally convinced me we weren't going to get this deer and asked if I had any clue where we were. Looking around, no... I didn't. We had never been that far back before. Because we had taken a compass reading, we knew which direction to go at least and headed back to the truck. The snow got worse to the point where if we had separated more then 15 feet from each other, we couldn't see one another at all. I was close to panicking. Actually I think I was in a panic mode. There are 3 swamps in the area we hunt and we came to one of them and because we had no topo map with us, were unsure which of the swamps it was. Had we gone around to the right, we would have come out where we should have, but mistaking it for a different one, we went to the left and ended up about 2 miles from the truck. After tripping over every log, rock and stick in the woods for 2 hours or so, we finally came to the road. I was ready to just lay down and die at this point. A couple of guys in a jeep came along gave us a ride to our truck. Funny how you can hunt all day but as soon as you know your lost, your energy just goes right out the window. Anyways, we bought our gps's and I found this site and learned how to use it. I never go into the woods now without the gps, fresh batteries, flashlight, topo map, compass, granola bar, matches and water.
  18. what type of wood is the divining rod from? I use willow but just seem to find creeks and streams.
  19. http://maps.nationalgeographic.com/topo/pocket.cfm This seems to work pretty good on my zire31, but can't tell you if it would work with the gps attached. Pretty neat program tho.
  20. I can't believe there is noone that can help me with this..
  21. Its been awhile since I had similiar problems with my magellan. But If I recall, they told me to pull the batteries out for a short period of time, like 10 minutes then initilize it again. Won't hurt i'm sure.
  22. I own 2 magellan trackers and I really like them. I can't afford to upgrade everything anyways, But what I'd like to do is connect the Tracker to my zire31. My son says he might be able to make me cables but doesn't want to take a chance of frying either of them. I can't seem to find anything on the subject. Can it be done and how? I have a topo program for the zire and it allows for the connection. Please help?!?! Thanks
  23. You can assume that I carry. I do have a license to carry concealed and unless theres a need to bring it out, it will stay concealed and anyone that knows me also knows that I may or may not have a weapon and only in a given situation have I been asked. I have to chuckle at most of the obviously anti-gun replies to this forum. I worked for over 10 yrs at a nation-wide company that had a "no weapons on premises policy". However, the District Manager and the Office Manager had a "don't ask, don't tell policy". They both carried just as 90% of the employees who by the way were mostly women. No one was ever seen "flashing" but we all knew who we were. Once while coming into work, my immediate supervisor stopped me at the door and asked if I had brought my friend. She had received a threatening call and had called the police who would patrol the area, but felt safer knowing we were protected. And yes the police were always first notified in case of threats. We never went off half cocked. I also agree that being aware of your surroundings is important in being safe whether you carry or not. Most criminals want someone that's not paying much attention to them. I am also a martial artist and believe it or not, most blackbelts that I know, also carry.
  24. in regards to the cracks on the gps's. I worked for several years in a plastic factory, doing mold set-up and material handling. I'm sure if Magellan were to delve into the problem they would find that the plastic used for the cases is not correct for their requirements. They should go back to the plastic manufacturer and have the quality control test the plastic and backtrack the material used.
