  1. Trackables... I think it's important to mention them as well. It's an attraction for some people and not knowing what they are can lead to a disaster (being treated as swag, etc).
  2. On a side note.... Permethrin is a dangerous nurotoxin and should be treated as such. Do not spray it on your skin, do not inhale any of the vapors and do not over-apply to your clothing. Just apply to openings... around the collars, sleeves, button holes, etc. It's used in flea collars, for dogs so it's "consumer level toxic", but it should still be treated with care. According to wikipedia it is toxic to cats. Another site agrees: http://cats.about.com/cs/healthissues/a/permethrin.htm. Neither cite scientific study, but it's worth making sure the cat isn't in the room when your spraying the stuff.
  3. I would recommend using Google. I found this list of usefull tips at About.com...:
  4. I ordered a case of stone arrowheads. I think I got around 50 or so for about $20. Thats about 40 cents each. They make a decent sig item too. E-bay is a great option. You can frequently find 100+/- packs of various things for cheep. Carabiners, LED flashlights, keychains, bottle openers, etc.
  5. "Be the change that you want to see in the world." - Mohandas Gandhi
  6. Yes, but if your allergic to bees your not necessarily allergic to yellow jackets. Hmmm http://www.allergic.net/allergy_info/venom1.html
  7. Edit: Post removed. Nevermind. I don't know how to respond without expressing my shock at your post.
  8. I'd be thrilled to find one of those statues. I'd be thrilled to find a crucifix too!
  9. I think any organization using geocaching as a tool to push an agenda is harmful to geocaching. Atleast in a small way. So, in response, I try to make geocaching a more positive experience for others in a small way by removing the advertisements. Since I usually leave swag in a cache anyway (also, since I want to make the cache a better experience), I might as well call it a trade. "Wait, what about the Jeep Travel Bugs/APE caches!" you might say... well, geocaching.com got income from both promotions and geocachers were involved in a positive way (with the contests, etc) so it did have some mitigation to the crass commercialization.
  10. There isn't a single comment here that has been about you. Some posts have dismissed your idea, some have commented on how they think it's a flawed concept and others have tried to point out what they think the consequences might be. If you don't actually want honest feedback please feel free to let us know up front.
  11. The reviewer will leave a reviewer note about it, if it's near a hidden cache. (multi, puzzel, etc)
  12. Have you gotten permission from the mountain to place the cache?
  13. ???????????? .... I had checked the coords the night before and then again that morning but I didn't have the container compleatly ready yet. I brought it to work with me, thinking I could finish the cache page, and then have time to go drop the cache off at lunch. My first cache took a while and I had just read some posts on the forum whining about 70+ hour waits so I thought there was no rush. I won't make that mistake again. I immediately disabled the cache, made a note to the reviewer and headed out to the site to drop off the container. Only took 15 min to hide the container... by the time I got back the cache had already been retracted (5 min or so) with a scolding note about having the cache ready. heh... I re-activated the cache and it was published within 30 min AGAIN! That's what I call speedy service and a learning experience.
  14. Well said. I'd personalty be fine with a Cross, Pentagram, Moon/star symbol of Islam, swastika of Hindu, star of david, dreamcatcher, etc.
  15. I think embedded sounds are always a bad idea in website design. That being said, I would be cool with a way to upload sound bites in wav or MP3 format.
  16. My first cache took 30+ hours. My second cache took around 10-15 min. It caught me off guard - the cache was still sitting in my car.
  17. The second post in this tread addresses this question. Now, is it ok if we discuss out particular views on the subject?
  18. I think a cross would be more appropriate then a pamphlet about why my sinning ways are going to send me to hell. I'm having a hard time articulating a reason why, so it might just be emotional.
  19. If the primary religion of the USA was Islam then I wouldn't be surprised to see tracts about the Qur'an in caches. I don't think there is anything in Wicca about converting people to Wicca.
  20. I would like to say that - those are very well composed photos and I think you did a great job. That said, the compressing artifacts and loss of detail in those are HORRID. Those are a great example of why being able to upload a larger image would be nice! It's easy. The uploader's interface wouldn't be changed at all. On the server's side it would generate three "thumbnails" of the image...lets call them A, B and C. You could do more, but three is a good number I think. A would be the tiny thumbnail used when your looking at the gallery. Respecting the orgional's aspect ratio, it would resize the image to fit within a 100x100 pixle box. For most pictures this would end up with a thumbnail close to 100x75 pixels. (Note: this is already done) If you click on A, you get B.B would be small, but larger then A and used for when someone clicks on the image in the gallery. B would be resized to fit into a 300x300 box, again, respecting the original aspect ratio. (Note: this is already done) On the page that shows B (see image above) you could link to C and the original. C would be a version of the image re-sized to fit with in a 1000 pixel box, respecting original aspect ratio. (Note: this is already done, kinda). The only change at all is that the original is stored and available. You could skip image "C" and the interface wouldn't need to be changed at all. Your precious bandwidth is already being conserved and you only ever load the larger image if you click on the picture. Thats how it is already. .
  21. I think I've spotted the person leaving religious tracts. Nope, Then I think you've guessed my point. I have a hard time with your concept that talking about a problem is somehow impature and childish. The forum gets used for all sorts of inane/petty/inconsequential things. Discussing something like this is actually well within the purpose of the forums even if you personally don't care one way or another. Useing geocaching as a forum to push a personal ideology is a serious topic since it can have a serious negitive impact on the perception of geocaching for those who are new to the sport.
  22. Maybe make it a multi with the library as the first stage? Just a thought.
  23. If the experience is going to be significantly different then it's really a "new cache" and it's best to archive/relist.
