  1. How could you tell? A true cacher would log the find. "TFTC, Took Ammo can, left footprints"
  2. Ok, first of all, I’m going to ignore all the angst and hypocrisy and focus on what I see as the important underlying issue. I think it’s the duty of the cache owner to make a good faith effort to rate the difficulty of the cache fairly. I’m not entirely sure what would make the event a 5/5 (maybe a river rafting trip…?) but I think it’s clear that a pizza party wouldn’t be one. I know personally I’d feel uncomfortable logging a “attended” on it. What was the justification offered for making it a 5/5? Was it pizza and water boarding? I think the appropriate response to this would be to shot an e-mail to the reviewers. edit: yes, I'm taking this way too seriously.
  3. Well, at that one should be easy to find, since "it was hidden less then a mile away from the original spot" I guess that lends a new meaning to expanding the search area! Jim I guess the CO could just set the difficulty to 5 and say "cache on"!
  4. OK, so if were are trading equally or better, what are those caps worth? 1/2 of a used golfball.
  5. Yeah, I think it's your phone. It seems to be working on my Blackberry Storm.
  6. Ok, TB is now finished! I'll drop it in a cache this or next week. Might wait for my camping trip however... Anyway, here's the bug's page: http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?tracker=TB29YYY Oh, I have a notebook like that somewhere around here...
  7. Personalty I like to find swag in a cache. I only rarely trade, but I frequently leave something... at the very least an arrowhead or maybe something more. Maybe a few things if the cache is empty or full of... "junk". I've occasionally removed trash (opened band-aids, ruined business cards, acorns, etc) but I never considered that I was trading for it.
  8. Google Earth has a great "ruler" tool. Beyond that, the only mileage tracking I know of is on travel bugs. Not sure if that's helpful for you however.
  9. I have a bug I'm going to be holding for a month.... I guess I better mail the owner and see if they are cool with that.
  10. Not on the Storm or the Tour. Anyway, I've been using Geocache Navigator and it's been quite helpful. I was hoping it could replace my GPSr, but unfortunately it has not. Nothing other then a GPSr can give me that "whats near me" on a map glance that the GPSr can.
  11. That sounds like a reasonable complaint... I mean, I paid my taxes on the dollar I earned to spent on the lotto ticket... and so did everyone else.
  12. I'm not entirely sure if this will answer your question or not, but GPS units are not 100% accurate. They can be more then 100 feet off depending on the circumstances. Usually they are better then that... 10 feet or so with some of the newer enhancements. One way to see this is if you write down your coords at a known location come back to that location the next day. If you have good weather and a good view of the sky then you might only be a few feet off. However, if you have some trees or buildings blocking your view or even some bad weather you might be 20-30 feet off. The next generation of the GPS system will be accurate to within a foot and do a much better job when under trees and buildings. Might be 5+ years before it starts to be available however.
  13. You'll need to e-mail support.
  14. Ah, yeah, that is a capital idea.
  15. No hits yet either... I also park near one of my caches so I've decided today to add a note about it in the cache listing. It's a puzzle cache, so it doesn't get much traffic.
  16. I'm going to turn a sketch pad into a travel bug. The TB would invite it's finders to sketch something in the book before moving it on. The goal is to create a traveling user-created art gallery(of sorts). Eventually when it's full I'd like to see it come back so I can scan all the drawings, replace the book and send it back out. I realize that's not all that likely, but it's worth aiming high sometimes. Has there been anything else like this circulated? How did it turn out?
  17. Umm... I think your completely misrepresenting this thread. It's about bugs in lonely caches, not caches in general.
  18. About 10 miles from my house is a cache... it's bike locker. The name of the cache is the combo for the lock. Out of the 100+ finds no one has complained yet. Indecently, it's still the largest cache I have ever found.
  19. Well, that's unfortunate. Seems like a lot of work to get a rusty $5 ammo can.
  20. It's working like normal for me. I'm running firefox 3.5.2. You can try hitting the "print" links to get a version of the page with less of the interface and other random junk.
  21. This has been bugging me a lot lately too. I've "found" about 10 caches that have supposedly had bugs but really didn't. Sometimes these bugs have been missing for years. I've been making it a habit to leave a notes now.... worked a few times.
  22. I believe REI sells travel bugs and various waterproof logbooks. They also sell lots of containers that would be suitable for service as geocaches. Oh, they have various GPSrs.
