  1. Thanks everyone, I appreciate your bids AND words of encouragement. :)

The University of California system has been hit really hard with budget stuff the last few years, and this year is just ugly. I'm a grad student there and Eli's employed by them, so it's kind of a double whammy. Anyway, we're just tightening our belts to get through this, and this is my contribution to the cause. :) Hopefully I'll be graduating next year and I can start collecting again. :D

  2. I loved the shaped one, and I hope you can make it work.

A question - can they laser engrave on a curve? I've always assumed they couldn't, and tracking codes need to be kept straight, but now that I think about it, I don't actually know for sure!

A comment - you can always curve the "track at geocaching.com" and "a traditional Japanese folk song" to follow the new outline. If you use Illustrator (I have no idea what you use) it's pretty straightforward to have the text on a curved path.

Also, the white/red/pink/black nickel one is divine.

  3. Thanks everyone for all your entries! I've really enjoyed reading all your suggestions and seeing your favorite coins. :)

Now for the important part. ;)

The winner is... redwingrr, post #173!

I'll send you a message in a second to get your info. Thanks again everyone!

Elements Compass is one of my favorites too. Here's Sun in Silver and a couple more.

I know I'm not the only one with an eye for the sparklies around here... Carion Crow.

Two of the WI coins (WGA) are in my favorites also - the 2008 cow and 2010 too.

  4. [From Mom: This cointest is such a cute idea, I had to enter! Well, get Mishka to enter.. handing the keyboard over now!]

My name is Mishka! I was born in Russia to a breeder, and as a puppy I went to a family that lived in Poland. When I was 6 months old, I got put into a crate, went on a long flight, and then put into a kennel and my parents left me for a very long time. :( They eventually came back and we moved to Reno! It was much warmer there which I didn't really like as much, but my mommy loved me so I made do. Over time, my mom and dad started fighting more and more. Eventually mom moved out and I was left with dad who didn't like me as much. One day he drove me out to the desert and gave me to a woman who was nice and reminded me of mom although she spoke a different language. Once there I was put into a big fenced area near lots of other dogs that looked kinda like me. That was when I was 5 years old.

The dogs next to me seemed to think they were cool stuff, so I decided to dig my way over to their fenced area to show them a thing or two! While digging I kept getting zaps from some wire thing that was around the bottom of my fence, but I just ignored them! Once I got into the other fenced area, I ended up making friends with the dog next to me. When the people found me, they decided to let me stay with him, which was fun!

It's good I had my buddy, because I was in this fenced area for 9 months. :( I missed being indoors all the time, and I missed being next to my mom. One day, after a lot of rain, a couple showed up with the woman who had taken me in. She let them into our fenced area. The girl immediately started talking to me, petting me and giving me lots of love. I liked her a lot! She even knew a few words in Russian and Polish which perked me right up! She ran around with me while the guy talked to the woman. After 30 minutes of lotsa love, they left again which made me very sad.

The next day though, they showed up again!! That was the 31st of January, 2010. It was right before my 6th birthday, and they said for my birthday they were going to take me home!! I was so excited, that I knocked the girl over when I ran ahead of her on my leash. Oops. She has forgiven me since... We got in their car (OH YAY I LOVE CARS!!) and we drove for HOURSSSsssss. But finally, I got to see my new home!

I'm so happy I came to this home! I get to stay inside, and sleep on the couch, and I go for walks twice a day, and car rides whenever I can convince mom to take me!

We just celebrated my one year gotcha day, and it feels like I've lived here my whole life. :)

    Coming home from Reno!

  5. I'm have a lovely time reading all of your responses. :) The rules can be seen as more of ...guidelines. ;) I'm not a huge stickler one way or the other, I just want to read what you all have to say about geocoins and what you like. :) I just added the rules to give some structure for those who prefer it!

Okay, well the every 4 hour thing is a rule. But other than that!

Thanks everyone for your input so far!

  6. Can I ask something??

In the favorite coins... we have to select from what we have or from all geocoins that exist?? I mean... is it ok to name a coin that we do not have but it is in one of our favorites?? Becasue I have some in my mind! :D

Doesn't matter if you own it or not. :)

Just interested in what people look for in coins, what they like, etc. Whatever you feel like mentioning is fine with me!

  7. Hi all!

I meant to do this ages ago, but it's been a little hectic around mi casa! There is a thread here that talks about what people coin collect around, and I thought I'd turn it into a cointest to encourage more people to participate. :D

Anyway, this is a cointest, random drawing done in one week (23 Mar 11) sometime after 9pm PDT (arggh I hate that D!) from any post on this thread that follows the guidelines below.

Please post ONE of the following:

    1. Your favorite geocoin (with picture if you can!!)

    2. What theme you collect around

    3. What coin you wish someone would make

Only answer one of those per post. You can post once every 4 hours.

I reserve the right to change the rules because I always forget what I said I was going to do by the end of the cointest. ;)

This is what you're playing for:

    santacruz.jpg

This is the "santa cruz" version of the le chat rampant coin, only 7 were minted. They were meant as raffle prizes but due to snafus and ignorance on my part, only 2 of the 4 meant for raffles were given homes. This is one of the cointests that will be held to give away the remaining two meant for raffles. Another one will happen when I get a bit more time. :)

    Thanks for playing!

  8. Thanks for all the great feedback!

I'm not sure what a rock otter would look like, but the antique copper one seems to say "rock" to me.

There are two other versions that I am having made. Waiting for the final production art and then the order will go in, so expect these in about 4 weeks. I'm not doing reservations, I ordered based on the interest in the different versions that I got here. If I run out there may be a re-mint, although I generally just make new versions instead of doing re-mints because I love playing with all the color combinations. :D

  9. Turtles sell well.

Seriously though, while there are some people who collect for content, I think most people are drawn to a well-designed coin. At least, I know that's my preference! Multiple layers below translucent enamel, interesting line work, well balanced design, and as someone else said, don't forget the back! I will generally not buy a coin that has a flat back with just a few things engraved into it.

Oh, and moving parts tend to draw me in, but some of them have gotten a bit too gimicky.

When I design, I just design what I'd like to buy and hope that other people will enjoy them, too. Designing to a market can be difficult as things trend in and out, get overdone and become less desirable (see: celtic coins).

With that said, I find this thread really interesting, and I'm glad the OP posted it. :)

  10. Thanks everyone for the nice remarks!

I got home early enough to snap some photos with actual sunlight *gasp* so you can see the colors better. :) I've also tried capturing the pearlescent finish on the white one.

I think I'm going to alter the color on the front of the black nickel one quite a bit as I'm not sure it makes sense to have two brown versions. The back will stay the same.

  11. I received the sample coins this evening! I will take better pictures this weekend or if I manage to get home before the sun sets. :)

For now, here is the black nickel version, front and back.

    brownfront.jpgbrownback.jpg

And of course, what would a coin post from me be without a gratuitous "flourescing under black light" shot?! (Please note, this is not glow-in-the-dark, some of the translucent enamels just happen to light up under UV light)

    flourescentback.jpg

  12. As long as you aren't doing 3D (which you aren't) and imitation hard enamels (not soft enamels) translucents work fine with black nickel. You can double check with the mint, but many (all?) of them do black nickel plating after IHE if it's not 3D. I'd guess it has something to do with the stoning process.

Here is one side of the black nickel sampler coin; as you can see, the colors are not muddied at all.

    blacknickelbacksm.jpg

  13. You store them in water of course! ;)

The cost will likely be $10/each.

I need to get the samples in hand to see if I want to make any changes, but other than tweaking gem colors, I'm pretty happy with them from the photos, so it will likely be about 3-4 weeks for them to arrive after I put in the order.

They will be available for sale on my website:
