  1. We have been caching for almost a year here in Finland, so have done many church and memorial caches. Mr Nosfera is English and Mrs Nosfera is Finnish. So far we have not found any of these types of cache locations to be disrespectful in any way, if anything we find them extremely respectful. We do not just add a cache to our find list, we take time to read the cache description, this often outlines why the cache has been placed in the location and adds to our experience. The caches are often placed with a great deal of respect in mind, be it respect for the fallen during conflict, or respect for the architecture, then again maybe respect for the community. We believe the finder brings their own type of respect to the place when searching the cache. You don't go just digging around, (although under Groundspeak guide lines caches should not be buried). If it was not for some of these caches we would not have seen some of the most beautiful architecture and scenery that we have, also we would not have visited some of the places that we have, or found out about some of the rich history in this country (yes even Mrs Nosfera has learnt some things about her native country). We thank the Finnish cachers for enriching our lives with well placed caches. Some of the locations can be seen in our goecaching blog (sorry it is all in English, but there are lots of pictures for non English readers). Nosfera
  2. Passport to Pimlico is a 1949 British comedy film made by Ealing Studios. Margaret Rutherford, Stanley Holloway and Hermione Baddeley star under the direction of Henry Cornelius. The script was written by T.E.B. Clarke and demonstrated his usual logical development of absurd ideas. Some scenes in which the residents are refused passage out of their district into London by the authorities, and rely on supplies thrown over the dividing wall by well-wishers, were very topical because the film was made during the Berlin Blockade. The film was inspired by a true incident during World War Two, when the royal family of the Netherlands (including the pregnant Princess Juliana) fled to Canada. Under Dutch law, a royal heir had to be born in the Netherlands in order to be eligible for succession to the throne. To accommodate this, the Canadian government passed a special law making her room in a Canadian maternity ward officially part of the Netherlands. Peace and Happy Caching and thanks for the cointest
  3. The supplying company has offered to replace the pin. This is a hard choice to make It turns out that this seems to be only the second time this has happened I am thinking of keeping this pin, as it is so special, and after all are we not as cachers trying to find something that others have not, or have over looked Peace and Happy Caching P.S I have not contacted coins&pins direct to find out what they think, and I would be interested to know what you all think and even more interested what geocaching.com think, as in is it worth mentioning when I activate the coin that it comes with a rare mis-minted pin.
  4. The reason for getting these late is because I brought a set for my partners Birthday (her birthday being today 27th Oct) The funny thing is I ordered both sets of the 100 Achievement from the same shop, at the same time, they even arrived in the same parcel. Being her Birthday Present I let her choose what gift box she wanted (unopened of course) and The set she chose (once opened) is correct 100 coin and 100 pin I guess the fates were on her side Yes the 250 set will be on order soon Peace and Happy Caching
  5. Well it is not even the 1000 finds pin really as it has the wrong colours for that, maybe some kind of hybred Kind of getting attached to my strange hybred pin Peace and Happy Caching
  6. I recently purchased a GeoAchievment gift set. Set is 100 finds. Well when it arrived I opened the box and examined my shiny new coin, it is beautifull. Then I examined the pin badge, and to my surprise it is a 1000 finds geo-pin badge, but not in the light green and gold plate, no this pin is in red and nickel plate. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Is it rare? View it here Peace and Happy Caching
  7. If this letter boxer wants to call himself a Geo-cacher let him...we find letter box hybreds, so why should letter boxers not find geo-caches? As I understand his method he does kind of use a gps, because he checks the location with online maps, here in Finland we have eniro maps, with those you can click a link called gps and it pin-points the location, you can even click another link and it will show a picture taken from a helicopter. This takes the fun out of caching for me, I like to go to an unknown area to search for my caches, not already know where the cache is, but saying that I do use it to re-confirm my cache hides. It does annoy me that the two letter boxers seem to try and make out "that they have invented a way to cache without a GPSr", as I said before, Letter boxing PREDATES Geo-Caching, and even featured in old episodes of blue peter Peace and Happy Caching (however you choose do it)
  8. You are infact letter boxing, and that predates GeoCaching
  9. Well put _TeamFitz_ Peace and Happy Caching
  10. We have been following this thread with a little interest. We have to admit that we feel/felt the poor micro and nano caches were/are getting bad press. Is it the fact that micro and nano caches are harder to find? or that urban caches are harder because of muggles? Today we did four caches on our way back from visiting relatives, three of these were micros and one was a nano, we thought about the locations, and the choices of size for two of the micros in our opinion was correct, the third could have been better placed with a larger cache box, but it was still a good hide because of the location scenery, as for the nano, there was no other option for this than a nano, but the location is/was poor and of no real interest, so was only good for numbers and experience. When we got home we checked for new caches in the area, and we found two new caches, and then we found ourselves saying "oh no not more micros". Yes of the new caches one is a micro and one is a nano, and reading the cache descriptions you just know that bigger containers could have been used. We will not let this put us off, but we will not be rushing to do these caches very soon. As for the idea about archiving, we have done something along this line already. We had done a cache just after it had been archived; We liked the location and the story behind this cache. We tried contacting the owner to see if he would mind if we placed a new cache in this area, he has never replied. So last week we placed our newest cache in that location, we upgraded the size of the container and moved it about 40 to 50 feet from the original, gave it the same name but added "Revisited" at the end, because this is what we want, cachers to revisit the area and not sit at home and just do the online logging "because we have done this cache before", as far as we are concerned this is an all new cache, with new owners and slightly new location. So far the logs have all been positive and some even thanking us for replacing the old archived cache. We still think there is a place for micros and nanos and urban caches, we ourselves have placed micros, and we know some people think that at least one of these could have done with a bigger container, but we chose very carefully, a bigger container would have meant damaging the environment, and that is something we will never do, it is also intended as easy access for disabled persons and families. So think before you rubbish a cache "am I complaining correctly? Is it just that I find urban caching hard because of muggles? Has this been done with disabilities in mind? Or is it just that it was placed by newbie's?" Peace and Happy Caching
  11. I have no degrees, I even dropped English and never took the exam, and my upbringing was not the best. But still I have had some really good jobs, including management positions. My sentence structure, spelling and grammar may not be the best in the world but I still try and make myself understood as clear as possible. So stop making excuses for these people, sloppiness is sloppiness and no amount of excuses will change that. Yes I have read those writers you mentioned, as everyone should, are you aware that the English language nearly died out? So let’s be proud of the fact that most of the world learns our native language, and put as much effort into spelling and grammar as they do. As for the cache descriptions, I do not think anyone cares about typo’s, but poor writing does not get your message across, after all you are trying to sell your cache, in a world where there are almost 1 million caches to choose from, and yes it is very much like a C.V where you are trying to sell yourself to a potential employer, where there are millions of potential employees. Although saying all this at the end of the day it IS only a game, but spelling and grammar should be a way of life. Dyslexia is well known these days, and those people who have dyslexia find ways to work with it, and not excuses, they can be proud and rightly so. Take pride in everything you do Peace and Happy Caching
  12. A lot has been said here. There is a big difference between poor spelling/grammar and dyslexia. I personally hate to read sloppy writings, and yes that is what poor spelling/grammar comes down too, sloppiness. But this is not always the writers fault, having brought up 4 children; I have seen how the education system has changed over the years, so that now the emphasis is not on spelling and grammar. Teachers are taught not to correct all spelling mistakes, as this can dishearten the students, as long as the message is understandable. One person here said about writing cache descriptions in Latin, well I now live in Finland, and recently there was a cache posted that is all in Latin, and yes it is a mystery cache. There is also another mystery cache that is using spelling mistakes in cache logs for the cache location coordinate clues. So you see this is not just restricted to the UK. Being a foreigner, and not 100% fluent in Finnish I do not always read all of the descriptions, as a lot are only in Finnish, but that does not stop me from enjoying this hobby. Yes bad spelling and grammar are horrible, and as for Americanisms let’s not even go down that road. Peace and Happy Caching. [Edited to correct some, but not all, grammatical mistakes]
  13. I had noticed that at the moment it was only for FF I run a few websites and the stats on that show that more people seem to use FF than any other browser. Personally I only use FF for geocaching I have looked and although you can get greasemonkey for IE or another option is Trixie (a kind of greasemonkey emulator), the required gcvote java script still does not work with those. Peace and Happy Caching
  14. Neither can I Thank you and added to list
  15. I tend to agree, and as you both say it does seem to still be early days. We (that is Team nosfera) have only just found out about it ourselves, and wondered how many others knew it even excisted, and of those that did, how many were using it. Peace and Happy Caching
  16. Hi again Just a short question. Do any of you use GCVote? Peace and Happy Caching
  17. This might not be exactly what you are looking for in the way of a coin, but it might help, and is a starting point. Peace and Happy Caching
  18. It might also help to leave a plee for help in the german part of the forum. A short time ago in the Finnish forums a CZ cacher had one of his trackables stuck in a cache, and asked for help, his request was answered and the trackable was soon on the move again. Peace and Happy Caching
  19. Thank you, and added to watch list
  20. Hi all I am trying to find good and interesting blogs to do with your geocaching stories and/or adventures. I have found a few American ones, but do not seem to find any interesting British ones. I recently started my own blog (although I live in Finland I am English and the blog is written in English), and is about our (my partner caches with me) adventures here in Finland. If any of you are interested you can read it from this link. I look forward to your replies, and hopefully reading some of your own blogs. Peace and Happy Caching
  21. Although I am English and living in Finland I still visit the UK forums, more so at this time as me and my partner are planning to visit Surrey very soon for a couple of days. Well this thread caught my eye, and I have to say that we nearly stopped caching in the early days because of hard to find caches, that is to say that the coordinates were not good and off by quiet a lot, this did start to dis-hearten us, but we stuck with it. I also think and have to agree with others that life can get in the way of caching and other hobbies, be it family, work, or any other "real life" activities. I also have to agree that the back biting might be an issue, although personally I would just stop visiting the forums, but saying that I do not think it helps to tell people that there cache is rubbish just because it does not fit what you personally think is a good cache. We recently published our first cache and it is a micro, and has been well received by the other cachers. We thought long and hard about our cache before we placed it, we thought about children, less able bodied cachers (disabled), and the enviroment. So our point is you may not like the micro cache but there are times and places when a micro is best. We have a lot of micro and nano caches here in Finland, you might argue that some of the locations could possibly host a bigger size, this might mean affecting the local enviroment, and that would be wrong. Urban caches, micros and nanos maybe placed with such things in mind, they may be trying to cater for families who are unable to get out into the countryside, they maybe placed with less able bodied persons in mind, also as has been mentioned children are not able to do long treks over rough terrain. So before you go complaining about caches, think about others. This is a sport/game that should have something for everyone, just because you dont like something does not mean that others will not like it. Please try and remember this is an international site, and think how this all looks to visitors from other countries. As for us we are looking forward to a few days happy caching in Surrey between 27th Sept and 1st Oct. Peace and Happy Caching
  22. It does not seem to have been mentioned here but you could also try GeoCaching live this is free but only downloads five caches unless you are a premium member.
  23. Although we are also in the Tampere area, we do not see that as a problem, you can never have too many offers to take up where others might be busy with real life things. So Nosfera also offer their services to visiting cachers, Mr Nosfera is English, Mrs Nosfera is Finnish and fluent in English.
