Welcome!!
I'm new to caching too. (15 finds, started at the end of July).
The first few finds were really difficult for me because I didn't have a clue what I was looking for, and in some cases where. Yes, I have a GPS. In one case it directed me to a sign in the middle of an empty parking lot. I stood looking at that sign, and around that sign, and 10-20 feet in an ever widening circle from that sign looking for this mysterious cache. My son moved one thing on the sign and found the cache. He was not bound by my self-imposed restrictions.
I guess what I'm trying to say is....The lessons your parent taught you about leaving everything in it's place, don't touch what doesn't belong to you etc, doesn't work in Geocaching. Move things, touch stuff, bring gloves if you don't want to get your hands dirty (or if you're afraid of creepy crawlies like me) :-)
The caches that I've found so far are generally similar. Microcaches have been old film canisters, travel sized pill bottles, almost always covered with Camoflage tape. Small caches have been snap lock topped containers, similar to the ones you can purchase from Geocaching.com.
In many cases, reading past logs has helped immensely. Once you're at the site, reading the logs, something will fit, and help you find the cache.
Hope this info helps.
BudgieByrd :-)
