  1. It looks like you weren't the only one to get your log deleted. I usually just hit the IGNORE button and move on. One smiley isn't important. In fact....I have a couple of hiders that I just skip hunting ALL of their hides. I suggest you log again and again....once a day.........until the cache owner gives up
  2. Sometimes when you click on the Garmin page to buy stuff, they send you to amazon.com. Since it's a direct link, you should be ok. I haven't tried your specific item yet, but they sent me there. And....you can get the part number and search amazon by that number. I'm like you.... I get lots of stuff that doesn't work quite right. Then I drive down to Bestbuy and purchase it.
  3. I have used the 62S with 2000 geocaches on one file, and it works quickly and accurately. I use the new 1000 cache queries.........just erase the 500 number in the limit square and type in 1000. I load a couple files into gsak and then download the combined file from there, into the Garmin 62S. Perfect ! Logs........you get 5 logs per querie from geocaching.com . You can dump them into gsak, and do that over again to grab an additional pile of logs from geocaching.com . That's how I get more than 5 logs in each geocache. Also....it grabs YOUR log...if you made one on that geocache. It's great to see MY own DNF log
  4. If they spent the time to email you, they obviously can't find that geocache. I'd answer their question. If you see them at an event later on, I'm sure you can strike up a conversation, and possibly make a new friend.
  5. I always bring a small mirror and a pair of tweezers. As a backup, I bring a tiny flashlight and some spare batteries.
  6. Once.... we did a group speed caching trip in Palm Desert. It was about 10 vehicles, all attempting to drive really close to a desert hide, grab it, sign it, and jump back in the vehicle to head for the next one. We tried to do 6 caches in a row.....on opposite sides of a wide street.....with no traffic on it (dead end in the desert). The toughest part was attempting to get your vehicle out of the giant pile of geo-mobiles that were in a giant clump surrounding the cache. We had tons of fun. So.... don't make it so serious. Bring a camera and take some alien pics. Bring some fun friends..... and if you are the grumpy one in the group.... leave yourself at home.
  7. I think the most useful data fields on the GO TO screen (the one with the arrow) are: Distance to final Accuracy Time of day If you are at zero, and your accuracy is less than 10 feet, and you cannot find the geocache..........then you should check the time of day and see if it's time for lunch. Many times when I'm hungry, I can't seem to find the cache.
  8. We have over 600 caches within 10 miles of our house.....but I refuse to hike to them.
  9. I had that.... I ended up with a big pointer, and a little pointer, on the page. (no one wants a little pointer ) I think I right clicked on the compass page and changed the data fields........after I did what was posted up above.
  10. There is no such thing as a World Record........... oh no.....we've gone full circle.
  11. I personally don't agree with the method that is being tagged as the "Travelling Method" of cheating geocaching. and... I don't care what the guidelines say........nor will I argue about them. so......... Let's add a couple of new topics to the conversation................ - It's a social event - When you are part of a team, and the team is having fun, and the team wants to cheat.........then.......you should start a massive fight in the car, and refuse to play the game their way. Obviously, unless you are gonna win a car, or get shot,..........it doesn't REALLY matter. I have been emailing those who have made the awesome Alien highway run. Everyone - had fun. Everyone will remember this event for the rest of their lives as a 'significant event'. Most- of the participants did some type of travelling or moving of SOME caches. Some- used a method I will call "Leapfrogging".... Multiple cars found alternating caches. Few- committed to the Puritan method, of Finding each cache, and logging a team name, and putting it back. NONE- had the entire team sign the logsheet individually. While I agree with the Puritan method, I have personally witnessed others leapfrogging past us as we cached. It's not a big thing........to me.
  12. Thank you!!!! I was sooo tired at the end of the 24 hour run (which took 30 hours), that I was spraying myself in the face with a water bottle to stay awake.
  13. um....yes.....maybe On my arrow screen, I have the distance to final, the accuracy, and the battery power, and one more thing that I can't remember...perhaps the cache name or the time of day. Just don't ask me how I got them there....lol
  14. Hey....it's the forums ! We are supposed to discuss things, and ask questions. I for one LOVE to see all the records that geocachers make up and achieve. So keep posting them. I'm not interested at all in the rest of the gobble-de-gook.
  15. I think I CHANGED the names FROM something TO something. So all the ALIEN caches get named whatever I pick.... Alien to Aln.......or something like that. But I forget the filter.
  16. Yes.... somewhere. I have erased the first part of a series of names. so an entire series of caches can have the first part eliminated automatically....but I forget how I did it. There is a %smartname code also. It will truncate part of the name to make them different.
  17. I'm not all that scientific with my testing. Without WAAS, the arrow wanders around near gz, and the distance to go is bouncing around. The accuracy is around 11 or 18 feet, and the distance to go is around 0 to 15 feet....and moving around. When I turn on the WAAS, the Garmin 62S version 2.8 settles in right away, and doesn't swing around. It seems much more accurate....and consistant. Also, the accuracy is in the 4 to 8 foot range (on the displayed accuracy). We don't spend more than a minute or so at each geocache, and we need the unit to point AT the geocache quickly. With WAAS on....it seems to do just that.
  18. All the alien caches are on top of the ground.....with a flat rock on them.
  19. On my Garmin 62S, the WAAS lock seems to be much more accurate than just the normal mode alone. I'm quite certain that your location will make a difference. Since I'm in Los Angeles, it is a definite difference.
  20. ........... however.... when you do a longer route, and you max out the number of geocaches..... the program kinda randomly picks the geocaches up to the max number. So.... it could mess ya up, because a few caches will be missing here and there.
  21. Hey, ventura_kids... Is this a confirmation that you did not shuffle the containers/logs during your 1157-find numbers run? If so, then you may still have the geocaching record. Aha!!! This will serve as confirmation that a REAL WORLD RECORD DOES EXIST !!!! Ummm, did you intentionally not answer the question? Yes. I'm attempting to stay on topic. This thread is about the "newest" world record.
