  1. Don't do it. However..... don't worry about how others play the game. Just have fun.
  2. Hmmm.... I'm not familiar with a 400.....but.... on most garmins there is a MARK button. Hit that and then use an arrow or direction key to get into the Latitude and Longitude field. Perhaps they will have a cable and a laptop to quickly download the geocache into your gps.
  3. ....and I'm quite certain the caches you have found were more memorable also. I'm impressed with those who find a hundred caches in the forests in one day. I'd be DNF-ing most of those. So congratulations to everyone who accomplishes their own personal best !
  4. We did have one group years ago that just wrote on the outside of the containers with a marker....but that was years ago. I've seen many variations of "logging in". (Stickers, stamps, pen, ....even some people who just dropped tiny papers with their signatures on them). A common method around here is to have a group name on a sticker. We had 4 cachers in one car, and we all saw every cache. Once we got the cache open, and the logsheet out, the closest person would add a sticker to the bottom of the list of signatures. On this crazy road, many of the hides were evident as you drove up. You could see a pile of rocks near a bush. Most of the caches were within 100 feet of the road, and just required a quick jog over to GZ (ground zero). No one got to sleep in the car
  5. I agree !!! We didn't have time to blink. I thought it was impossible too. However..... read some of the stories people wrote on E.T. #001. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...5a-27c3ce5e9905 (I hope I copied the link right) We took a couple of breaks to add gas to the Jeep. We ate in the car while the other 3 of us kept caching. We rotated jobs so we wouldn't go crazy. When we approached a cache that was a couple hundred feet up a hillside, one of us would stay behind and find the closest restroom (behind a bush).
  6. The current record is 1156 finds in one day. I haven't finished with the story write up yet. It was done on Monday, Sept 27th, 2010 by a single car zooming thru the desert. In that car was 4 crazy fast cachers (Foomanjoo, F0T0M0M, and the Ventura_Kids (2)). The 4 of us never stopped caching the entire 24 hours, along the Alien Highway in Nevada. You can see the crazy trail by looking up E.T. #001 thru E.T. #1021 . I think there was a link in a previous post. It's certainly not for everyone. I think I now prefer puzzle caches.
  7. Hmm.... disconnect the cable and try again. Or.... what program are you using? Some programs have an option to search for connected devices.
  8. When I'm out hiking, I leave all my gear in an ammo can in the back of the Jeep.
  9. We have fun proving to ourselves that others cheat. We made it a game. Whenever we are heading out to an area where we know certain " creative modifications of the normally acceptable methods" have occurred, we keep score. Whoever can spot the most caches that were actually NOT found, yet were logged on-line as FOUND, wins. We know who we can gain the most scores from. So... just go have fun.
  10. My overall favorite gpsr is my old reliable Garmin eTrex Legend. There is a newer model Garmin eTrex Legend HCx that has a memory card in it. If you hike, it will work. If you can drive to the cache, it will work. Currently I have a couple of other units that I use ..... but that's not required unless your hobby gets out of control. If you don't want to spend tons of money yet ( you may quit after a year), I'd get one of the Etrex series units.
  11. I just loaded all of California and Nevada..... that's a great improvement from my previous gpsr. I just loaded 1700 geocaches into it too. So far, after a day of testing, I see the software will need a bit of tweaking. Where do we post our suggestions and issues? Does Garmin have a blog for the 62S unit? I'd like to get the accuracy field to be viewable on the compass screen, rather than a second tiny compass. That little second compass serves NO use to me. Overall, it seems to be MORE accurate than my old 60CS was. Once it settles down to zero, I don't need to keep looking at it. The old 60CS would sometimes jump 30 feet or so.
  12. If you had success previously, it's not a baud rate issue. What did you do differently?
  13. We need more details. What program are you getting the waypoint file from? Are you using a serial cable, or one of those USB ones? I think there is a baud rate control on that unit. Have you had any success downloading anything to the unit before?
  14. ....in a parking lot? Perhaps they are Lampost hides..... my favorites!
  15. I actually see 3 types of geocachers. Us - Find caches types Them - Outdoors types Them - Computer types If you are finding caches outdoors with a gpsr, then perhaps you are one of them.
  16. I just bought the 62S and loaded up 1700 caches. I'll be busy for a long while. Gotta go get started....
  17. Yep... Mine seems a bit delayed on some loads. I downloaded from gsak and it looked like nothing was deleted...so I did it again. The second time, the old caches were deleted, but I couldn't see the 1700 new caches I had loaded. So...I downloaded one more time. It looks correct now. I used their website and the DASHBoARd to update my software. It worked the second time. I guess as long as it works when I'm done, ...... I'm going caching.
  18. We averaged 59 caches per day this year. That's because we had a couple of ONE cache days thrown in. A normal day for us is around 100 finds. We've had a couple of very slow days lately.... 50 or 60 finds. It depends on the density around your area.
  19. I updated the macro version and lost the grid (as seen above). I too liked the grid. I also like the # of caches found each day grid. (not sure where that comes from). It looks like the older version of the gsak macro has the grid....but not the newest one.
  20. Yep. There are a couple of things you can do. As you input the cache page, you can disable the cache. You can also send a note to the reviewer. You can also put a note on the cache page saying it is NOT placed yet (in case it gets messed up and posted early.) You can also hold off on activating it until AFTER the event, and just hand out the first coords AT the event.
  21. I'd never figure it out with those directions.... lol I think each step took me an hour or two.
  22. You have to lift the cover on both connectors. They are probably not too waterproof after that. I'd guess they are about the same.
  23. Just look at the names on the list. All those cachers are fun to be out on the trail with. I've been caching with a bunch of them. I'm certain they all had a great time out there. I love that list ! Thanks for posting it.
