  1. The most frustrating thing was driving over 100 miles just to get the only 2 caches that existed. Once we found them, we would go home and wait for someone to hide one more.....
  2. You may want to buy the Citystreets maps for an additional $79 or so. Most units come with just a basemap.
  3. You are doing good so far. Keep spinning. The screen on the oregon/colorado's reflects light quite differently than the 60's do. I just bought the 62S, and some city maps (I hate topo's). I also have a couple Nuvi's ( for the paperless pages), an old 60CS, and a Garmin Legend (great starter unit). We keep the Magellan in the car and don't us it at all anymore. You can never have too many gpsr's.
  4. I would buy the DVD and load them up on the computer. I have ALL of California and Nevada downloaded onto the gpsr. Since I have 5 different gpsr's, I do all my mapping on the computer screen. When I'm ready, I dump the files onto the gpsr's, with either Mapsource or GSAK.
  5. All the caches are on the right side of the road. In many spots there is limited room to pull over, so we just parked ON the road with the blinkers on. We all searched for the cache thru the windows as we arrived. 2 of us called out the distance and where the cache was ...."40 feet directly to the side". The 2 people on the right side of the Jeep jumped out. If they did not yell "got it" within about 10 seconds, then the 2 people on the left side of the Jeep were supposed to help. Normally, by the time I (the driver) pulled the gpsr out of its dash mount, and exited the vehicle, the cache was found. After a bit.... we could rotate jobs and positions (depending on likes and dislikes.....or injuries). We brought those needle nosed pliers to help pull the logsheets out...but they were not needed. You can just shove your thumb in and the log will pop out. Unroll it, sticker it, roll it up, pop it back in, cap it, and you are on your way (after picking up all the tiny signature papers off the ground). 2 people could do it. It's just an endurance run. It's like a marathon....pace yourselves. Try not to get any injuries near the beginning. Keep drinking water. Stop for a picture now and then. Watch out for scorpions, and cactus (we had NO cell phone service in most areas). Remember to have fun.
  6. I love nanos. My favorite ones are the ones that have the magnet on the inside.....so it doesn't fall off when I pull it off the metallic spot. I look silly trying to get it to stick without the magnet on it.
  7. I like the 60S. You can adjust the tracks just like the older model. You can save a couple of your tracks also. EDIT - Oh DEAR.... I meant to type 62S......not the 60S. That one tiny error could confuse people. 62S is the one I have ....with the pretty orange banding.
  8. Try only looking for a geocache that has RECENT finds logged on it. Since we've been doing this for 10 years, there are a bunch of caches that are now covered in bushes out there. Also, check the difficulty rating. Go for some easy ones until you get a better idea of what to look for.
  9. We don't ACTIVATE any geocoin we are collecting. If we want to send a geocoin out to travel, then we ACTIVATE it, and give it a mission.
  10. The Grand Cherokee is much more comfortable for highway geocaching. It has an awesome 4 wheel drive system too. Just the couple of inches of clearance will cause dozens of bruises when trying to enter and exit the vehicle in a hurry at 3am.
  11. OK.... then give me 15 seconds to drive there. We were in a V8 Hemi Jeep. . . and we ran out of gas twice. Actually... I think we hit 40 mph each time before stomping on the brakes. Near the end of the run, when we were low on gas, I tried to stay under 25mph on acceleration.
  12. I wanted to make a quick movie showing how easily we could zoom from cache to cache in less than one minute.....but we were in a bit of a hurry, and no one would slow down for the movie.
  13. Well.... I didn't believe it either. There have been hundreds of geocachers that have been completing the run in nearly the same time..... around 1021 caches in less than a day....so it is possible. I'll show you a picture....but don't tell anyone......ssssssshhhhhh..... You should be able to spot the geocache as you approach.
  14. Go at night. You'll enjoy the heater. Although the temps were in the 90's during the day, they dipped to the low 50's by 2 AM. Bring a couple of bright flashlights....we used those headlamps. The second half of the hides were much tougher at night. Also, watch out for those low sticker bushes. They will stab your shoes, and grab your fingers.
  15. If the cache was carefully hidden with the same brand/type unit as yours.....then you may get down to Zero feet. My normal error is 10 to 20 feet. However... certain hiders are not very good at capturing accurate numbers, and so we expect and find their caches at 40 to 50 feet error.
  16. no. I would do the alien head in the daytime. There are many low cactus and cactus type plants there. However.... Each cache has reflective tape on the holder, and you will be able to spot them easily with a bright flashlight at night. It would be quite safe and scary at night. Remember....it's over 5 miles in total.
  17. The caches were close to the road. We usually just stopped in the road, without even rolling one tire off the edge of the roadway. The highway is rarely travelled by cars....and they seemed to just move over to the opposite side and safely pass by. The edge of the road was mostly deep sand, and slanted. One minute per cache was our goal. Many caches could be grabbed, opened, stickered, and returned to their spot, in less than 30 seconds. We drove to the next cache in about 10 seconds. It was easy to complete each cache in ONE minute.
  18. My favorite one would have to be the very last one....whatever that one was (it's all a blur). I'm currently still trying to log them all (somehow I messed up and have 4 extras in there...dang). It's taken me over 14 hours to log them (cut and paste with field notes).....so far. We drank tons of water and were still thirsty at the end. We slept for about16 hours after it was over....but we still had those buzzy sea-legs for a couple of days.
  19. Yep... I've never been on an endurance run or a marathon yet....and now I don't want to try.
  20. On Sept 27th, 2010 we took a trip out to the Alien Highway in Nevada. Our goal was to find all 1021 ET geocaches in 24 hours (they are numbered E.T. #001 thru E.T. #1021). We only took one vehicle and 4 geocachers. We only drove 165 miles between 2 gas stations, yet we had to add 10 gallons of gas (we brought it with us) Here is a list of past records we found (I've added a few additional records that cachers sent to me). 1157 (24 hrs) - Monday, Sept 27, 2010 - Alamo, Nevada - Foomanjoo, F0T0M0M, ventura_kids 1105 - (1 Day 8:20AM - 6:45PM) - July 31, 2010 - Nevada - FlagMan, devhead, AS73, SD-Weiss, Thunder-4, Ragfoot 1045 ( 1 day) - Nevada - Sept 7, 2010 - Night-Hawk, Featheredfriends, WE4NCS, CacheUMan 1021 - (1 Day) - July 14, 2010 - Nevada - Triple Crown, Duncan!, lulu499, snflwrmh 737 - (1 Day) - July 7, 2010 - Nevada - tite lines 695 (1 Day) - Friday, April 16, 2010 - Nevada\California - legoboyjj, Rain or Shine, ZSteve 566 - March 26, 2010 - Nevada\California - ventura_kids, f0t0m0m, Cachepal 480 - December 28, 2009 - Denmark\Sweden - Picht, Elmbaek 413 (1 Day) - August 29, 2009 - Colorado - ventura_kids, f0t0m0m, EMC of Northridge, CA 409 - May 9, 2009 - Colorado - dndsterns, chefstern, ColoradoOB 315 (24 hrs) - May 18, 2008 - Sacramento, California - Elmbaek, Schuleit, gjensen, Picht, tottommy, Sjanten, Zooor 312 (24 hrs) - May 20, 2006 - Texas - geoPirat, m.zielinski, darth_maul_3, spuchtfink, Cache & Keri 263 (24 hrs) - May 22, 2005 - Jacksonville, Florida - geoPirat, Huskie 246 (24 hrs) - October 24, 2004 - Jacksonville, Florida - CaptDC52, Luke11.9, Zatoichi 240 (24 hrs) - July 4, 2004 - Nashville, Tennessee - The Leprechauns, carleenp 238 (24 hrs) - September 14, 2003 - Nashville, Tennessee - fullct
  21. Since this thread is called 413 geocache finds in one day...... I'll go make a new one for the newest record. I'll call it New World Record - 1157 finds in 24 hours Then we can get moving on the stories about that road.... see ya over there.
