  1. Download a copy of "GSAK". Open the zip file in gsak. Load a macro for downloading to Garmin units. Select your unit on the Garmin macro selection button. Now you can just download ALL the geocaches in a big pile into your Garmin 62S. Once you get the macro installed, it's easy. You'll like this method best.....once you get it working. You can modify all the files in GSAK easily.
  2. We were happy to see this powercaching trail show up in an area where cow poo is piled high, and nothing else. Since most of the caches are within 50 feet of the roadway, any footprints will still remain in the grading along the sides of the roadway. We think this was well planned. Also, we noticed 385 logs on the main cache (E.T. 001), so I'm guessing less than 1000 cachers have stomped over to these caches since June....or was it July. I think the local establishments are happy we are out there. I have seen postings stating that the local hotel is handing out film cans to geocachers when they check out.
  3. Take a reading.... walk away.... use that reading to see how close you can come to the cache. That's it. If you are close.... use those numbers.
  4. I use GSAK to input my geocaches to my Nuvi..... 750. I use a macro that I found in the gsak forums developed for the nuvi, and Garmins POI loader. I also dump the geocaches from GSAK directly into the Garmin 62S I use. This seems to work well...because I don't have to create two separate methods.... I just use GSAK.
  5. Around our area, we all replace messed up logsheets, and post better coordinates if they are bad. No one takes offense to this type of help.
  6. Perhaps the monotony of the trail was affecting their driving. On those caches, we left the vehicle ON the highway. The only time we moved off the edge of the tar was when a vehicle was approaching from behind us (on our side of the road). Some caches were up to 70 feet away from the road edge. We hiked over to those.
  7. We set the 1157 geocache finds in 24 hours record using a Garmin 62S. We only had it for a couple of weeks. We used the field notes function in geocaching dashboard mode. The unit is quite capable. I love the ability to see the cache pages, the logs, and the hints. The software glitches will probably be an ongoing improvement process, similar to the 60. I'd buy it....oh wait, I already did.
  8. I always just yank the cable. No issue so far. However....when I download POI's from GSAK...then I carefully click on the eject drive icon in the lower right bar.
  9. It's real. It's a World Record ! It's not supposed to be simple. It's supposed to be nearly impossible. Now where did I put that YouTube video of geocachers finding and logging a cache in 45 seconds?
  10. We don't do that. We've had offers from the cache owners. I just thank them and tell them that if we head over there later....we will find it. If not, then we will find a different one. A FOUND is a find. We log tons of DNF's.
  11. ....and.... It's probably the same on the Oregon....but... while at an event, they handed out a list of 12 new caches to go find. I entered them by hand into the 62S as waypoints. Is this the best way? I would like them to have geocache treasure chest icons, and act like the POI geocaches I put in previously. Is that possible...I didn't see a geocache treasure chest icon in my choices?
  12. 2.7.... me too. When I click on NOT ATTEMPTED, and then say find nearest, it still picks the one I decided not to attempt. It would be seconds faster if it went to the next closest cache. Also....I keep forgetting that I already tried to find a cache (added field notes), and I do the very same thing again (2 sets of field notes for one find). Perhaps they need me to come down there and help them fix the software. Where do I sign up to help? Who do I contact?
  13. Perhaps once they open it for my Jeep I'll be there too.... I just need a key for that giant gate....
  14. We've done this silly marathon 24 hour run thing at least 3 times now. Plus, we've done many 100 + cache days. Each time we say it's the last one we do....and then we do another. This Alien highway was a fun epic journey thru the desert. It had many different types of terrain. It had many different types of animals. It had many different types of weather too ! This type of crazy marathon caching may not be your cup of tea, ...but it looks like there have already been hundreds of geocachers that have enjoyed this Alien highway. We should thank those crazy geocache hiders that made this epic journey available to cachers from all over the world.
  15. In our area.... we would welcome anyone doing our cache maintenance. Of course.... most of us hang out together and see each other at local events. 1 - If it's a crappy leaky container feel free to replace it. 2- I'd read the owners note to see why it was disabled. If it needs a dry log sheet, feel free to replace it.
  16. Great pictures ! It's good to see you aren't damaging the fragile desert too much while powercaching in the tar-ish pull out.
  17. So.... I have lots of things to tell Garmin.... but Where do we report these bugs at?
  18. You'll have to drive back to Portland with the unit off....and then turn it on when you get there. (ok, I'm just kidding)
  19. Mine was shutting off with version 2.5 due to extended map panning. Now it locked up once with version 2.6 due to who knows what. I'm guessing by the time we get to version 3.25 all the issues will be worked out...... it's a software thing. Were you scrolling in the map screen? I was logging a find on a cache and pushed the button 3 times before I let it reach the map screen.
  20. When I use gsak, I use different methods depending on the device. Since you know about 1.1 version issues..... you probably already know how to run the Nuvi macro.
  21. Did they work before? Have you ever had them working?
  22. One time we spent over 7 minutes....at ONE cache.
  23. Actually.... the topic of this thread.... is .... a new-ish cacher is embarrased by the other local cachers doing something that seems at first blush to be a silly practice....ie....logging multiple times on one cache....in this case it's an event. It seems logical to me...being a self-proclaimed expert.... that I would not do the same. Cachers with over 10,000 finds should know better.
  24. It's ALL about the numbers ! If it wasn't .... they would have NO reason to do it. One event Attended log would suffice. Therefore, the only reason to do it is to pump up the find count. Those temporary caches don't show up anywhere else...and they are gone the instant the event is over.
