  1. All of our non micro caches are in thick glass jars. We have not had any problems with breakage at all. One is placed up high in a tree and some have expressed concerns about the galss cointainer, but there have been no actual problems. Prior to hiding it I did run a drop test multiple times and again experienced no problems. We used the glass containers because we had a ton of them sitting around and it was convenient. In the future we wll problably use ammo cans or lock n locks because they are about the same price and would eliminate the concerns of others.
  2. Well, I don't know about an entire cache hidden in a coconut, but if you check out Wasteland , you will see that stage 1 is in a coconut.
  3. My wife got me a Mountain Smith Approach Day Pack as reviewed in Today's Cacher. I love it. It holds a Camelbak bladder as well as additional water bottles and a bunch of stuff. The expandable outer pocket will even fit a standard ammo can for hikes to plant a cache. See picture a few posts down. [edited for typos and picture comment]
  4. Actually, you can see your own logs without going to each cache page. Go to this page, and click on any of the bold dates in the calendar. This will bring up the logs you entered on that day. That's cool! I've never noticed that before. Once you are on that page click on All Logs and it will show you all your logs in one long list. That way you don't have to select by day. You still have to go into each one individually to read them, but it is a start.
  5. I third Gorilla Glue. But I also second the part about reading the instructions. Pay attention to surface treatment and curing times.
  6. Just looking for some opinions, preferably with reasons behind the opinions. I came up with a challenging cache idea. It is a multi stage cache with a story line and each stage along the way requires the solving of a puzzle to find the coordinates for the next stage. I will put out some good prozes for those that successfully complete the mission. The down side is that these are difficult puzzles and it is not reasonable to assume that people will be able to complete the entire series in one day because of the time that will be necessary to solve the puzzles. So I was wondering what people thought was better. To go ahead with this cache, or to abandon the whole story line and just put out 5 individual caches. That way all the work required to solve the puzzles could be done before heading out. Kyle Team Armadillo
  7. If it will provide power for the gps and a cd player and a game boy and a psp, I could get my kids to carry it.
  8. I agree with your asessment. I haven't seen too many hints that are useless, but many fall under the category of making it too easy. I have tried to balance on that edge with many of my clues, but it is hard and I often fall off the edge one way or the other. I have received a few complaints from people that my hints weren ot helpful enough. All I can say is that they make sense to me when I write them and only trial and error and feedback from the finders lets me know if they are on the edge or too far in one direction or the other.
  9. I just looked and I still have an edit button available for my first log form over a year ago. Did you go into the log and view it on its own page?
  10. Go to Hide and Seek a Cache. Om the right hand side in the list of documents you can download, under English(micro) is a doc called 132 logs doc. This should be what you are looking for. I think I did this right
  11. The boxer had every right to get upset. It was an error in judgement on my part. I admitted that immediately to myself and them. In my eagerness to use a great location I made a very bad decision. I am sorry and I have apologized repeatedly. There is absolutely no reason not to have discussed it with the boxer first to see if she was OK with it. I don't know how I can make it more clear to everyone involved that I know I made a mistake and that I feel terrrible. I think it is obvious how others feel about this issue. I should not have placed the cache there. It was rude and inconsiderate and thoughtless. But let us be clear. If all Flying Dragon wanted to know is others opinion of my error then the post would have stopped here: Everything else in the post is either a misrepresentation of the facts of the actual occurrence or a personal attack on me and my family. As for the follow up... That is wonderful. I welcome everyone to join these forums, letterboxers, geocachers, anything. It is a great opportunity to learn many things. I know I have learned a lot from these forums as well as the letterboxing groups of which I am a member. But I again restate my first point. At no point did I suggest that anyone was trying to hide their identity. It is obvious you were not hiding as you point out. My reference to the fact was that you found or heard about my post in reference to this issue and joined specifically to respond to what I had said. You did not join for the educational experience, although I hope that you will continue to read these forums now that you have joined. As you pointed out, everyone can learn something. The problem is sorting out the gems of knowledge from the obfuscation and negativity. Again, I don't know how many times I am expected to state that I was wrong. This thread is about the attitudes of cachers and boxers towards each other, let us get it back on topic or end it. Flying Dragon, feel free to open a new thread about placing caches near exisitng letterboxes to get as many opinions as you like. I am sure they will all agree with me that I was wrong, I don't know how much more than that you need.
  12. Wow this simple question is turning into a whole new level. The cache Flying Dragon references is the cache that I mentioned in my first post to this thread. And the cacher he is referencing is me. Flying Dragon is a friend of the letterboxer who placed the box involved. I find it interesting to note that he apparently created a geocaching identiity strictly for the purpose of making the above post. I acknowledged that I should have asked the boxer first before placing the cache, simply out of respect. That was my mistake and I appologized for it. I have also offered to move the cache and change the description. It has been three days now and I haven't had the time to do it yet. The boxers email was very polite. I feel my return email was also, and object to the characterization of it as a rant. I very politely explained why I felt the box and cache could coexist. This was a plea to be allowed to keep the cache in place as I feel it is an excellent location. I explained my personal experiences with the two communities thus far in an attempt to reassure her that cachers would treat her box with the same respect that boxers would. Apparently my defense of geocachers and my personal stories made it appear as if I were blaming letterboxers or saying one group was better than the other. I did not mean it this way and am bery sorry if that is how it came across. Finally I personally resent the accusations made at the end of the email. My family and I consistently replace boxes and caches exactly the way they were found. I would never leave a box or cache lying out exposed and have even discussed with others the need to make sure that is not happening. It is possible that when we were new and inexperienced we made mistakes and did not properly rehide a container. If that is the case I wish that it had been pointed out then, as the learnign curve would have improved. I can safely say nothing like that happens any more. Hopefully any further discussion on the specifics of this issue can take place between me and the other people involved rather than here in this forum. I am not going to argue the other points in his post in this forum as it is a waste of everybody's time and also off-topic. (Edited to change potential misunderstandings and clarify tone)
  13. No. In this area. most Hybrid Caches are also listed on Letterboxing.org as a letterbox. There is no problem with cross posting. But, once you list it on ground speak you must adhere to the proximity rule, whereas with letterboxes there is no such rule. Since there is no approval process for letterboxes, often the hybrid will get found and logged by multiple letterboxers before the listing is published for geocachers.
  14. Odly enough I am dealing with this issue right now. My cache Armadillo's Might Be Under Cover Spies is right near a letterbox. I mention the letterbox in my cache description and ask cachers not to mistake it for a geocache. Every cacher has found the letterbox first as it is a very easy hide. In addition it was found in bad shape by one of the first cachers on the scene. Since then at least two cachers have emailed the owner of the box directly to let her know that it needs maintenance. Her response to this was to email me and ask me to move my cache. She says she never had any problems with her box until after I placed my cache there. So maybe it is just a cooincidence, or maybe it is geocachers or maybe the increased activity is attracting muggles. She also told me that the last box she had near a geocache had the stamp taken from it. She doesn't say it in words, but I really felt from the tone of her email that she feels geocachers are the problem. I have found and hidden numerous caches and boxes in this area as I do both activities. I just recently placed a Hybrid cache. My experience has been that the cachers are more communicative, more respectful, and do a better job replacing containers and securing lids. I have lost more letterboxes than geocaches. I think that this will vary greatly from area to area depending upon the individual people. But one thing I think is similar in many areas is the hostility between the two hobbies. This exists, not everywhere, but in many places. The answer I think is education. I don't feel that either group really understands the other, and when this happens there are always problems. Geocachers and letterboxers all need to know about the other activities that are out there and learn to be just as respectful of the other sport as they are of their own. I'm not sure how to make this happen, but I think it is a worthy goal. BTW. I respectfully explained my position to the letterboxer and then acknowledged that her box was in the area first, so that I would move my cache if she still had a problem with it. She responded by askign me to move the cache and take all references to her letterbox off the page. So that iis what I am going to do.
  15. I agree. You can always help people out after they have given it the old college try or add hints to the cache page later to make it easier. I know if I go out a few times and cannot find a cache I will email the owner for a hint. I have placed a number of caches in the last few months. Some have been very easy and others have been harder. One is just evil. And more are on the way. I like having a mix. I also enjoy the ones that are just clever enough to make it challenging but not so impossible that you can't find it. This results, in my opinion in the best logs to read. You also need to remember that the harder and more complicated you make it, teh fewer logs there will be. So if you want your cache to be found a lot make it easy and traditional. If you are OK with less activity go ahead and make it as challenging as you want. So I guess in summary, I say GO FOR IT!!!!! Kyle
  16. Actually, and I hate to burst your bubble, I, and the armadillo we named ourselves after are from IL. Armadillos, they ain't just in Texas no more. So that doesn't quite work.
  17. No this is selected for one waypoint at a time. Your utility is more versatile if you can just solve the parsing problem.
  18. Ooooh, ooooh, do me do me!!!! (And I mean that in the nicest possible way)
  19. I think part of the problem is that the infromation given about logging benchmarks by GC.com says to take a picture from the benchmark itself in each direction. That is why so many do it. Perhaps Jeremy could change that.
  20. Like this guy? "Hello, My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to Die"
