  1. Warren!! HELP!!! I dropped my junior from about waist height & now it won't even turn on! I tried taking the batteries out & replacing them, but no go!!
  2. The Sign: The Reason for the Sign: This was taken while driving in rocky mtn. ntl. park. Left turn = driving very quickly down a mountain!
  3. oooh! I have a kindle 2! didn't think of using it for THIS!! sooooo excited!
  4. ive got the packaging... but not the packing slip! but i know i wouldn't junk it... must...dig...deeper!
  5. well, since husband is a photographer & i LOVE to travel, I want my lil bug to have the same loves!
  6. I'm getting ready to release a TB out into the world... I have to first talk to him about taking candy from strangers & making sure someone holds his hand while crossing the street... and after reading this, I'm hoping he'll get to visit moosely mainers if anything goes wrong... nutty was obviously well cared for! I really want to give him a mission, but I just can't figure out what I want him to do! And I keep hoping to get lucky enough to find a cache with a TB in it (the area we're going to tonight has a cache with one, but, judging from other logs, its not really there). Like someone else said (sorry... forgot who!) I am a newbie, but I promise, I've read everything I could find!!
  7. I'm running XP & my husband & my laptop are vista. As for the type of palm, I found the box!! Its not in there, of course....but, its a IIIe. He said they have one at his office that just sits there, but it doesn't have a charger! Its the same type as the one we have, but, our charger is probably in the same spot as the palm! And completely random, but I'm oh-so-excited! I got the little acorn, keyring cache thing in the geocaching.com store. I was planning on a different use for it, but, it holds 4 AAA batteries perfectly! w00t! Into the caching kit it goes!!
  8. too funny! when i click your link, it redirects to what I posted & I see the side by side! hope this helps... the left side is the basic.
  9. My first find was in another state! I tagged along on a hunt during a family reunion!
  10. https://www.geocaching.com/Membership/Default.aspx that should show you a side-by-side comparison of what you'd gain by upgrading (I know I look at it constantly!)
  11. I guess I already consider myself "paperless" since my little junior just brings up the 20 closest caches to wherever you turn it on at. But, I have no idea what I'm looking for til I get home & go to enter them on here!
  12. So, somewhere deep in the basement lies a palm pilot (purchased around 2000, but, that's as specific as I can remember). I'm trying to figure out if its worth digging it out, if it'd be better to find a newer one on an auction site, or, if I need one at all! (Right now, I'm feeling technologically deprived, since I just have my little Geomate jr!) I don't have premium membership yet (hopefully it'll be a sooner-than-later upgrade!), but, since I'm just getting started, I guess I'm wondering what all you guys use your palm's for! I hope I'm not being to vague in my question. I know everyone under the sun is watching pennies right now, I don't really want to spring for a new one (well, i do! but, I'm trying to be realistic!). Especially since I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it once I do get one in my hot little hands!! Thanks...
  13. Didn't anyone call in to point out that they were the ones sitting & watching what goes on in a parking ramp?? And yet, the caller was the loser... "pot? meet kettle."
  14. I believe that you are the first person we've seen here that actually got started by using the Geomate Jr. What got you interested, and how did you come to find out about geocaching.com? One of our main concerns (some of us, I should say) with the Jr. was that those that bought it would not know about this site, and hence not know about the ethics of caching and trackables (and perhaps not even logging their finds here) So I think many of us would be interested in your story. Well, to make a long story short, I asked a question about "what is all this..." There was a cache a few hundred feet away from where we were sitting, so she showed me! She used her blackberry, but told me about this cool new toy that she'd seen online... pre-loaded caches, saved your finds, etc. So, I started trolling this site! I think I clicked every link I could find! I found the 'toy' in the store area, sent her the link asking if that was it- it was! So, since we already have the MIO Knight Rider telling us where to go in the car, I KNEW the husband wouldn't let me have anything that required serious $$. And I liked the simplicity of it... I didn't have to figure out how to load stuff, how to delete, nothing to making the going out there part stressful! And I know that if I don't get it right away, have fun with it right away, or even just start out stressed, I don't go back to it. We use my phone to track what we found & didn't find. The other day when we went out, I just started a new note in my phone & made a on one list & a DNF on the other. Yes, it keeps track of what you've found, but, you can't access the list unless you're outdoors (it just keeps flashing 'gps srch! find clear sky!") (Warren!! Can you fix that?!?!) And I dont have any way of knowing what i didn't find, unless i keep the thing on til I get home (& then we're back to the same problem!). As for your question about ethics & trackables & such... I tried to read as much as i could while I was waiting for my junior to arrive! Part of that is just my personality. I tend to find out about something, get really excited & then fizzle out, where as my husband takes his time to research EVERYTHING & then figure it out. So, I kinda tried to go about this his way, since while $70 isnt THAT much $, its still quite a bit... and I didn't want to make it another gadget i just had to have & then let it end up in a drawer! I know that eventually I'd love to upgrade to something more grown-up (heheh... for lack of a better term?) but, like I said, usually i jump in with both feet, so, this time I'm going about it baby-steps style! Hope that answers your question a bit! I tend to ramble & stop making sense about half way thru my posts, so, sorry if I did that!!
  15. I was just pondering this sort of topic! I was thinking I do it sorta backwards... we've only gotten to go out twice, and we have the geomate jr, so, no pre-programming happens here! the first time, we just sorta turned it on & hit what was closest to us... yesterday, we decided to go to a specific lake, so, hubby looked up the area, so we'd have an idea of what we were looking for... then, since the junior tells ya up to 20 nearest caches, we just kept walking the path, scrolling thru the list for whatever had the shortest distance! i've put in the address of my work, & I know there's a few really close, so, one of these days i'll try in that area!
  16. we went out yesterday... found 4, & we had for 4dnf's. Considering I've got a total of 6 finds, 1 of which doesn't count since it'd been archived, but, the junior still thought it was there, and 1 with someone else using her blackberry & me not having a clue what was going on, I'm pleased!
  17. I guess that pocket queries aren't really something I need to worry about for now, since my geomate is the only piece of techno-gadgetry I own...
  18. so... i have a question... What's the difference between what the geomate jr does & a pocket query?
  19. I'm not sure what you are referring to. Do you mean the date that is displayed when you mark a geocache as found? Or the date that is displayed at start up. I believe the date shown at startup is the date of the database version. yeah, i figured that out a bit later!
  20. Since I'm a newbie on this site, as well as to the world of geocaching in general, I'd like to say that I've been very pleased with everything on this site, from the FAQ's, to the forums! My husband runs a car website. We're at 17898 members! (For a mainly mid-90's, low-end sports car!) & so I can say first hand that running a forum like this one is no picnic!! In fact, on our site, I ask him daily if we can start to administer IQ tests before we authorize new members!! (no, seriously... its that bad!). We used to simply allow anyone who registered to be a member, but now, with spam-bots, bitter ex'es (its a car site! some teenage girl stalked her ex-boyfriend all over the forums!), etc, we now have to manually approve each & every new member! We've talked about implementing a system like the premium memberships here... we just can't seem to figure out how to make it work for us! Kudos to the mod's on Groundspeak! It's hard to keep the peace, remain diplomatic & not hit that ban button every time someone gets their knickers in a knot!
  21. Hi, If you determine how to un-found a cache please share the information with the rest of us. ( I mistakenly mashed a button and declared a find. No, i didn't figure that out... i forgot to take the little cheat sheet with me & I was pokin' those poor buttons left & right til I finally got it marked as found! I only have 1 smiley face....
  22. some of you are so creative/amusing with your names & explanations! Anyway... I've used this name online since the late 90's... What I thought it meant then & what I'm pretty sure it means now aren't the same... but, it keeps life simple to stick with my early mistakes! (btw- knight2000... my husband is OBSESSED!! with knight rider! we even have the mio knight rider gps! I knew your name before I even found this thread!)
  23. first time out with mine today... First cache (stupidly forgot to pay attention to the #'s!) didn't find, but, it was in a really random area... 2nd cache, found where it used to be (marked as found in the junior... got home, found out the cache had been archived). 3rd cache, didn't find, gave up cuz husband was cranky! (again, stupidly forgot to pay attention to which cache we were hunting for!!) All in all, it was a decent test run. Now I wanna try & figure out where we were on #1 & #3 so I can go back & try again!!!
  24. Warren, I have a question... mine is a month off for the date! It thinks its April! Is there anyway for me to change this? (Not that it matters, really.... just gonna bug me!)
  25. i ordered mine on monday, from rei... said it'd be here the 2nd, but it came today!!!! its soooo cute! can't wait to get out & try it!
