  1. Thanks for the advice! It's irritating in my area because it seems like EVERY cache is a micro. Also they ALL seem to be in urban areas that have people crawling around. I have no problem with going at night, I just simply CAN'T because I have a toddler. I can't go geocaching after 6-7 pm...LOL Anyway I guess practice can make you better
  2. I'm new but I already have an irk. Most of the bigger caches I've found have been full of junk, and I mean expired coupons (from 2013) and just trash (IMO). Used erasers, chewed up pencils, business cards etc. I don't get it. A bag full of small toys can be bought at the dollar tree so what gives? I think that's perfectly acceptable swag.
  3. I looked for a cache the other day that was on private property. The people had a fairly long driveway but I could see their house. I didn't spend any time there looking (~5 minutes) because I just felt so awkward. I didn't even find the cache and they said it was in plain view. It just wasn't something I felt comfortable with doing.
  4. I feel the same way. I went out caching by myself and out of the 5-6 places I visited, I only found one. I even went back to a place I was before (had to leave then because of muggles) and I didn't find the cache I looked for about a half an hour too. I even got brave and stuck my finger in this fence hole that I thought would contain the cache. I'm deathly allergic to spiders so I have to be somewhat careful.... I even went to a place that was on private property, and had a large cache that was said to be within view. Nope, no dice! My iphone app can be really useful, but then it can be totally worthless it seems. It'll get me close to a cache (I usually start looking when it dings, or gets within 10-20 feet) and sometimes it'll jump from 10 feet to 40 feet within a step. I read the hints and look at the clues and 90% of the time in the comments, it'll just say "easy find" and have no pics whatsoever. Totally discouraging I'm hoping when I get the paid $10 app it'll be a bit easier.
  5. I really want to make a signature item. I thought about buying a load of caribener clips (sp?) and stamping my username in them (well the initials). I really love usable stuff, today in a cache I saw a compass. I am very crafty and can make probably anything so I'm going to have to think about this for awhile.
  6. For someone who waited so long to start, I find these threads a little sad. This is suppose to be a fun hobby. YES there are people who ruin it for others but not everyone is like that. TFTC logs kind of irritate me too but maybe those people don't know to write more? Honestly I don't like reading an entire book in a log but it's nice to see a little narration of the surroundings etc. I have had a lot of fun doing this hobby for free with my husband and toddler. Just the other day, I found a cache in an area that I probably would have never found before. We were on vacation in Delaware and there just happened to be caches in the area. I saw the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. I think some people think of geocaching as "treasure hunting" as in they'll find treasure like gold or something. They don't understand that the true treasure is the cache, no matter how small it is. I know I only have 6 finds so far (I have to get going!) but I have loved every second of my searching.
  7. Actually, it has nothing whatsoever to do with geocaching. He is simply hanging an envelope with cash (spelled cash, not cache) and posting hints to it. I'm not so sure that you really heard that it was placed in "geocaches". More like letterboxing... follow the clues. If some newsfolk said geocaching, they don't know what they are talking about... but what's new in the newsworld, anyway? I could have sworn a news station said geocaching...because it caught my attention and reminded me to look to see if there was an app. Either way, I could be totally wrong and just heard cash or something. 99% of the time, TV is background noise for me.
  8. There will always be ignorant people who "ruin" the hobby. It comes with almost any hobby I think. When I first heard about geocaching, I HAD to do it. The only problem I faced was that I could never afford a GPS. I registered on this site in 2009. I found my first geocache yesterday...5 years later. I was ecstatic when I saw there was an iPhone app. I would always come back and check every few months and just the other day, I found there was a free app so I downloaded it. I asked my husband to join me and we ended up having a lot of FREE fun. I do plan on purchasing the full app and membership when I have the extra funds. I'm a new mother and wife so I'm on a strict budget! Anyway I think that once the newness of the free app wears off, things will calm down a bit. If you don't like who is hiding a cache, just don't go looking for it. Maybe do a bit of research first. Maybe there could be suggestions to make the app very limited like, after you click on 10 caches, you can't click on anymore until you buy the app. I also saw on the news where some guy is hiding money in caches in San Franciso I think. The news also said that it's catching on and is happening all over the place now. I think once ALL this media coverage goes away, people may not be interested anymore. Just a thought and my opinion
  9. I had to look up spent brass and I don't see it as trash, but I'm a pretty crafty person and I would probably make something out of it. I also found a cache the other day that had marbles. I got super excited and I fry them and make jewelry from them. Again, I'm a crafty person. I'm guessing my little mickey mouse trade for the marble wasn't appropriate...oh well.
