  1. I might be interested in a springtime attack on these caches and an overnight stay but to attempt this 12 hour hike at this time of year would not be fun IMHO. Even if you left the trailhead at 8 AM, which would mean us north county folk would need to get up at 5AM to make the drive, it would still mean walking back in the dark, cold and tired and then a long drive home. Hate to throw cold water on this hike but I think it might be a bit more to bite off than most of us weekend warrior hikers could chew.
  2. I just checked my options and I am still set up to receive posts when this forum gets posts but I don't get them for some reason. I do get notices from Southwest posts that usually have nothing to do with us hereabouts. So, what say we collect a list of POC email addresses to send to whenever we are thinking of an outing or get together? I will post mine here but am adding spam front and back that you need to remove before saving. I get just so much spam these days I try to avoid more. spamAlan.a@pacbell.net spam
  3. Wow, I can't believe it's been so long since I read and posted here. Like BBB I keep getting knocked off the forums notification and just forget about logging in. I'm up for a POC get together. Whether indoors or out, evenings or weekend day, doesn't matter. I'd be glad to meet on a mountain top somewhere or in a warm restaurant. Whatever. If you're up for a pizza fest waaaayyyy up here in North County I would be glad to put it together and we could bring our newest toys to show and tell plus bring our clever, cute, camoed cache containers (hows that for alliteration?) to demo for all to enjoy. Hope everybody has a happy Thanksgiving. We're thankful, always, that we live here on the central coast and have so much to be thankful for.
  4. I agree, it was a fun hike. I really enjoyed Valery and Erica. I was most impressed with their hiking ability and stamina. I see they spend little time parked in front of the TV. I too was intrigued by the stone seat, Kiva, or whatever. Someone or someones really put a lot of time and effort into that. Thanks, Booboobee and slmslo, for hiking with me and sharing the fun. Where to next?
  5. Well I apologize slmslo, I shoulda checked your profile. Gosh OP, I didn't know you were such a workaholic. Too bad, we would have enjoyed your company.
  6. OK...so as usual I'm looking at this in a rush. So...er...you want to hike to SLO Highest, etc. not from SLO High (or SLO Junior High) but from the Reservoir canyon side? So, hike up Reservoir Canyon, then to the ridge, and back down and around. Is there a loop trail for this? I'm not seein' it. (Not that we always NEED a trail...) Er...ahem... I'm on for Wednesday. See you where ever you say, GeoCats, at 10 a.m. Please e-mail me off list and I'll send you my cell phone number. J/BooBooBee There is a trail to the ridge top from Reservoir Canyon. Pointsaljim hicked it a few weeks ago and he said it is definetely easier than from the H. school side. Plus a good part is in the shade so we can enjoy it more. Pack a lunch for a top of the world picnic. I have not heard yet from slmslo whether he will be there also.
  7. The hike would start at the trailhead at the end of Reservoir Cyn road and looking at Topozone maps the hike is about 1.7 - 2.0 miles to SLO Highest. I would say that if we met at 10AM and hiked to SLO Highest first then did the caches in reverse order (SLO Highest, Sore Thumb, 101 overlook, Cacher's Canyon Peak, Olli, GPSr Blues, and Barking) then you could gauge your time and leave at any time and skip the lower caches to seek out another day. Then you could do the hike and get to your appointment. What say? I'm on for it if you guys are.
  8. Well.... I'd have to ask my boss, he's a slave driver. (Self employed ) If you guys are all for it, maybe Wed. morning around 10-11 to do the hike? It would still be somewhat cool and probably clear at that time. Pack sandwiches and have a SLO Highest picnic?
  9. As far as an urban cache goes I don't know off hand but I suspect that if you followed the creek up or down a ways you would find a mini park along it's path that would work for you. As you can see the forum here is pretty inactive and the POC site is not been updated in a long while. The few of us that seem to keep active log in here once in awhile to let others know what's been going on. Recently OreoPony conducted a geocaching class at Cal Poly for Osher and then the following week she, PointsalJim and Rikki and I led a geohike up reservoir canyon trail. I had placed two caches up there in the spring in anticipation of this class. We then placed a class cache and I see two more caches have been placed further up the trail. I need to go get those two and also find SLO Highest which was a DNF the last time I went up there. Anyone want to do the hike with me next weekend? Rikki and I placed a micro a couple weekends ago in Los Osos. We usually don't like micros but this site is the former site of a cache much liked by many of us. It was placed by the Frozen Dinner Boys and then after a few years got muggled and never replaced. We thought that was a shame so we placed our own there after it was archived and there was not activity by the Frozen Dinner Boys for over a year. Check it out, it is Sweet Springs Nature Reserve Then last week I climbed a trail I hadn't been up before at Cerro Alto and placed two caches. Oreopony did a FTF on the lower one but the upper one is still a virgin. Now that summer is over I hope we see more local action and maybe someone will put together a picnic, pizza meet or a hike to participate in.
  10. Just a quick follow up on the camo tape. I found some at Miners Hardware (Atas) and it works great. I have made up half a dozen cache containers and will be putting some out in the next few weeks. Indeed, I just put a new puzzle cache out in Los Osos that is an easy puzzle to solve and fun for the whole family. (Be sure to bring some mosquito repellant.) I noticed a few weeks ago that GC.com changed the mapping program and didn't think about it much but tonight I wanted to sellect just certain caches to view like you used to could but this map program doesn't have that capability. Is the only way to do that now is create a pocket query? Or is there something I'm missing?
  11. I agree, some caches are really clever (difficult) camos. I know Rikki and I are not big on micros and we don't have young kids. I see the purpose of micros in an urban setting where you would have a hard time hiding a regular cache but when you have a whole woods to hide one in I don't understand the reason for a micro. If we see a cache is a micro we usually just avoid it. On another subject, at the last get together camo tape was discussed and someone said it could be purchased at the Army surplus store in SLO. I stopped there today and they said they haven't had any for over a year. They suggested Miners Hardware and I just called there and they said they do carry it. I'l pick some up this weekend and let you know what I find out.
  12. Well, we're off to Minnesota for 8 days on Friday. We're going to try to do some touring, fishing, visiting, ride a paddlewheeler, geocache, attend a BBQ and relax. I have no idea how much relaxing we can fit in around all the other things. Maybe I can combine fishing and relaxing. Yah sure, I t'ink dat'll work.
  13. We're in for the flashermob. I'll do the logger thing and Rikki can be the assistant logger.
  14. Last weekend I got to go to L.A. to a granddaughter's college graduation and while there did a bit of caching near the West Covina area. I looked for area the hike in that had interesting caches. This was harder than you'd think because so many caches down there are micros. Even where they could easily place regular caches they put boring, no thought micros. I don't know about you but I find micros not of interest for the most part unless they are a clever hide in an urban location. Of these I can only think of a few I liked. And if you have younger kids along, micros are of little interest to them. OP, how's the mob thing going? Jim, how many GPSr s do you have these days. We'll need as many as we can get for the OLLI class.
  15. I would suggest some research. This should get you started in the right direction: Hidden Mars Messages Found Right you are. Spirit, I couldn't guess that one. I should'a Googled it. Thanks
  16. Rik & I are going to Minnesota next month and probably do a little caching while there. In my searches for caches there I found one that is a puzzle cache 1/2 a mile from my family home. Maybe one of you can figure it out because I'm stumped. Take a look and see if you can figure it out. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...dd-810f51cf65f3
  17. Date held. Flash mob what?? Do I have to flash something? I haven't flashed in decades. BTW. what is the dates for OLLI?
  18. Hey, are we POCs going to get together sometime? There's a new cacher interested in meeting the group and some old ones that have never been able to attend a function. What say, a picnic somewhere, a feast of pizza, an evening of fine dining in tux and cocktail dresses? Yeah right. Me who's never worn a tux and am afraid my suit would fit more than a bit snug. So what say, anyone got any ideas?
  19. Yep, still got it going. It was our first cache, very close to our home and in a great location. So yes, I will keep it going. New caches are posted each week but I feel that the sport has lost some of the activity of a few years ago. Oreopony and I were just discussing that a while ago. But some of us are still active and encouraging the sport. OP is doing a course on Geocaching this summer for OLLI and Jim and I will be helping her. OLLI sponsors short classes for seniors and retired folk. We did one last summer in Irish Hills. I will be placing a cache or two as soon as I get my replacement GPSr.
  20. Oh, I see my error. The default files did not list .loc. I had to select that. Uffda
  21. We are going on a vacation soon in Minnesota and I wanted to find some good caches in the area we are staying. I was told about a list of favorite Minnesota caches that I saved as a .loc file. I want to look at this file using Google Earth but can't find a way to import it or display it. Google Earth FAQs tell how to download from your GPSr but that I already know. Does anyone have a way to disply .LOC files in Google Earth?
  22. BTW, with all the smart cachers in this forum maybe someone can answer a question. I want to Google Earth a .loc file but can't see how to load it in to GE. The GE FAQs tell you how to load from your GPSr but I want to look at a .loc file from my PC. Any ideas?
  23. Friday the 13th wasn't a bad day for me but the Friday before was not the best, let me tell you. I got done with my work early on Friday and so decided to walk Reservoir Canyon trail to check where to place a cache or two for an upcoming OLLI class that Oreopony is teaching and I am helping out. I had a good hike. Did a bit of exploring and a lot of dodging poison oak. (We'll have to inform the students about the heavy growth of p.o. all along the trail.) I found a great spot for a cache and placed it, being sure to take a bunch of waypoints to average. After hiking out I met a guy at the trailhead who is a mushroom harvester. He pays a percentage to the farmers land that he harvests and watches out for poachers. I guess at the price these mushrooms fetch that poaching is an ever present problem. Anyway, after yakking for half an hour or so I had to get home and zoomed on out of there. Only when I got home did I find that I had lost my GPSr! I drove back and explored the trailhead by flashlight. (Bothering some smoochers with my searching.) But the Garmin 60CS was gone. I had left it on top of my cruiser and it had to have fallen off right there when I turned around. I went back in the daylight also but found nada. I placed a lost ad in the TT but no calls. So, after a bit of research I found that Garmin has discontinued the 60CS and sells the 60CSX but I don't need the extra capabilities so I bid on a few on ebay and today got a brand new 60CS for $225. So soon I will have my GPSr loaded and ready to rock once again.
  24. Well, it was not a hoard of hikers as we figured it might turn out. It was a brief meet and greet with Moose mob and then Jim, Riley and I set off for a fun afternoon hike. It was a gorgeous day with a bit of marine layer over by the Pacific so the ocean was not always in view but most of the Morros were. Riley started out the hike by running in front of us, behind us, exploring up and down, hither and thither but after a bit she got pooped and stayed near. Jim brings about 3-4 bottles of water for her and 1 for himself. After about a leisurely 2.5 hour hike to the caches we took a short snack break and then hiked about 1.75 hours back. (Downhill sure makes it easier.) Riley was sure glad to see the cars while Jim and I were just happily tired and looked forward to getting home, having a cold one and a hot shower. All in all another fantastic day in paradise. Jim and I agree, that this is the best area in the world to live in.
  25. I just went back through these messages and see that Chaosmanor who started this thread has not said that he/she is coming. So maybe we'd better bring our own cache to place in case he/she/they are a no show. Got any good ones lurking in your garage? Or I could place the one I showed you today.
