    Info from here

Still non the wiser. But I'm making a list of those that don't post a guess and so by process of elimination I'll get them eventually.

Whoops, then they'll post here as a bluff.. Aha, so the next person who posts on here must be them.

Sorry, it's been a bad day at work, including BT killing my fibre connection.

  2. My 2p worth????

Ask them nicely to stop the e-mailling, tell them that you are going to keep the caches as they are, keep the caches as they are.

If they continue, report the abuse, that's what the system is for.

MO caches are legitimate, it's all up to you.

Depending on your mail reading software you could use the 'ignore' feature or have messages from a particular address junked automatically.

  3. I can't remember why, but some time ago someone asked about the rise of caching in the uk.

I have used the date of each cachers first find to calculate the following.

Sorry the formatting is 'odd' but the forum software looks like it accepts TAB when pasting in from excel, but when viewing it these are stripped out, so I had to manually lay it out with dots.

  4. Excellent response kbootb, almost all of which I agree with. The exception is: "as they are both trying to achieve the same aim, upset people so they leave the sport and put an end to caching."

I think you give them more of an agenda than they deserve. I believe they just want the attention. Like spoilt brats.

Oh yes - and if this is a sport - just who am I in competition with? I thought it was a pastime.

    Sorry - different discussion.

Yes, I agree, perhaps I gave them too much there. I was fed up with seeing the same behaviour 3 times in a day, at work, then when I was meant to be having an enjoyable evening and then on the forums.

Perhaps their intention is not to kill off caching, but then again I doubt that the local kids that have just trashed my cache intend to do the same to all the thousands of caches in the country. But keep doing this and slowly people will get fed up and drift away.

When I first started caching it was, for me. quite solitary. Just going out finding boxes and logging the finds. No real interaction with other cachers. Then I got into the forums. If they continue in their current unpleasant state I'll probably return to my former existence. I'm sure the majority of cachers don't read the forum and are quite happy in their blissful ignorance of the shenanigans that go on round here.

  5. At the swimming pool last night a bunch of teenage boys were doing their level best to be annoying. 'Do that once more and you'll be thrown out'. So they did it again. So the management tried to go through with their threat. But of course they were on a loser. It's impossible for 3 lifeguards to physically extract 6 teenagers from a pool and eject them.

Why did the kids pay good money, spoil everybody's evening in the pool and deliberatley get excluded?

Some people just get their kicks from seeing people squirm, seeing people in 'authority' helpless, seeing people's innocent enjoyment ruined.

Extreme examples would be happy slappers which at the far end of the spectrum turn into video violence even including death.

My feeling is that these actions, and those of many trolls are all part of the same spectrum of getting enjoyment out of the discomfort and pain of others, particularly those with some stamp of authority.

Guess it's because part of my job is supporting failing teachers that I see the behaviour from teenagers just about every day.

Trolls, in my opinion are as low down the evolutinary scale as the examples I have quoted above.

Invariably people get hacked off with their activities and leave the group, and I've seen this in many internet based hobbies that have newsgroups/forums etc.

So, in my opinion, a troller on here is as welcome as a cache trasher, as they are both trying to achieve the same aim, upset people so they leave the sport and put an end to caching.

Harsh perhaps - but I get seriously fed up with trolls.

However, just to make it clear, I have no problem with people that air controversial or minority views and post them under their own name. I'm all for discussion and hate the idea of 'conformity' and toeing any party line for the sake of it.

  6. I also have a number of ISPs for a variety of reasons, plus a few non isp e-mail accounts e.g. gmail. None of those are experiencing any mail delays. Volumes of spam are very high but I think it's long if it takes 30 seconds.

I also have lots of gmail (googlemail) invites if people need them.

On a related topic. I was thinking of creating another website, using space not provided by my ISP. Anybody know a good company that can provide webhosting and domain name services ata reasonable price?

  7. Work life - education adviser. Trying to improve the teaching skills in schools that are not doing too well. Mostly in IT departments.

Outside work. Music, play bass in one band - for money so I guess that makes it professional, guitar in some others but these are for fun. Teach a bit of guitar in the evening. Also can't resist going to see bands. Elana James and her previous band the Hot CLub of Cowtown are my absolute favourites. But also partial to Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Kaiser CHiefs were good a few weeks back... I wonder if anybody out there shares these tastes.

One daughter at uni studying medicine and the other about to take her GCSEs.

Interested in flying, mostly gliding, but having two daughters killed that off. Not an avaiation 'nut' though. Can't identify a plabe to save my life, but love flying them. Just bought my wife a paragliding trip. Can't wait to watch that.

Like a bit of photography, but again, not too serious. More than just snap shots but not as deep as SLR and loads of lenses (I had one but got fed up carrying it).

As with most people here I like being out in the open air. Like a bit of wildlife and can tell a robin from a blackbird but couldn't spot a warbler.

Also like the occasional kayak, dingy sail, caving trip, abseil (but not the climbing). Skiing, but not enough to buy skis.

So I guess I'm a bit of a dabbler and never get really serious about anything but like to give most things a go.

  8. That is such good news. I've always loved this project. When the cry for help first went up I was just learning ASP and PHP and tried to see how I would implement it to see if I could be of help.

Quickly realised I was out of my depth and that there were so many more experienced people out there.

Looks like the funding will completely transform what you can do.

    Best of luck guys.

  9. My reaction? Have a good break.

We can all take a break when things get busy at home. If we don't go caching for weeks, don't read the forum and generally get on with life, who notices?

However there are some people in a more public position that would get 'spotted' and it's a typically honourable move to ensure that we are all aware of his decision.

Personally I think that a great 'hue and cry' of 'don't leave us' would only serve to increase Eckington's discomfort with the decision. It must have been a tough enough decision. So my conclusion has to be 'have a good break - hope you feel ready to come back soon.

  10. My heart sank when I saw the topic appear. I thought that some of the recent comments might have been the straw that broke the camel's back (again) and we would be looking for new reviewers.

We'll thank goodness we are not there (yet).

I had thought of starting off the reply along the lines of 'Following much media interest a number of geocachers have demanded a timetable for the hand over of power. Mr Lacto has stated that he expects to serve an almost full term but will ensure that there is adequate time for the new dictator to take over the reins...' but then thought better of it as it might get misunderstood.

So let me state again, the dual job of moderating a forum and reviewing (approving or whatever the current correct term is) caches must be immense. When I think how long it takes me to log my finds after a day out it staggers me that you can read the number of new cache descriptions you must receive each week, and keep an eye on the blatherings that happen here.

I can't think of a time when I have felt a thread has been incorrectly 'modded'.

I am amazed at how quickly caches are approved. Mine nay have been straightforward. I'm sure that others take a lot more looking into to check that they meet with a whole host of sometimes conflicting guidelines, advice, rules, laws and precedence. Some will eventually come down to a matter of judgement. The setter may be disappointed if their cache gets rejected. But you would have had good reason. And I'm afraid I would just have to say 'get over it - it's only hiding a plastic box'.

On the other hand, a few might slip through the net and get placed which perhaps shouldn't. The caching community on the whole know when they see a 'bad cache' and have mechanisms in place to rectify this.

All this has to be done voluntarily, in spare time, remotely without meeting the people and without actually visiting the sites involved. When I think of the endless meetings and visits I have to make at work to get the simplest job done....

So no complaints from me... you are doing an excellent job. I know I couldn't do it anywhere near as well, and I think the list of people that could is probably in single figures.

  11. Yep. Ipaq 5550 flipped out of the top of my rucksac as I picked it up. Landed on the bottom edge. The switches are on a little daughter board. The force sheared the to circuit boards cutting all the pins off.

Friend of mine had an XDA. It was raining and he was wearing a wide brimmed hat. Looked down to read the details and the water poured off the brim and onto the XDA, woosh, frizzle, crackle, dead.

My IPAQ was owned by work, but their insurance did not cover use off site! My home insurance didn't cover it as I didn't own it.

Luckily my boss dropped his to the same effect about a week later, so no more was said about it. But I can't have another so Had to buy one myself. It's in a full metal jacket now and treated with kid gloves.

  12. It does seem very cheap.

Looks like the 'one before current' version. If so it's the one I use and I'm happy with it.

As far as I remember the program was on the disks along with the map data. But I think I had to enter a serial number and possibly even connect to the internet to register it. Might be wrong there.

Are you up for a £20 gamble?

To be honest, I would have had real trouble with the maps on my PDA last week as I spent a few days caching in unknown territory and would have wasted ages trying to find the start of the right footpath each time.

Yes I could have used a paper map but I didn't want to buy maps for all the places I might go caching in.

  13. I've put a spoiler pics on a few of mine.

They are meant to be family friendly caches. I'd hate to be the parent who has persuaded the children to go treasure hunting - it'll be fun - and not find anything, particularly if they are newbies.

So a pciture is included to increase the chance of a find. Up to them if they look at it. But a spoiler pic is not required to find any of my caches.

  14. I'll pick up number 4) Etrex uses the co-ords exactly as listed on the website. As previous poster said, many people use GSAK click here for a link to get the cache co-ords and send it to the GPS. To do this you will also need to buy a cable as that is not usually supplied with the GPS. Also works best if you become a premium member of Geocaching so you can set up queries and have the results e-mailed to you automatically every week. You can then easily add these, 500 at a time, to GSAK.

One other word of warning when converting coordinates from one system to another. Different coordinate systems use different 'map datums' - different definitions of the zero lines of long and lat. Be careful with manual conversions you can end up a few hundred yards out. Using proper conversion tools on the net shouldn't be a problem.

If you are determined to use your PDA then GPSdash works pretty much like a low end Etrex.

I have used it in an 'emergency' on my PDA with a bluetooth receiver but I must say I don't like using my many hundred pound PDA out in the rain, forest etc.

Ask my friend who was using his XDA and a widebrimmed hat what happens when you look down and all the water pours off the brim into the XDA!.

Question 5) E-bay is most people's cheap buy. Watch out for possible VAT and import duty is buying from USA. Also if buying one of the high end mappng versions you need to be sure which CD etc you will get with it.

I bought my stuff from global positioning systems and have been happy with their service.
