  1. Many thanks. I sort of guessed that, but in these times I thought it would be helpful to all if an 'unfamiliar' name enters the discussion. I sincerely wish you all the best in encouraging a suitable replacement to step up to the mark, or better still, finding a way to make it possible for the dynamic duo to reconsider.
  2. You might want to rephrase that a little Hydee I am only reluctant because I would rather not replace them. Sorry to ask, but can we know who Hydee is? not real name and number, but this looks to come from someone in 'authority' and I for one have only just discovered who 'Jeremy' is and have no idea who's who in the upper echelcons.
  3. I must start by adding my unqualified thanks for everything you have done. I really don't know how you found the time and patience. As others have said I'm not at all surprised, but extremely saddened, at your decisions and wish that there was some way to urge you to reconsider. However, in my experience, the decision to resign is harder to take than the decision to volunteer, so I know it would take a massive effort to get this to to happen. SO all I really hope for is that you will continue to enjoy your new-found freedom and get out on the find. You are the only mods that I have experienced in geocaching, but I have been involved in electronic communities for 15 years including tutoring people to moderate forums and moderating them myself. Without doubt you are a model of how the job should be done. I have no idea how things will progress. It will be a hard act to follow. I have to echo comments here. We must continue. We have fun in our chosen sport/game whatever, and should not be prevented from continuing to do so. The forums are only a small part of the experience, and as other s have pointed out, there are alternatives available if we need them. But to fragment the sport and have caches listed at a number of locations strikes me as crazy. My preferred option is that we stick together, continue doing things our way and prove that we can sort this out. Somehow - re-reading this before I send it, this seems very poorly expressed. I can't think of a better way of expressing it, so I hope you all know what I am trying to say. As someone else almost said, 'So long and thanks for all the caches'. However that all sounds so final, and I only mean it to refer to one area of your persona. May your caching life flourish to new heights.
  4. Quite fun watching the anglers trying to keep their umbrellas and hides on the ground.
  5. Depends on dates. Also, most of the camping gear has now reached the end of it's life or gone on permanent loan. Kinda grown out of that and moved towards B&B, oh no... old age again. But if dates work out we could still be in the area but working from a B&B. But thinking about it, friends of ours, who also cache, have just bought a trailer tent!
  6. I would have liked to join you, but I've now got to work Friday evenings.
  7. For some strange reason we have become partial to penguin biscuits as a cache treat lately. Must be getting old, or is it just the cold weather, but a cup of tea is more appealing than a pint. But then again in October we were in the Brecons and finished avery day with an ice cream from the Llanfaes Ice Cream parlour. They have 50 flavours, all home made in the adjoining dairy. Does that strengthen the call for a cache weekend in Brecon?
  8. I know that you know there is a cache near you that has a container along these lines! That 's the first time that a find has made me laugh out loud. Don't give the game away by revealing too much information.
  9. This is getting tedious. The thread was clearly (well in my opinion) intended to be inflammatory, and was certainly in danger of heading that way. I could see no useful purpose for it. The final sentence of the first post makes it clear that it was not just a technical discussion on the possible effects of the predicted rockfall. This effect had been discussed to a conclusion in other threads any way. Lactodorum closed the thread, quite rightly in my opinion, but did so in a totally different manner. He issued a friendly warning. He allowed it due time and in fact a number of posters withdrew their posts. The thread was going nowhere and quite rightly closed it. I can see a marked difference and I really hope you can.
  10. I think school half term will coincide with bank holiday on 30th May. Kinda interested but redundancy looks like it will be about then, so can't commit to anything till I know what's going on.
  11. How inappropriate - given the theme of the cache. But thankfully local. I can feel an outing this weekend.
  12. Thanks all. I tried to find out about these a few years ago in an aviation group, but did not get anywhere. This group sorted it in minutes. Thread closing.... now I just have to think of a way to use these in a cache series.
  13. Not near and airstrip I'm afraid, if only they were The gas/water theory is a runner for some, the one in the picture has a gas warning sign at its base. But as I said there are quite few round here. I can't find a similar sign near others, and they don't form a logical line. However, I guess there may be a number of gas and water mains and each would have its own markers. Ta for that.
  14. Try this link to their profile Crincklybits profile I am probably a bit far away, but if no-one else can help I'll offer.
  15. I was out searching for new cache locations today and came across a number of these. They are about 10 feet high and look like they are meant to be visible from the sky. I tried mapping them but can't see a sensible pattern. I thought about using them as a cache theme but need to know what they are first!
  16. Not sure if they have found their way to this forum yet. Have you also sent them an e-mail via their profile? I know they requested a shepherd, but were they expecting a German one?
  17. Talking of asteroids heading our way, I take it you guys seen this recent story. To keep up with latest predictions look at the NEAR web page. Looks like the risk is lowering again.
  18. Radio 5 (live) picked up on that and ran an article on that at about 7.30 this morning. No new info as far as readers of this thread are concerned, but intersting to note that they considered this one to be the major predictable event of this nature. BTW who is the Eastern Sea Broad?
  19. I must admit I kept having those thoughts. I'm not obsessed... I could give up if I wanted to ... I just don't want to.
  20. Not so much 'targets' (I work in education and I have had enough of settings targets) but good intentions. (1)Place one cache each month (well at least one every 2 months) (2) Find at least one cache a month. (It's hard to find more than one weekend a month to get out for the next few months and if I have to dedicate time to resolution 1 ....) (3) Meet more cachers... both in the wild and at meets. When I started this I saw it as a bit of a solitary activity. Not a negative as we always like to walk where there are few people around. But it always felt a bit odd knowing that there were thousands of others involved and we never saw them. Having attended a few meets and bumped into a few people it has always been a pleasure. So here's hoping for a few more. (4) Break my addiction to the forum.... repeat after me... you do not have to contribute to every thread... speaking to the family is allowed... (5) Contribute something to the magazine and the geohikes website. Happy new year one and all.
  21. I recently met some of the cachers in the Hert/Beds area. Clearly a group of people that get on well. I have been attempting some of their caches, great ones they are too... and some are devious. I noticed on the logs that they sometimes phone each other... sometimes the cache owner and sometimes aprevious finder... for a clue. Two thoughts come to mind. 1) Is this sort of 'cheating'. If you don't happen to know other cachers and their phone numbers you are at a disadvantage. ( Not cheating in the "this should be outlawed" sense, more "wouldn't you feel that you had cheated yourself") 2) More seriously... in one case I can't imagine what help they could have given over a phone. It was in a dense copse, 200 ft from the path. Unusual species of tree but there must have been 20-30 of them... so look in the roots of the ****** tree wouldn't do it. SO I have this mental image of one party trying to describe a particular tree to another ... no not the one with the sticky-up branches... the one with two branches going up and one hanging down a bit. I can see it would work for some caches. Have you ever had to phone a friend from the cache location?
  22. Great way to start the new year! Glad to hear that there was a successful outcome after the support from the forum. Group hug everybody
  23. Sounds a bit like that dreadful Desiderata which people had on their walls when I was at college. I always preferred the National Lampoon version . Couldn't get the National Lampoon link to work. Couldn't see anything new in the Cacher's Code. Just a concise collection of current practice.
  24. Yes, but not too soon, recover from Christmas and all that.
  25. According to the list, last seen in the hands of Pengy&Tigger
