  1. Great night, thank Richard/Paul. Now I know the significance of Jumbo Village, but I'll leave that to you to explain. True to their word, House of Boo read from Bunty, Miss Duracell Bunny proved she is a real person, our friendly approver drank some non-virtual pints. TBs were swapped. Oh, and someone left a rucksac behind... check the log for the event to find out who has it, perhaps we need to put a TB tag on it.
  2. Just been looking at server side image re-sizing. It's not too difficult in PHP. Have a look at this. Any body happen to know the max number of files per directory in Linux?
  3. The one thing that's for certain, the whole diary will be shorter than the average time we spend once we get to the location rooting around trying to find it. So will it be cuts to make it look like it only takes a few seconds to find or are they going to speed it up like Benny Hill? (Mental image of SP scuttling around on fast forward?)
  4. Looked at the running order on the website for next weeks show. John Craven goes to Epping Forest. (very near me... loads of good caches there). And Michaela discovers the new extreme sport of ....... river bugging..... and gets very wet. For a moment I thought she was going to discover the extreme sport of .....geocaching..... but no such luck. They don't say what the video diary is going to be about until pretty much the last minute.
  5. I also saw a sign saying 'anti-drug' lighting installed. Do certain substances flouresce? (Oh my, how niaive am I?) Mind you, it could also explain how certain celebs have such healthy sun tans.
  6. Check out SP's post above about a date change. However, I will be going for both weeks. I remember the complete confusion over the broadcast date of a radio programme we were involved in. Ended up the only transmission of it was 3 o'clock in the morning on the World Service, which was officially a repeat of a programme that was never actually broadcast on radio 4. We never got asked about copyright, transmission rights etc, but a harmony line my wife improvised on the flute got used as the theme tune for a few weeks.
  7. Good point, yours maybe nice and small. Others are not so considerate. All these posts make it look like I am on a mission. Not really that much a burning issue for me as depending on where I am looking at the pages I can have as much as a 100 mb/s link all to myself. So in fact it is the speed with which my computer can render images to the screen that causes the bottleneck. It's just that I have spent a couple of lessons teaching 14 year olds html and web design. As you can imagine, they want to try every trick in the book. By the end of the lesson explaining why full resolution photos from a 2 megapixel camera do not make good backgrounds, not only based on file size but also on readibility of the overlying text, it does become a hot topic. Also in response to the crytpic souls crew post about sound, I had a similar experience with students trying to use complete tracks ripped from various other sites on their own. Not only increasing download time (plus not always appreciating their taste in music, probably my problem as I approach 45, I remember the days when people actually knew how to play an instrument, you know the type), but probable copyright issues. So again, after spending a day dealing with those issues, to get it again as soon as you get home just pricks my hypersensitivity. I'm still spoilt for choice for caches to find, so there has to be a factor that draws me to one rather than another. So it is often the quality of the cache description. I usually have the sound enabled as I'm usually listening to music. I don't have a choice of browser on many of the computers I use as they belong to work and there are restrictions on the software that can be loaded... but Firefox is my weapon of choice on any computer I own. Therefore if a naff tune begins to appear I often just skip on to the next page in the list. So it's not a blanket ban, just pointing out that when so many pages are crying out for your attention a minor factor might just decrease the chance of that one being chosen. But the question remains, why do so many people put sound/tunes on that have no relation to the cache in question and certainly don't add? There are some good examples of 'spooky' themed caches and the sound effects on the page work really well and hat's off to those that have got the balance right. Also, I'm just in work avoidance mode. So sitting here posting to the forum is far more interesting than the pile of preparation sitting next to me. Amazing how interesting a forum topic can get when compared to that.
  8. Only if you put the image on gc.com. True. I would guess that those that don't know enough html to insert a background image wouldn't have an alternative location, or at least know how to use it, and would be using the gc server.
  9. Totally unessesary. Can make the page a bit prettier, slows the download a bit, shows that author knows some basic HTML. Takes up more of GC.com's server space therefore increases the cost. Can't think of a reason why it would improve the cache description. However putting an image on the page does give an impression of where the cache is set so that you can decide if you want to go there for a day out.
  10. Don't you think it's a bit complicated for GCSE students? MarcB Too complicated for most, I agree, but the examiners are looking for something to really stretch the A* grades and looking for a well rounded solutin using web technologies. I didn't mean to belittle this project, in fact just the opposite. This is a complex project, but really interesting with a well specced goal. Too many of the gifted and talented students end up extending a fairly simple project and get a bit lost in a 'fluffy' ill-defined area where they can't evaluate whether they have met the goal any better than the first draft that they tried to extend. There are a few really able students out there that could pull this off.
  11. Book the upstairs, makes it easier for first timers to know they are meeting the right people. If it was downstairs you would have to approach random strangers and try code words like WAAS and Garmin to see how they responded.
  12. I will also be away. Skiing I will be asking my kids to tape it, so I asume I will be looking for an on-line version.
  13. Totally with you LG. Just about accept the background if image is not too big, sound if it is really necessary, but just a b**** tune? Speakers on mute, and as you said, drops it down the list of desirable caches for me.
  14. Click here for Garmin eTrex comparison chart.
  15. LOL Now that is a slightly 'in' joke.
  16. Oi! leave some of the local area for me!!! Hey, No arguments! SP happens to be MY area you know. It's even got my name on it... SP But SP is big you know! Ok maybe that came out slightly wrong Leave Simply Paul out of this.
  17. I get the feeling this would be a superb GCSE ICT project. There was a comment on the examiners annual report that they wanted to see more on-line database driven solutions!
  18. I think I prefer one of these Yeah but.... I want to use them skiing. Just the weight of 8 AA batteries let alone the set itself..
  19. Am I the only person with a summit? Got the lowest one that I could find with an electronic compass, more waypoints and routes than the 'yellow'. Didn't get it for the altimeter, never realy used it after the first week of novelty value.
  20. Yes, but it was out of stock not soon after I ordered yesterday. I was going to post it then but there seemed little point when it was out stock. However, it has come back into stock on three separate occasions this morning. Perhaps they have a real time stock system and keep adding more. It would be an incredible bargain if you can grab one. The link has now changed to read 'sorry no items in this category', whereas earlier today there was an item but out of stock each time I tried. Ah well, added a bit of excitement to the day.
  21. Hey. Great news. I don't think I can help with the video bit though. I was going to build a new computer this month to do this dort of thing but the funds are a bit low after Christmas. So, will there be an autograph signing session at the Geocachers meet in London?
  22. Crumbs! What hill/cache is that? Have a quick look at their recent cache finds and all will be revealed. Have you just invented a new game? Post a picture of an identifiable landscape and people have to name it!
