  1. I know it is 28, I am part of the accessible transport planning for 2012, so have done more than the average amount of reading on the subject of the Olympics for the past 18 months or so, and for obvious reasons have a general interest in the Olympics, but would not be any more able to name more than about a dozen off the top of my head, just like anyone else! The 'who am I to doubt' bit was meant as an acknowledgement of your greater knowledge in this area. I knew about your involvement and torch carrying etc so didn't doubt for a second that your answer was correct. I guess I was still trying to work out if the interpretation of events vs sports matched the question setter's intention We often have that problem at quiz nights. Sometimes the question setter has taken an answer from a book, but if you know a bit more about the subject there are other possible answers, and you have to work out what level the quiz is, if you see what I mean.
  2. My hunch would be one as there is only one Decathlon Gold medal?good point -hadn't thought of that... Men's Decathlon, Women's Decathlon = Two gold medals = Two events? Isn't it the heptathlon for women, or am I hopelessly out of date?
  3. This looks like fun... how long would it take us to name all the sports (no googling). If it were my quiz I'd only allow one sport per person to stop some clever whatsit naming all 28 (assuming Dorsetgal is correct, and who am I to doubt). I've chucked in swimming....next? But then again it's not my quiz.
  4. I've got the same figure and analogy somewhere, but I'm sure my fingernails grow more than 1 cm a year. But assume the 1 cm/year figure is about right. = 1 m in 100 years. The best I ever get is about 10m 'accuracy' on my GPS. So about 1000 years before plate drift moves a point outside the 'circle of uncertainty'.
  5. Does swimming = 1 sport? But there seems to be endless events, every time I have watched Olympics it seems to be swimming.
  6. Thanks for that... but there's no substitute for going into the shop and actually holding the thing. Not sure I like touch screen only with no real buttons for text input. Anybody got comments on that?
  7. There has been much talk on here about using mobile devices to hunt caches in the wild, with mobile internet and GPS built in. Recently all the managers at work were issued with T Mobile MDA touch plus devices. Great, as many of these are desk bound jobs and those of us that are out in the 'wild' (schools) all day, have to use our own... good to get that off my chest. Anyway, I had a play with the boss's one and thought this is good enough for me to look at one as an upgrade to my scratched and battered phone. I looked at the T Mobile website and they had 2 offers for this device, one had GPS SatNav CoPilot installed. Excellent, I thought. And it would work out cheaper than my current deal, mean that I don't have to carry phone, SatNav and PDA everywhere I go. (Would still use ETrex for serious tupperware hunt, but MDA might do for an improptu hunt when at a course) So I checked a few other websites in case there were any known problems and lo and behold.... It doesn't have a built in GPS There are a number of posts on user forums saying that customer services are telling people that it does. Some people seem to have been given a separate Bluetooth GPS to work with it. Others were given the impression that they assumed you had your own Bluetooth unit to hand. I contacted customer services who confirmed there is no GPS and gave me the phone number of Telenav to discuss this further. How can they sell a device with SatNav on but no GPS receiver? Still not sure what to get, but the O2 XDA looks like a front runner. Need to see how big this thing is.
  8. Is it just me or was the forum taking ages to refresh tonight? Always the way when I know an answer.
  9. Looks like we need help on this, or at least the topic needs help not to sink without trace.
  10. I use a Garmin etrex. I load my track into Memory Map (not free) or MapSource that came free with the GPS and that gives me time and date info. I can export the file as a text file and read it in notepad, or as a gpx file and also read that in notepad. In the gpx file look for a tag <time>. If the gpx file looks a mess in notepad, click on word wrap in the format menu.
  11. I'm just about in the same boat. Joined May 2004 and just hit 200. Averages out about 1 per week, so no real shame. For me it all goes in phases. Nothing for months then we go away somewhere new and bag loads.
  12. I have TT on my HP iPAQ PDA and it fails fairly often. Worst with the Compact Flash GPS plugged in directly and better with the bluetooth receiver but still crashes, usually when I get near the destination and don't know where I am. I played with a few other dedicated units but didn't really like the interfaces and the info given to the driver, so ended up getting a dedicated TT. Never had it crash on me. POI upload a doddle. I use GSAK and upload my entire database. No idea about uploading to other makes as I didn't own them.
  13. They don't sound far apart at all. So long as they are near a tube station I doubt that you would see much difference. PM or e-mail me the hotels and I can tell you for certain. BTW I'm a Londoner, can't believe no other Londoner has leapt in to help
  14. OK, I award full ding honour to Go Pack Go. 20:12 - Olympic year. Chanel No 5 was indeed the first advert
  15. Go Pack Go is closest so far... not using 24hr clock though... and not accurate enough.
  16. If only I could give points for trivia, the Archers question was going to be the bonus. Time guess further away than Go Pack Go's corrected entry.
  17. Closer, but I think we can get it to the exact minute (24hr clock - stuck in my mind when I heard it, not really a clue but you'll see why when all is revealed) Don't forget the bonus question. First advert on Channel 5?
  18. Full ding for the product, date correct but not the time.
  19. Wasn't it SR toothpaste (or something like that?) Close - worth half a ding, but we can do better than that.
  20. OK, nothing too taxing for a Friday Night What was the first advert on UK tv for? What time was it broadcast? (24hr clock please) Bonus question: What was the first advert on Channel 5 for?
  21. Sincere thanks for all you have done over the years. I take few months off to get on with other things. First thing I read when I get back is that it's gone horribly wrong. However, we have been here before, and while it's true to say that individuals can only take so much and quite rightly feel it's time to move on, UK cachers will rally round and find a way forward.
  22. They say that the burials will be no closer than 5m apart. Not sure my GPS is always that 'accurate' with the uncertainty value. Ans this site is meant to be under gum trees. Could be interesting.
  23. Watch out for the battery life. Used my Tom Tom as pedestrian and it lasted about an hour. I wouldn't like to get too far into an unknown area and be totally reliant on something with that short a battery life.
