  1. I haven't checked in on the ol' geocaching website in a while (bless me for I have sinned). I looked at the NASA website today to read about Wally Shirra, and happened to see this reference. I did a quick forum search, but I didn't see a reference to this. Anybody heard of this? edited to correct the link that I intended to list. Thanks Wes!
  2. If they are loaded as a geocache, once you find the coordinates, the icon on the GPS changes to "found", or an open treasure chest vs. a closed treasure chest. At least that's how it works on the 60cs.
  3. I'm a homebrewer. The above suggestions are good ones. I've got a bunch of saved empty White Labs Yeast vials that I've been thinking of using as cache containers.
  4. Garmin will be opening a store in downtown Chicago "in time for the holiday season". I can't find an exact date yet. The address will be at 669 N Michigan.
  5. Maybe you could start some kind of magazine about caching.
  6. This picture is posted on one of our caches. I love that picture!
  7. If you visit the Tour de France website, you can check out the daily routes via Google Earth. If you have the Geocache browser loaded too, you can also see the caches close to the route. Very cool!
  8. I've often thought about the reusable tennis ball containers. They are meant to keep tennis balls "fresh". You can find them at a sporting goods store in the raquets section. They probably aren't as large as you are looking for (3 tennis balls), but they do a very good job of storing tennis balls. I have used PVC containers and can assure you that they are a pain. They are not water tight and can be very frightening to the non-caching community.
  9. I get so creeped out by eye injuries, but I just had to look at that photo. I've had sympathetic eye watering since.
  10. When we started, we didn't use a PDA. We printed each cache page before we left. If we found a cache, we put the cache page in one folder, if we didn't find it, we put it in another folder for our next try. That way we weren't printing out multiple copies for multiple attempts. Silly, I know. I'm a paperwork kind of girl. We download all of that information to our PDA now.
  11. Actually, river kayakers and river rafters who are out on multi-day trips use ammo cans as makeshift toilets. And, everyone on a river trip tries to avoid sleeping at nite on the "latrine" boat, which contains one or more half-filled ammo cans, which usually kinda stink! eww! I'll stick to swag.
  12. You've opened, closed and perhaps owned ammo cans - even if you've never owned a gun.
  13. I'm up for some biking/caching! I've always had a bit of a thing for Sam Shepard too.
  14. Have a few kids find a hiding place and set a waypoint. They then give the GPS unit to another group to find the waypoint that was marked. I'd bet a group of 7 year old kids could do that for a while without getting bored.
  15. I'm planning to make one or two of these.
  16. We bought a few neodymium magnets at Michaels. The packaging calls them "neo-buttons". We found them in 1/2" and 3/8" sizes.
  17. I walked down the Easter bunny aisle at Target last night. There are lots of non food basket goodies. I picked up some silly putty, erasers and pencils.
  18. Bumping this thread as a result of the recent CBS segment
  19. One of my firewalls, "Spybot", disallows the photos. When I turn that one off and use Norton, I see the photos just fine. Maybe you can "dial down" the security on your firewall.
  20. I've got 6 neices of various ages that come caching with us. One thing we do is not focus 100% on finding the cache container. If there is a stream nearby, take the time to throw some rocks (as long as no fisherman are nearby!). If there is a playground near the parking lot, allow some time for that.
  21. I've been thinking of different ideas too. We'll be doing an event in conjunction with our park district for earth day. A coin is a fantastic idea. The best I've come up with so far is gift certificates with the coordinates on the back.
  22. I was involved in a presentation to some scouts. The event included putting plastic easter eggs at various waypoints. Each "team" picked an egg color. Each egg contained a puzzle piece. Each completed puzzle showed the coordinates to the final cache. Gift certificates were given to each team when they completed the series and returned to the starting point with the little congratulations slip in placed in the last egg. No swag trading, just an introduction to the gsa (game/sport/addiction). Our team was last - but it was a good idea nonetheless.
  23. I love this site! My neice sings this song every time we go caching. It would be disturbing if it weren't so goofy!
