  1. Does anyone have experience in using different GPSr's in tree cover? Which one do you think would provide the most continuous signal link?
  2. A friend of mine asked me to help him learn how to use his GPSr. He purchased a Garmin Etrex to map (track) old spanish trails. My wife and I have used a Garmin Deluxe V for the last several years and decided to help use his GPSr. Today while hiking we used both GPSr's to track a trail. When we got into the timber, we noticed the Deluxe V kept satellite signal while the Etrex lost the signal for most of the hike. Do you think there is something wrong with the Etrex, or do different Garmin models have better satellite reception?
  3. You know I have felt like I am the only one in my community who geocaches. The other day I had the fortune of seeking a cache some twenty or so miles off of the beaten path. Upon arriving at the cache, I saw a person with what looked like a GPS. Not seeing anyone with one of these gadgets I yelled down at him, "hey what are you doing down there!" He looked up and yelled back, "Geocaching!". I was so excited to see him. We sat and talked awhile about the sport, good cache containers, good trading items, travel bugs, and GPSr's. So....just one!
  4. Would like to make a suggestion and do not really know how to go about doing it. After a discussion with a USFS official about the benefits of Geocaching, I thought it might be a good idea for Geocaching.com to add some kind of record keeping device to determine how much trash is collected at each cache site or through CITO events. Currently our local forest service office does not allow geocaches because they claim they are; permanent structures on pubic property, trash, and create unnecessary trails in forested areas. My argument with them is that unlike other users of forest service property, Geocachers love the thrill of the search and find and hate finding trash. Therefore we typically pick up trash to and from the cache site. With some type of collection device, we as cachers could record how much trash is collected to use as data to promote the sport. What do you think?
  5. Don't bother with garage sales or ebay. You can purchase a new unit for just a few dollars more than a used one. On ebay I have witnessed several etrex's and deluxe V's selling for more than retail value! Search the net for comparative prices, then place your order. On a personal note, I would stick with a Garmin.
  6. This shirt is simply too good to pass on! I must buy this for a friend. He will absolutely love it!
  7. Appropriate or Inappropriate? Religious or non-religious? Matches or Toilet Paper? How many of you actually go to a cache to "see what is in it"? Admittedly I have only found twenty or so caches, and each one had the same junk in it! I don't pay any attention to the contents, the fun is in the find. Don't like matches in the cache, take them out and find something in your pocket to replace it with...like perhaps a pretty rock. Don't like the toilet paper, take it out and replace it with a McDonalds happy meal toy.
  8. The other day I was caching and accidently scratched the glass display on my GPS V. Two questions: 1. Does anyone know how to repair the scratch? 2. Has anyone found a great way to protect the glass display?
